  1. the top german scopes will take some beating. atb
  2. hi are all of these polecats young? i'd send a big hob down any local rabbit burys mate, before you lose any more. stick with the traps. sound slike the terriers have earned some extra food of late, good job! atb
  3. i consider the fact that a pup has paperwork as secondary,it should be well bred, well formed and healthy( as should the dam and sire). i prefer to buy from people i know/are known to people i know have an understanding of dogs/the breed. alot of money to be made with dogs( irrespective of working abilities) and bullshit can baffle alot of us. i agree with the point that being able to trace the heritage of a dog is important,a responsible breeder will be able to tell you what line the dog is from( again relying on trust!). dogs are stolen and sold/bred from.the micro chip is a very good thi
  4. good looking pups mate will they be docked? where in telford are you bud? pm me if you don't want to put it on here. is the bitch working? on what? bet you are well chuffed with them atb
  5. if there are no mineral stones about mate i'd put a few up and think about some hay, beet or wheat if there are not enough other possibilities to feed in winter. keep the dogs short and they should stay. is this a young doe? are there roe in the surrounding shoots? are they likely to top them if they wander? it may be worth talking with them about trying to preserve them untill a cull is needed( we tried this for about 6 years with fallow/pheasant/boar in our shoot in germany the answear was yep,and the next thing you know the idiot was shooting everything that came over the border but we
  6. i take it you mean a target club? where are you? is the land cleared for a .22 lr? any clubs will more than likely have a web page where you can get in touch. good luck
  7. nice one. did the fox kill the lamb?
  8. once again i stand corrected( forgot to square). i think the gist was there though i must say that i find the .17 a good fox caliber( range and target ballistics) but as i said in a previous post these things leave room for discussion. good to see the chaps know their onions. atb p.s. i would not rely on even a thick bush as a stop.
  9. what are the terrier men scared of? the jagd terrier is an excellant ALL ROUND working dog,in no way any different in agression towards people than any other terrier in the right hands. yes they are pretty tough dogs( they have to be as they are bred to hunt quarry that can and will defend its self admirably). i would like to point out that the jagd terrier was bred out of fox terrier stock(+ some manchester terrier before he became so lightly built) they were bred to be very hard and FIND with a drive that i have yet to see in other breeds. that they are often too big to go to ground i ca
  10. can we stop bickering and get a topic started as a petition? how can we get in touch with the mods to get this off the ground?( i'm a computer tit ) sooner the better. atb
  11. that a .22lr may not travel 5km is clear to me ( this is a range given while training for the german hunting licence) maybe i should have said "maximum danger zone". i did put that the principle was " limited balisticly" meaning exactly the point of "wasted energy". if anything i wrote seems incorrect then i stand corrected. the point being that for me the .22 was the optimal caliber. and that this decision must be made by the individual suiting his ground and quarry. as with all caliber questions there is plenty of room for discussion and thats good so. every man an opinion. good to be p
  12. being true that the .17 is a smaller bullet, physics tells us that speedxmass= energy the.17 will travel much faster and therefore bring more energy to the target( limited by the resistance ballisticly) the .22rf is capable of traveling a huge distance ( "danger zone" at 32 degrees from the ground is about 5km!) so you cannot shoot at all with no stop.the .17 will obviously travel further. this question has been on here a few times( indeed i asked it myself) and causes the opinions to flow on in.a good thing if you are after info. horses for courses mate.
  13. my guess is that it has to do with being in season. any problems with young dogs i always take it back to training,90% of the time its not the dogs fault re do the retrieve, recall, and down( down i find difficult with headstrong dogs,as its a submissive position) this will work i'm sure. is she hyper before you go out? let her run next to the bike( in a harness) and only fit a "working" collar when she is to work( with blood trailing dogs that work different jobs this is the "switch" to concentrate, nose down or the gaffer will be pissed!!!) consequence and patience. if the dog won't ret
  14. great pics. good lookig dog. just used to rabitt? atb
  15. well marked pup how old? whats the work to be done? atb
  16. sound job,bet he tasted great, shot by the own hand and all that the weight varies from area to area, wht kind of weight do they bring? i have always weighed them just to keep records for the shoot/monitor the weight age. mostly not that important but we shot deer in the same area( 1000 hectar) for 15 years and we had improved the weight considerably. a selective cull of old doe, weak bucks works absolute wonders. the standard of heads too. good to see people shooting good bucks after the rut and not "on sight". a man who takes the sport seriously and does the right thing for "his deer" t
  17. one of the german firms brought out such a scope a few years back.concave at the bottom for lowest mounting on rifles( may have been zeiss?) i saw one at the jagd ang hund( biggest hunting show in germany).i don't think it really took off.or just too expensive.
  18. for rabbits short range( 50-60 yds) the .22 rf is very quiet with a moderator is the tool for the job. at longer range( after 100yds) the .17 hmr is still very accurate.if you apply for fox( as i was told by my fo you should apply forr 17 or more.home office would reccomend abigger caliber) and you can take fox and bunnys at quite some distance. if shooting rabbit on foot or out of a jeep i'd take the .22 rf if longer range needed the.17 the .22 is cheaper to shoot, quieter with moderator.does tend to richochet. the .17 has more power, accurate at distance 100m + as mentioned each
  19. check with your firearms officer mate, even on your land it may annoy somobody and you lose the ticket, atb
  20. just the way it goes sometimes well done mate.
  21. the after rut could be in swing.any doe that has not taken will be chased up. older bucks know this and as long as enough testosterone will spring to a call like its the end of july. can be quite teretorial still. as for the kid, are you sure it was a buck? (as mentioned above they are still a bit anti) as for doe buck, they are in my experiance also quite aggressive towards other deer( mostly raised testosterone is the cause, normally due to old age/hormane inbalance) the likelyhood of her bearing kids/tolerating them anywhere near is not high at all. i shot a lady boy which i had watc
  22. well done bud, good experiance for both of you. i have to say the buck does look like he is quite young( as far as i can see from the pic). ears seem big in reation to head, strong contrast in colour of the mask, inverted roses and little mass on the antler. i would be interested to hear how the teeth( molar, pre molar. most importantly the p1) are worn? without seeing it " en natura" it can only be guess work really of course i'm not being funny i am just interested in the rough age/weight etc( i can only compare to german roe, at this age he would weigh around 16/17 kilo in the area i
  23. the best thing to do would be to ask the smith who will fit it for you. you may see a shadow at the bottom of the scope( probably not but i'd play it safe) are you looking at fixed mounts?
