  1. Is a .22 hornet much better? YES YES AND YES
  2. Good luck mate, a twig or tape could do it, good news on mod and crown(take it off every time you shoot from now on) also crappy mounts wont help, I hope its sorted for you pal, but dont send your scope back until you try another on the rifle to see if it shoots straight with another on board, keep us posted
  3. Go for a standard and put a Boyds stock on it pal, mine will shoot tiny cloverleaf groups with home loads and as Danw says half inch with factory all day long.
  4. Bargain, somebody snap this up if it fits your rifle, they are superb moderators
  5. Well if tape is stopping the barrel float that would do it but, it would take quite a build up of tape to stop the barrel floating(this assumes of course that your model of rifle DOES have a free floating barrel and is not pressure bed) when I asked about your cleaning regime, I was trying to find out if you cleaned it before every session, as this can affect zero to a good extent on some rifles, I suggest you stick to your current regime, it sounds about right, I would like to think your gunsmith has checked the crown? But it does not take much damage on the crown to turn the rifle into a sho
  6. Ok then if your ground is cleared for .243 or above, you should have no problem being granted a .243, I suggest you get onto your stalking friend and ask him for a letter stating you have stalked with him and you are safe/competent, this will go a long way trust me, then I would speak to the feo (its good that he is a shooting man) and ask him about a .243 as you wish to shoot fox but not be restricted to the species of deer you can shoot as for reloading, if your pal has a press etc, then all you will need to buy are a set of dies, powder, bullets, primers, and have some once fired cases at
  7. Dont ever let anyone zero your rifle for you mate, nobody can zero properly for you, make sure you have a good rest, Ie bipod up front, bag or improvised bag at the rear, start at 50 yards to get you on target, use a cross of insulation tape on your target, and settle your crosshairs on the cross, move back to a hundred and zero an inch high, fire five shot groups allowing the barrel to cool with the bolt open between shots, should take you about half an hour to get her spot on, the .222 is so inherently accurate, it will be a doddle.
  8. Well I think he is talking crap mate, scopes how ever well built DO fail, why would the bullet be clipping the mod now if it did not before? Answer, shoot a group without the moderator, why would tape on your stock affect the barrel free floating? No I still think your problem is the scope, as I said before, try a different scope, then you will know, he probably cant be arsed returning it to the manufacturers for you if it is faulty, if the bullet was clipping the moderator, due to it coming loose, you would see copper from the bullet where it had touched, not a black mark, we have not touched
  9. Top advice on the chokes mate, I use nothing but imp cylinder in my m1 and let me tell you I have pulled duck after duck and goose after goose down at 50 yards plus, as James Wentworth Day said, choke is an invention of the devil.
  10. Inch high @ 100 yards mate, you will be about on target @200 and as a rough calculation, around ten inches low @ 300 yards, congratulations on the .222 mate, one of the most accurate sweet shooting calibres ever created
  11. That was a cheap gun mate, the cammo ones fetch a bit less than the black ones, due to them being a bit more specialized wildfowling guns, a new m2 is around 1200 quid, Benelli also do wood stocked autos as well, if that is your thing, personally in an auto I prefer synthetic stocks, but am totally in agreement with you about wood stocks on a traditional gun, whatever you get mate, buy something decent quality THAT FITS YOU, then if for any reson you decide to swap it in or sell it, you will not lose money, and may even get a tad more than you paid for it if you get a good deal.
  12. Ok do you have any evidence of your previous stalking experience? If not can you acquire it, because just telling them you have been wont wash, obviously I dont know your feo, as we know they are all different, the way I see it you have two choices really, you are in the fortunate position of having spoken to your man about acquiring a .223 for shooting foxes and you have land cleared, so far so good, now (and I am surmising) you dont have land that either holds, or you have authority to shoot Muntjac? Now you MIGHT get lucky and have aolq added, (perhaps a call to your feo might be in order)
  13. If you want a semi auto mate, buy a Benelli, m2 or good secondhand m1, the best semi auto shotguns in the world, bar none, they work on inertia, so no gas piston to worry about, and they come with spacers to adjust length, cast etc, it will last you a lifetime, and unless you want to spend 6 grand on a days shooting on a posh estate, take the damn thing anywhere, I do with mine
  14. having an fac/sgc does not mean you will pass an advanced disclosure cert that means you can work with kids No it does not, however if you have a conviction for being a fuc*ing nonce it is highly unlikely you will be granted an sgc or fac is it not? So I would be pretty confident, in the fact that an fac holder probably was not a kiddy fiddler, of course this is not inffalible, but neither is an enhanced crb disclosure either.
  15. Yes but unless I have severely misunderstood your post, you DONT have an open ticket for a .223 correct? so lets say you have an open ticket for .22 or .17 hmr you wont automatically be granted it on a .223, more than likely they will put you on closed ticket with it, aolq is being applied in more areas, but can you not check with someone in your area, to see if they have the condition? If not then I would apply for the .223 for fox, again I am making the assumption that you will be buying paid stalking for the Muntjac? If so then book a stalk before you put in your variation, that way they wi
  16. That deranged cu*t has done more to harm this country than Thatcher ever did, with his warmongering and his open door immigration policy I have only one answer to him.
  17. But that wont tell you if the scopes fuc*ed see if, after you have wasted time and perhaps money on having it cleaned, if he will lend you a scope to try, if your rifle groups fine with a new scope, you know the problem, if not, then you can start the process of elimination, but the scope should be the first (and easiest option) thing to suspect, good luck and let us know how you get on.
  18. Thank fu*k somebody has said that, you can buy a Purdey if it does not fit you will not shoot well with it, but buy a £50 Baikal that does fit and you will outshoot the Purdey, the above advice is sound, go and try several guns, get some good advice from a proper gunsmith not just a salesman who cares only about his sales targets, not your gunfit, and if you find a bargain that you really like, but it does not fit, have the damn thing fitted to you, it is not expensive, and can often be negotiated into the deal, DO NOT BE AFRAID TO HAGGLE.
  19. Yes you can thank the BDS for that wonderful piece of legislation.
  20. The first thing to do is beg steal or borrow another scope, and try your rifle with that, if its ok you know its the scope if not you can begin the process of eliminating faults, mounts, moderator, crown, bedding, etc etc, good luck.
  21. Quite agree, what possible bearing could it have on your suitability (or your partners) to become a childminder, it is about as relevant as telling them you have two sugars in your tea.
  22. Ah .222 the calibre the gods would choose
  23. Try getting fox on a ticket for ANY rimfire in SYorks, no chance, I would not wish to test the water by claiming I shot one under my "vermin" condition, I agree foxes are vermin, but still would let somebody else be the test case, so I will stick to the .243 for charlie, they dont seem to get up for some reason
  24. Well Artemis must have a bristling treasure chest then, the number of "offerings" you have made over the years
  25. Nah. Don't have an FAC. Besides in my county for fox, you have to have CF, usually .223 min, even on 1st grant. For the numbers of rabbits I shoot, I'd probably use a .223 as an all round gun. If numbers became an issue, then yep I'd take a HMR as a 2nd gun over a .22 any day, unless I was shooting near housing at night. A few cracked cases and for some it becomes the devils spawn. Personally I don't see it. The superior range make the HMR a very nice little tool for small pest control. Every calibre has an achilles heal and .22 is far from perfect - low power, limited range and a tend
