Correct me if I am wrong but, Aynsley was a stonemason, Dobson was a bobbin maker, Breary was a school teacher, Buck drove a milk wagon. Not every terrier man has to farm the land, just have respect for terrier, quarry and land hunted. Cut the guy some slack, He is trying to do some good.

Well datailed write up on patterdales?
p3d replied to ben1191's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
I have a Border bitch which shows the signs of a top knot Bosun11. When you strip the coat you can feel the linty hair on the top of the head. Could the top knot have come from the original dogs, before Bedlington, Dandie, Border, Lakeland and Fell were split up. So that any evidence of a top knot might be a throw back to the first terriers? I don't know enough about Cowens dogs, but believe I saw a Tyson terrier years back imported into Ireland. It looked like a Black and Tan Lakeland, solid type with a hard coat. ATB. -
I was involved in a small working terrier club 25 years ago in Cork Ireland. Small worked well because every member was vouched for. Only people who were interested in real terrier work were involved. Not everyone who has a terrier pup can join. 2 years before you find out they are ANTI. JMO but If you are going to start a working terrier federation. You need to put in protections for these small clubs, from the attacks from head cases like Phillpot and his kind. i.e. No members names lists. Just club names. The clubs pay contributions to the Federation to fund any media campaigns. T

Just curious, but where did you see that Bowman was a terrierman. (Good or Bad)

Would agree with the above, Plummer was a talented writer, but nearly all of the book is false or misleading. He patched together tales and stories to suit an audience that were hungry for information. IMO The history of the Patterdale is so recent (early 60's) that there is no history. In Eddie Poole's own words, "This Patterdale terrier breed they talk about is a load of boll@cks!!" (Eddie lived in Patterdale all of his life, as did his father and grandfather before him.) Gould and Nuttal must take most of the credit for the dog in front of you. Bred a black Staffordshire bull te

Good and Bad. Good part was I got back in the field, digging with a good guy who has an excellent line of white dogs. Have a pup coming in a couple of months from this line. Bad part was both Border pups I brought on did not make the grade. Its a hard game, gave the dog plenty of chances, dug one with him and thought he might make a handy dog. But he lacked the drive to make it as a reliable digging dog. Upward and onward for the coming seasons. ATB

Excellent tool, probing for a tube, tying out, clearing back cover, an all purpose tool. Gives a clearer understanding of what is happening below ground before breaking through,i.e. digging on, holding mid tube etc.. Stainless for ease of cleaning and to stop corrosion.

I think waterboard keys are used to open and close underground valves/stop cocks. They are usually made of carbon steel which will rust and the diameter tends to be on the light side. (10mm) The listening rods where a different tool that was used to locate leaks underground. They had a round cup which was placed near your ear and an extendable rod that was placed on the ground. You might get better results with a 16mm stainless rod 1000mm long and weld a "T" at one end.

Great answer. The hardest thing to learn is reading the dog in front of you, is it ready or not. Some people never learn this. They get lucky and get a dog that is strong enough mentally to overcome an early bad experience. In time with enough dogs like this they form the opinion that the dog will just GO if it is Good enough. They even get lazy and don't start the pup through the stages of bushing, ratting, tied out at digs. etc.. All dogs that start badly they put down to the dog been from a rubbish line. They never take any of the blame themselves. IMO if the dog fails you should bel

dont think you can get much cleaner than this folks
p3d replied to tb25's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Would not call it a badger hunt, more like a badger bait. The pocket under the shed looks like it was opened with a shovel. It took three shots at 2 feet range to kill the animal. One shot to the brain pan would have been cleaner. Nothing to commend it in my eyes. Dodgy sette, dodgy use of the terrier, dodgy shooting. JMHO -
The top photo (sire) looks like it could be a first cross staff to me. (not saying it is) The all white or patched colouring could easily come from the bull blood. Just goes to prove how much the black colouring dictates the "Patterdale" name. If you just posted the last Photo of the pup and said it was a Jack Russell, Who would disagree? Solid looking dogs NBW, best of luck with the litter. ATB

You need a collar to carry the transmitter. The Barrvox Pulse acts as the receiver, picking up the signal from the collar and displaying the distance and direction. The "Bellman and Flint" rechargeable transmitter on their own plastic coated collar works well with the Barryvox Pulse. ATB

If you are as young as one of the posts said. Then you are in a similar place that a lot of terrier men can remember from when they started out. (including me). Starting off with a Border or Russell that the breeding is unknown and putting a lot of time into them, is not a bad place to start IMO. You have to learn a lot about working dogs in general. You seem to be lucky to have found a couple of terriers that will teach you. It will be harder work to bring them on, but you can develop a better understanding of entering and digging to these dogs. Would it be easier to get a couple of p

Sorry for the loss of such a handy terrier. Hope you have pups that will do her proud.

Breeding/Genetic schpeel- took from another thread
p3d replied to Mosby's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
That would be a Patterdale. That's been done already. Just be sure the Pit Bull is black. And you are right . keep it quiet and they will call a strain after you. -
Great team of dogs you have there. A word of caution with the photo's. That swirl thing you are doing with the faces, - can be reversed by the anti's. Better to cover with a black square and then save the flattened image. ATB

Good write up and photo's. Best of luck with the her.

It seems that hunters have been looking for a good fold-up digging tool for a long time. The Wallace Digging Tool 1908 I think that the military tools are too small except for the lightest earths. Split a bulldog shovel and reconnect with a bolted joint. Carry it in a backpack. It may prove a stronger option if you get stuck. JMO

how to insulate breeze block kennels
p3d replied to Big bald beautiful's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
go2ground and j1985, These are excellent examples of the type of dog houses that could be used. go2ground, Great post, the step by step photo's are spot on. Even if someone can not build these themselves, the step by step could be shown to any handyman. These could not be that expensive to build. ATB -
how to insulate breeze block kennels
p3d replied to Big bald beautiful's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Just my tuppence worth, but I would not insulate the breeze block kennel. Knock the three of them into one and place insulated dog houses in them. Insulating the whole of the enlarged kennel will not help the dogs. Their body heat would not be enough to raise the temperature. But the smaller dog houses would be dry and warmed by the dog himself. The pup will bunk in with one of the dogs if you are lucky Best of luck whichever method you use. -
Spot on, the process of seeing a terrier improve on every dig. Let the game run for another day. P3D

Scruffy and Bruno. They were going to be called Scruffy and Mutt. But changed the dogs name at the last minute. We had a laugh thinking up names for them, Salt & Pepper, Tic & Tock, etc....

p3d replied to swagboy's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
WC They are great looking terriers in for avatar. Why would you not call your terriers Jack Russells, The all white must be classed as a Russell. Plummer wrote of his "Pack of Russells" and I agree that coat colour seems a bad selection for a breed/type. PTA,EPTS and the PTCGB who are they to sanction anything. How does a person tell the difference from viewing a dog, if it is heavily marked or all white, if the owner does not tell them first. Just interested. ATB
