i suggested on here about pre ban articles and maybe articles of terrier work in places where it is still legal, france etc... a fortnight or so later penny wrote and article on deerhounds workin boar etc... very good and pre ban but it was in the 1800's lol... and the end of the day its the editors of the magazine that slap down the law on the writers so i'd blame the mag not the authers...

does anyone have any experience with them for having a taste for terriers??? some of the old lurcher books describe them as fox dogs as well as terrier killers
-
very nice mate... are they all spoken for yet???
-
well done mate, they could be doin a hell of alot worse things
-
yep ted walsh for me too... and a close 2nd is plummers 'the new complete lurcher entering and training'...
-
i'm trainin a pup to the lamp so i'll probably tackle the rabbits till the grass grows, i lost out on alot of time with the crappy weather because the fields looked like they were never goin to get rid of the flood water... everything else will stop at the end of jan...

my mate recons you can use terriers for lamping
old school replied to 1#Hunter's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
i'd my first terrier when i was about 11 and i took it out with one of those old square box flood lamps... it couldnt see anythin past 20 yards but i really enjoyed any of the runs i got... tho i was easily pleased back then -
sounds like the bulb mate... there isnt much to the lamp so it wont be hard to find the problem if its something else... if it is the bulb then i'd recommend that you replace it with the same make of bulb, i think its 55watt ospram... i've tried different brands of bulb and some throw funny patterns in the beam and no matter what way i adjusted the bulb holder they were just no good...

i get more pleasure from breeding my own and seein how they turned out... buying in pups and training is a close second...

i understand that people got money from the foxes they caught in those days so it makes sense that a bullx lurcher became ideal but i still think the right type can have many uses... i've a racey 3/8bull 5/8grey that i'm hoping to do a bit of rough shooting with because she will carry everything so well... the other week she retrieved a shot pigeon but it fell at her feet so it didnt count for much...

11 months old its scared of roadside vehicles going past spews and shits [bANNED TEXT] traveling in cars quick movement ie slipping on ice when walking have you always owned it mate?? sounds like it could have been kenneled with no contact?? nervousness doesnt have much to do with working ability IMO... i had a nervous colliex that would turn on like a switch but when there was nothing to do she'd hide behind me
-
i'll probably get laughed at lol... plummer wrote about a fella that owned a 1st cross bull/greyhound, it was built like a middleweight boxer that could continue lamping rabbits long after the owner had wanted to retire... i believe that part to be true about a vast majority of bull cross lurchers... and if they fail on fox i think its a shame that they dont get passed on as rabbit dogs instead of being pts... if you get one with a racey frame and soft mouth its as good a rabbit dog as any JMHO!
-
thats what i like about the bullx too mate, i've seen quite a few bull crosses work now and with the odd exception i found them to be no worse or better than any other cross for rabbits, hares etc... although if you get a hard mouthed bullx then it usually is overkill on the bunny... i think a good 1/4bull is hard to beat....

i dont understand the thing about guests?? before i was a member i wasnt able to view the forum until i created an account so where do guests come from, do they have an account??
-
quite interested in hearing what they were like on fox pre ban or otherwise???
-
i've been chasin after that one for years... i saw a tiny clip of it once but and it looked brilliant... didnt hear much in the way of bad language but the top gun soundtrack was really suited... that foxing on the fells by andrew, its very good!! the dogs hunt as good as any hound and i'd love to have a crack at that sort of hunting... i loved the scene when a fox ran round a huge stone slab a couple of times then the dog and fox stand lookin at each other, suddenly the penny falls and the lurcher runs over the slab and the chase is on again.. very very good!!!! its fair to say theyre no
