Having had an eye on the weather all week I was relieved when Saturday morning finally came and it was above freezing (just) and the snow hadn't arrived as threatened. I'd hastely thrown a plan to travel down to Dorset for the day - a bit of smoke and mirrors was required as i'd told the mrs i was plucking turkeys then shopping for her X-mas present so timing and conditions were critical I met up with my mate Foxdropper at 4am at another permission to try and give him a crack at bagging his 100th fox of the year. It was cold (for a Southerner) and crispy underfoot with frost and whilst there

Not that I don't want to stick my neck out but i'm a bit on the fence. In all honesty i'd follow Foxdroppers philosophy although I appreciate a poll is more black and white. Generally Before Christmas - followers first unless its open ground and the chances of the followers pausing safe and within range (with the doe on the floor) are favourable. After Chrismas if the followers seem strong enough I'd probably look to take the Doe first with the intention of picking up the followers. Obviously if there is a weak looking young one, especially out of a pair, they'd be my priority.

Brace and a half this morning .

Good going again matey. Glad you've got your phone back martin - i'll give you a bell later mate. Hope you're getting better. -
Cheers mate - it's a remi 700 varmint but the barrel has been cut down to take a couple of extra pounds off the weight. Still makes you feel it after a while though. He wasn't the heaviest fox but he did have a big old head on him - as for skinning him it was discussed at the time but I get enough grief off the wife for having antlers about the place let alone a fox skin with that oh-so-fresh aroma! Its more a leggy whippet to be honest martin - I've lent her to a mate in Scotland where she's taking red stags single handed as practise before I take her to Canada after Bull Moose.

Popped out yesterday evening with FD on a bit of a last minute look out for Charlie. At a glance it was one of theose nights you'd be a bit cynical about being bright and clear with next to no wind and fog patches that you knew would be lingering in all the best spots. It got better when we were told by the owner of the bit we planned to lamp that the next farm overs son had been over the ground the night before with some success. Its didn't take long for us to come to the conclusion that the ground had a fair bit of attention as every rabbit scarpered without even pausing at the hedgerow.

220 swift or .223 remi how do they compair for fox?
Yokel Matt replied to patdahat's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
No experience with a .220 swift, or any other of those mentioned aside from the .223. All I can say is its a very sweet round to shoot and pretty flat to most reasonable distances. I find the 40gr more that enough for fox's. All the best. -
A nice wee bag there Ian - a poor nights work by your usual standards but a red letter day for us down south! Pull your tongue out of Ians arsehole John - on 200% Zoom you can easily make out spots of blood on the noses of some of those rabbits not to mention the poor attempt at symmetry...
-
ok then John - fair enough. How about you stick you head above the parapet at get a couple of threads up... setting an example whislt contributing to the site instead of just pulling down other peoples threads with the benefit of your opinion. I dont' need to see gore so you can stage the photo's how you like.

With all due respect to Ian and the team for providing and facilitating such an excellent site I really have to say that I'm finding the whole 'posting a topic issue' turning into an absolute ball-ache. IMO the whole site is being driven into the ground by high-and-bloody mighty opinions derived from the experts pulling apart every minute detail of a post and how they'd do it better. No wonder people who actually get out there and do it can hardly be bothered posting accounts of their trips out as they feel bound to justify everything afterwards - thats why the site is filling up with boring r

I think the whole point of them is to be able to take abuse to be honest - they also have the added bonus on not wharping if moisture penetrates which is a risk with wood stocks of any type.

I'm thinking of the McMillan style stock blank which you can get the action bedded into. I know my Remi 700 slots into Hogue stocks with little (if any) gunsmithing required but the remi is a common rifle.

More Foxing... with some XXXXX on the side....
Yokel Matt replied to Yokel Matt's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Cheers all - Less grief when it comes for rabbits it would seem I asked the farmer about the deer. He's seen a pair around but his beef still has the run of the place and I didn't see any They'll be off and in the sheds soon hopefully so they'll be back Saw plenty of rabbits about on the lamp which had a tendancy to squat... speak later. -
Ouch! Rather the rifle stock than breaking your leg though hey. Is there an epoxy drop-in available for your rifle model? Wouldn't look as nice but would be less than a new set up.

Good one Dave - dew soaked chest and curious posture, good pic.

Had a phone call from a Farmer mate today who was about to 'retire' a number of his laying flock. The birds arn't that old, 15 months or so, but have done their bit and are now considered over the hill. I mentioned to him that i'd like a few to add to my small flock of layers and this was the call to come and pick some. Its been nice and sunny here today so I popped the rimfire and .223 in the car for a quick look about whilst I was there. Managed 5 xxxxxx before it got dark and the poultry put themselves to bed. I paunched them out in a specific part of a field I planned of sweeping later

Caught this fella today on a run outside our hen house. Although I've had quite a few from the rat magnet combination of a chicken run next to the compost heap it's the largest i've had. He's a whicker over 18" (or would be if I was man enough to straighten it out properly instead of mincing around with a stick) - how does this stack up in the scheme of things?

Fox Thumping with Martin and Foxdropper
Yokel Matt replied to Yokel Matt's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
You have the luck of the Irish with getting ground Martin - nice one. Mind you whatever is antagonising those ducks needs sorting pronto. Thanks again buddy. -
Popped down to Martins yesterday to meet up with him and Foxdropper and get schooled in the art of calling and, hopefully shooting some fox's. It was windy and dark being quite overcast although the cloud cover was moving quickly and occasionally revealed the full moon. We were just loading up when the strangest noise errupted from nearby that sounded like a generator with broken bearings - turned out to be some large rearing arks that were full of ducks and somethng was really pulling their chain - they were going nuts Dispite their obvious discomfort it was taken as a good omen that Cha

More than welcome mate - made you sing for your supper though with a bit of tree work earlier in the year though I was surpised with the size as well - when you're used to Roe trying to get a sika up on a hook makes you wish you ate more spinich. I'll weigh him tomorrow now i've found a pully as once I'd lifted up to the roof beam (off the top plate of a step ladder) I was buggered if I was taking him down again. A few more pics from the day.. The view from my seat as the dawn mist cleared: The view from some of the 'grip adjustment' breaks carrying the spiker back to
