  1. that pups looking nice mate, hows he doing? He's a great hunter but a little f****r. Thinks he's smarter than the rest of us. He'll find game anywhere, fur or feather, but unfortunately has a habit of cocking a deaf one when he wants to go find some and we are waiting for a slow rabbit to bolt. Too much nose for a lamp dog. He'll come with age though, he's made a promising start. yeh john said hes a good hunter, what will you use for lamping then mate Another dog This ones the ferreting/mooching dog
  2. When your out for a walk and you see a rabbit drop to ground take her over the holes and see what she does, encourage her to have a look. Don't praise them for marking a hole as this can encourage false marking. If she marks a set and it produces let her have a rag of the rabbit as a reward. You can maybe try getting a dead rabbit and pushing it down a hole out of reach of her and seeing if she scents it and tries to get down to it, might help it click, who knows. Apart from that just take her round lots of holes and scent and take her out so she sees them coming out and eventually. . . .. . c

Aye i think that land is 'job done'. Shame really as its so damn close. not a bad day then jai mate Up until the last hour it was demoralizing in the extreme, walking whole areas of holes where we usually get plenty of marks and finding nothing. Usually we c

  6. Aye but they are used to hunt a totally different kind of wolf. The eurasian wolf is not that big or that bad, more like the coyote. The canadian / timber wolf would just eat those dogs.
  7. My pup seems to have a thing for pheasants, but i'm having difficulty explaining that the birds on some permissions are fair game and the birds on some of the others very much not. He usually catches them up under or against hedges. Because i pretty much live on a shoot he gets a crack at some pretty much every day.
  8. just random i reckon, seen some get up and move off straight away, others squat some just kept on feeding go out often enough and we all see the different scenarios, personally iv never found it a hindrance running a white dog Thats the thing - never noticed the catch rate much different but have seen the odd dog that seemed to catch very well and often seemingly without being spotted till the last min, and they were dark. Best dogs i seen for that kind of stuff though have run out of the beam and then back in right at the end and in that situation color cant make a difference so i th
  9. As in - who would put 500 quid that a mark means a rabbit?
  10. A very demoralizing day, that ended in an hours god sport. Had we done it the other way round we would probably have happily doubled the bag. As for the rest of the estate i think our efforts and then a final wave of mixi has reduced the rabbit population to barely anything so that can now be left for the rest of the season, with no complaints (other than from us!). The important thing is that the young lad (13) enjoyed himself, and is shaping up into a decent ferreter
  11. At last someone with a little bit of common sense.. .. i would also not be using a scatter gun around horses/cottages/houses or other area's where livestock could be spooked by the noise, that is where the silenced PCP or springer comes in handy and i would prefarably keep it sub FAC as it would cause less damage to any farm buildings or machinery that happens to be accidently hit.. At the end of the day like i have mentioned from my experiences both scatter guns and air weapons have there pro's and con's...and Olim you little wank stain go play with your little baldie nob in your bedroom be
  12. Right i reckon white dogs can do equally as well as dark dogs on the lamp and agree with all of the above. However (and this is just an observation so dont shoot me) i have been out with a few very dark dogs, some fairly small and have noticed that ,amy times i have been thinking that the rabbit should clock and start to leg it any second and its sat there oblivious until the dog has been right on it and has often been snatched up before it can run, and i'm not talking about squatters, but rabbits sat feeding in the beam. Any thoughts, or is it just random?
  13. Currently go out with a young pure whippet and a middle aged 5/8 38/ grey/collie. The younger dog has a naturaly great nose and started marking at about 6 months, and is good with the ferrets etc, he's still a little eager around the holes but is steadying up nicely, he has also become silent but the last couple of trips i noticed he gives a single whine just before a rabbit bolts, whilst staring at the hole, and i have noticed him following the action under ground. My one complaint at the moment is that he is not very patient if not much is going on and has a habit of wandering off to find th
  14. Don't knock her - she could be what draws rabbits on the land that you hunt. I could do with a crazy old lady down my end who wanders my land scattering food to attract my quarry!
  15. O aye they can shift and have some mean stamina, they also tend to hang about in packs and know their ground very well. You got to remember that the wolf is the ancient ancestor of the dog and i dont think any dog has that kind of raw power and hunting ability.
  16. There is no such thing as a 'wolf' - there are lots of different types. You can run and kill eurasian wolves with dogs (seen it done) but when it comes to canadian / timber wolves then your dogs would die. They can and regularly do kill and eat huskies, hounds, etc etc etc
  17. Wildlife and countryside act 1981 (and as ammended in '85 , and 2000 crow act) it is an offence to release or allow to escape into the wild any species on schedule 9 [ exotics which are natralised such as grey squirel] or schedule 2 part 2 [vermin register which includes fox and a whole load of other stuff] .

  19. Found this "also it is not "perfectly legal" to release animals that are on the vermin register back into the wild, the enforcement agencies generally turn a blind eye to wildlife rescue centres doing this but in legal terms they are comiting an offence."
  20. First light to last light  If thats possible! But anytime, i get good results when i go for an evening walk every day (when i've not spent the day ferreting), often i'm only out 4 - 4.30 and manage a few.
