  1. Not really true, lots of lurchers have started from bitch collie, bull, saluki, deerhound etc etc etc and a greyhound sire, because the traits of the dam are required with more speed. Yes but are they any better for it? Having seen some of these crosses I stand by what I said and that a lot of them would be better dogs if they had a bit more greyhound in them. I have mates that are breeding little more than mongrals and think they are running dogs.
  2. The reason for cross breeding with a greyhound is to add traits to the greyhound not the collie, bull, or what ever else. Ie brain, feet, size, stamina. The greyhound is the ultimate running dog but sometimes needs a bit of fine tunning through cross breeding to suit the job.
  3. Do not try and insult my intelligence and say that ex track greyhounds make decent workers they will not have the wind that an average lurcher would have ...Ive seen fit greyhound saturated lurchers have nothing left to the point of dropping and imo they had done very little compared to the lurchers that were still fresh and had plenty left in the tank It's because there fast though, fast dogs always tire before slow dogs. I have seen greyhounds that have been allowed to roam on a farm where they were kept. Most days they would wonder off looking for hares/rabbits they could run as long as
  4. It has been banned now, law came in 1/10/10 banning the taking of any freshwater eels in UK waters.
  5. Have any Blue Fin been caught in the last 5 years off Ireland? Or are you setting up else where?
  6. Egg flys not that I enjoy fishing them but they do catch their fair share.
  7. It's now illegal to take an freshwater eels in the UK, if you where going to I would not set a trap as if anyone stumbles across it your lightly to get a very big fine.
  8. You do, I don't know any clubs that will line up a fight for an uncarded fighter, as you cannot be registerd with the ABA until you have your card. Like Bogger said though you may as well wait until Sept and get it done then.
  9. Avoid the stuff is sold under various names by different company's and a big pike will bite through it. Used some for zander and eel fishing stopped using it when after netting a good eel when to unhook and it snapped like cotton in my hand. Now use Kryston quick silver for eels and 49 strand for zander + pike.
  10. Give these a try yorkshiretackleexchange.com
  11. Done loads of rats with ferrets and never had one get badly bitten. Dogs seem to get bitten more than ferrets.
  12. A match on the River Nidd about 2 weeks ago was won with 2 chub 7lb 4oz & 6lb 11oz. Had a few big ones when deadbaiting with lamprey.
  13. Your right end of the day its all about making money like any other business, and that's what worry's me about this big fish fight. I personally think it will be a step backwards as more fish will be landed. How are they going to police weather the extra boxes of fish landed are bycatch or illegally caught. If cods at top prices and a boat has already caught it's quota I know what I would do if I were the skipper, go trawl for cod and say it was bycatch from trawling for sole.
  14. That's what worries me trawler skippers are all for it, which I think will leave the quota system wide open for abuse. In theory it's a good idea but what's going to stop boats trawling for cod when they have already caught there quota and saying it's bycatch?
  15. The trawler skippers are just two greedy. http://www.whitbyseaanglers.co.uk/whitby-boat-skippers-prosecuted-for-illegal-fishing
  16. Thats what it needs an increase in mesh size and a cut in days at sea. Shamus cod always fetches good prices, what else can they fish for thats going to fetch the same price as a haul of cod. Coalfish gets dumped all the time, 20 years ago coalfish was always dumped it's only due to the shortage of cod that theres now a market for it. If you have a boat that can carry lets say 150 boxes of fish back why are you going to take low value fish back coley fetches half the price of cod at best so that means twice the work. Lab-tastic your right but how do you catch a boat dumping out at sea? The ski
  17. No prices won't drop as consumer demand is for cod, if a boat still has cod to catch and first trawl gets a load of coalfish it will box these up. If it than starts catching cod the skipper will dump the coalfish to make room for the cod. Yes sole is worth more per kg but to a skipper its easier to cover costs / make money fishing for cod. You need a lot of sole to fill a fish box. http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/jan/13/fish-fight-fearnley-whittingstall-britain
  18. Loads of pin whiting at the start of winter, but not so many now. Good cod winter though compared to last year.
  19. Yes that's it, but the modern UK boats and pair trawling are also doing plenty of damage. Trouble with the european boat's was they took undersize fish, fish that UK boats have to dump what happens to them under the fish fight banner?
  20. Any one who thinks theres loads of cod has never boat fished in the 's then there was loads of cod. Those skippers who said it was the most cod they had seen for thirty years are talking bull. Any east coast charter skipper will tell you theres nothing like the cod of the 70's and 's.
  21. Because who is going to bother fishing for sole and other fish when you can just target cod which are worth more money.
  22. It's ok signing up but what is he pushing for? An end to dumping will just put the cod under more pressure.
  23. Never fished them but Hampshire Avon and the Kennet have done some big pike over the years.
