One of the most informative and balanced replies i've ever seen on the forum - very refreshing, thanks
-
thanks for that they were defo red but were the hell they came from i dont know, they must of escaped from some were , any way it was a honor to see them Get in mate! Might be worth a closer look - may as well take the rifle with you
-
I was a sucker for the marketing mate - can't sniff at your bargain though. Heard they're the nuts.. about time you got down the orchard with your NV mate to stretch its legs

Personally i think a .243 would be a more suitable dual purpose cartridge for both species - you mentioned this in your last topic i believe. Would also give you some options on the bigger species. If for some reason range is the be all and end all of your decision making process this will give you more energy at the end range side of things and more chance of punching out a wound channel with an exit to blead the beast out / give you something to follow.

FAO FOXDROPPER - MY BAIT STATION
Yokel Matt replied to FOXHUNTER's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
You moved to Australia mate? -
Urgh - doesn't look too worse for wear though does he. Amazing how they cope with such debilitating injuries.

Not to be a cock or anything but horns arn't shed but held for life growing each year. 'Antlers' are cast each year and re-grown, in terms of a red there's a few years difference between a young spiker and a 12 point royal. You'll see spikers & staggies in their first year with development primarily dependant on the food resources available. Never shot a red mate - if you've got some on your ground you're a lucky man and good luck to you.

I've got a wildcat whisper on my rimmy mate - again not sure its quieter than a SAK. Strippable & reflex in style but at £100 more than a SAK not sure its worth it.

Centerfire is pretty different ballgame mate. Of course similar safety applies but the rules change somewhat as range is no longer the restriction, YOU are. Not saying bad shots don't happen but applying a bit of fieldcraft and keeping shots to less than 200 meters (preferably less than 100 / 150) should do you and the animal a favour. You'd probably enjoy it more as well.

Haven't posted for a while but had to get something up about a trip down to Martin's last week. Arrived at Martins around 5pm and Foxdropper arrived shortly afterwards as we both needed to check zero on the rifles beforehand. Went to the now infamous market garden after 5 shots each and a bit of a tweak were confident that the gear was on the button so set off to another patch to wait up for a buck. Moments away from the destination we get a call from the market garden farmer to say he's just found a pair of bin's and a harris bipod on the flood by his barn - hands up for the wanker please ..

Well done Martin - another good head there mate. The Market Garden delivers again.

firearms officers home visit questions
Yokel Matt replied to marky2222's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Do you have any experience with either of the two calibers you've put down for? -
Biggest I had was just shy of 19 inches long. Lucky the wife didn't see it or she'd never got near our chicken shed again.
-
Could have sold that as a meal in itself Martin - nicely presented with a few herbs an oriental would have snapped it up.

So are you saying the 10/22 isn't accurate after 50'yards?? 10 yards further than an air rifle????? That's just bollox Maybe I need to explain this to the dozens of head shot 90 yrds + rabbits I've shot over the years. At the end of the day buy whatever rim fire you choose but let's have it right eh FFS??? Lordy Lordy! I understand your frustration mate - this bloody topic has done the rounds more times than '.22 or .17HMR'...

Didn't really read the post did you mate, they were taken on several bits of ground over the course of a long weekend. A couple of them were, admittedly, good bucks but when you've got ground to cover and cull targets to reach why not make a get on with it. Leave things too long and the cover will get up and you'll struggle to find the buggers. Do much stalking yourself?

Maybe i'm getting soft... but has anyone else notice the truely staggering amount of mozzies, midges and biting flies (ie horse flies and their darker relatives) this season. I've been out a few times where the deer are known to be on the ground, the weather conditions are just right and everything simply screams buttolo-call but the amouint of fauna in the air makes you wish you were wearing a realtree bee-keeper suit. Its left me scratching my head... and i'm not talking about all the bites and lumps. Any possibility that rutting is taking place mainly at night when the little buggers are le

Pah - these trophy hunters :cray:Ohh-er mate - he's nice. Hope there's space on your wall for another medal...

A while ago,possible gold
Yokel Matt replied to Squirrel_Basher's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
He looks as good in the flesh as he does boiled mate - he's a gold all the way and by no small margin either. I'm going to stick my neck out and say he's going to score 140+.... almost platinum ... bet you're glad we didn't shoot him back in May arn't you. What a cracker -
You seriously couldn't make this up..............
Yokel Matt replied to martin's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
you're due for some luck martin - not that much luck though! -
Monday looked to be a nice break in the weather and Martin was keen for such an opportunity to be put to good use, kindly inviting Foxdropper and myself down to look for a buck. The weather was close and clammy and its was pouring off us as soon as we got out the truck, Martin was looking to fill the chiller up with rabbits so he was stalking the lower part of the valley with the .22. FD and I were headed further up the lush hay fields interspersed with copses to wait up for a buck. I hadn't been here before and FD directed me to a field which looked to be recovering for a second cutting a

Wanted Shmidt and Bender or Swarovski Scope

PM Sent Noisey -
Ahh.. a man of discerning taste. I have a Sauer 202 in 6.5x55 - very smooth action & lovely balance. I did, however, find that the trigger break was set pretty damn hard for my liking and only (ie yesterday) bothered to look up how to adjust it. Mine has a composite stock so its more the 202 'roughneck' but still a smooth piece of kit. In all honesty I haven't shot terribly well with it recently but I think thats more because i'm so in love with the Zeiss and trigger combo on my .223 that i've lost the feel of my 6.5... obviously need some more schmoosing time with the old girl

heads up if your looking for gunsmith work.
Yokel Matt replied to jamie g's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Ouch! Back to the drawing board then... minus a good few months pissing about. Lucky you had someone reliable to assure you it wasn't just your 'bullet / powder combo' - what a prick -
Polecat / Stoney Point sticks are good, 3 stage telescopic for standing, kneeling or sitting. They're a bit expensive next to the other options though. If you're in the market i've a spare pair knocking around somewhere that I was going to put up in the sale section. I though i'd lost my other set but then found them again! PM me if your interested. Matt
