  1. I'm depressed as f**k, no ferreting yesterday, today or tomorrow because the dog has fecked himself :-( GRIM!
  2. go on then enlighten me Twas not meant as an insult mate. I don't buy into the idea that all lamping dogs are "point and slip dogs", it's just a nonsense that people use to try to put other down. So many are used daytime as well anyway. However, some coursing dogs, and i guess some lamping dogs (more so coursing) do spend their life pretty much, on a slip, until quarry is sighted, then let go, they run the quarry and either catch it or lose it and return. Now that's a skill in itself, but never for me, quite as impressive as watching a dog hunt up land and cover, following a line,
  3. 2 thoughts - Firstly there is a definite art in laying traps. Secondly, the trap is working when you are not there, it is a very very efficient means of pest control in certain situations.
  4. Stick the dogs in the house and wire the kennel door up to the mains. First p***y who tries to open it gets fried and the rest go home and cry to mammy,
  5. Never knew one of your dogs won the stock car racing mate, well done.
  6. On a good day, maybe 6/7. On most days somewhere around the 4 mark. . . . haha. Depends i suppose what the numbers are to each folk. I seen some folk 'train' their dogs and though, very good, got to be a 9, then other who have just blown them out the water. A lot i suppose is down to the dog. My excuse is that mine is an ignorant b*****d, so maybe i'm a 7 as a trainer, and he's a 4 as a learner.
  7. if youve to shout at your dog whilst out lamping would it not be better to keep him on the slip instead of scaring everything off in that field and maby the next ones ?? i do a lot of lamping by myself so if iv got a few rabbits in my hand and the lamp in the other and say a deer or something else is spotted by the dog what i dont want the dog to go for and he starts running then i knock the lamp off and give a quick shout and hes called off it might scare a few rabbits but id rather do that than him catch something hes not suppossed to atb I'm always surprised by that, i'd be there
  8. Interesting that, because in march, you gave us all a lecture on how untrained our dogs were, because they could not be called off quarry . . . . . and then proceeded to tell us how you trained your dogs to be off slip, and how you called them off a chase, with the magic word 'yak'. "Over the last two decades some of my mates have had, faster, more agile dogs that would run till their hearts burst and they were fine dogs .However i decide if a chase is viable and i make the choice, many a night i have avoided the slip against a long ear,if i`m after bunnies.IMO the secret to calling off a
  9. So you don't think the life of a good hill farm collie is hard or testing enough season after season being worked on livestock day in day out? aye it does test them, there stamina, recovery, feet and coat but not in a hunting environment. for me I want It tested in the trade I do and been put under pressure in that trade chasing down quarry. as at the end of the day I'm not having it to chase sheep around I've got it to hunt and there's a big difference in a herding brain to hunting brain. just my view. Not being funny but herding is just hunting without the actual killing. Plenty of

  11. what do you mean by that simon.not a dig btw genuinely interested.so these dogs we see on the tv one man and his dog,are they no good for everyday working? Good farm dog needs to think on it's own feet, bit more up and at em. Trial dog needs to follow precise instructions. Also a farm dog needs to work all day, a trial dog for a very short time. Obviously some farm dogs make trial dogs, but not often i think. Same with gun dogs.
  12. One of the biggest detriments to the standard of working collies (in general) was the invention and use of the quad bike. . . . . .

  14. All of the great injustices and crimes in the world. . . . and those three spend their days trying to catch people chasing a fox. . . . . . . .
  15. You should be in control of the dog on or off the slip. If you aren't it isnt trained properly. Lamp lighting quarry-go,lamp off, back to you. Simple. If the dog doesnt do that then its not a lamp dog,its a point and shoot coursing dog thats not trained to the lamp properly. SO because you are such a good dog trainer, when your dog is walking to heel and a rabbit (or other quarry) gets up a few feet away and legs it, your dog just ignores it unless you stick the lamp on it?
  16. Nice ferret. You're joking about the e.u bit yer?
  17. Thought as much, but heard a lot of folk on here recommending it to people . . . . . . and those people taking their advice. Bit worrying.
  18. R.E - the death penalty. If i trusted the judgement of the government and the "fairness" of our legal system i may not have a problem with it. As it stands, i have a MASSIVE problem with it.
  19. Skycat, what's your thoughts on the giving of Ibuprofen to dogs? Always thought it was a no no and better using Metacam or something similar.
  20. Good to hear Rob, as i said before, you learn to trust your animals, they know better than you. It's very easy to 'will' rabbits down there, and interpret vague interest as a half mark. Once you know how Tilly marks, you will be amazed how many very active looking warrens you walk by with no mark. Especially at this time of year. Sounds like you have got the makings of a good team. R.E Gorse, we usually just cut/beat a way into where the holes are, crawl under if we have to and get them netted. You can string a long net around, or if too big, cut pathways through to long net. I
