  1. i lived between paderborn( around ten years) and steinfurt( four years) and davensberg ( near dortmund) also for four years before moving back to the uk in jan 2008. i have worked the dogs in westerwald( staatsforst) and spent some time in gamberg( nearer tou you) in privately owned forestry. along with brandenburg ( private 2 different shoots) and a fair few in nrw ( paderborner/lippischer staatsforst). a bit of a way from you. if it eases the mind then ok. as in your post i think the training should come first. as for safety " dat wat du nicht kennst, dem schiess du nicht tod". i had a
  2. cheers hunting dachshund. i have e-mailed the teckel club i belong to and they don't use them either, possibly a local thing? most of the people i know wont even let a dog run collerd( an elastic warn strip is used with a velcro fastener, mobile number written on it).the risk of a dackel going to earth alone would forbid it.if a bell should be used i would reccomend an elastic band he can lose if snagged up.

    whats this

probably the best thing to do would be to identify before you shoot( or your mate). if you don't know it, don't kill it.( season included) what if that had been some protected bird? you would be in it up to your neck and rising. any body can make a mistake, try to learn from it. they are tasty wee birds aren't they . atb
  4. as a question of ethics there can be no right or wrong. i think if the man has the opportunity, the storage, the time then fair play to him. how often do we hear of big bags of pigeon and rabbit being wasted? same ball game. they are classed as a pest/vermin/ neozoen. and should and must be culled/controlled. we took five geese and 4 mallard with 3 guns and throroughly enjoyed the weather. got a few bits done in the shoot beforehand. sat we took some more mallard( ten) and we shall have a go for some geese tomorrow evening. by no means do we intend to erradicate either species from our
  5. http://s934.photobucket.com/albums/ad187/w...e13weeks001.jpg here a link to a new pic of tyke( now 13 weeks)
  6. bet the farmer was chuffed the young dog make contact? i find that sometimes the bitches mature a little earlier than the dogs, now he knows the crack he will be up and at them i'm sure. atb for the season bud.
  7. forgoy to say that the poi will return to normal when cooled down ( prob quite obviuos to most of the readers) if you know the rifle its not a problem. when a quick sequence of shots fired etc. important to know the reaction and waiting times. i suppose we rarely shoot more than 2 or 3 shots depending on use. not sure how you would get a mod on one though? atb
  8. how heavy were they? around 35 kilo? we had some of these colour anomelies in germany. are they pure wild or hybrid? ( we also had ferral) good work fot the dog and good fun for you!
  9. the full stock was devised to protect the shorter barrel in mountains. and it can effect the barrel movement( you may find that after 3 or4 shots the poi changes) must not be the case. some of the newer ones have somehow gotten over the issue. cheers
  10. good girl! does she work them with brains or go for the dangerous end? good thing with light dogs they dont seem to take them too seriously. untill too late nice pics, like to hear/see more of lily. atb
  11. if stating an opinion makes someone a knob head so be it( admited the first reply was a little blase). the teckel can be a wide working dog. if the teckel "loses" game and does not return or find anew its called "running off" and you may need a loud bell. my teckel would hunt for hours only seeking me occaisionally( called by horn at the end of the day). you need an area big enough for them to work( hounding of hare and deer is only allowed over 1000 hectar in germany).we would use around five teckel,3 jagd terrier,4 jrt and a labxgspxbgs for following up wounded quarry at the end of the d
  12. that is the point i was trying to get at. just because the "hole in the end" is the right size or bigger i would not use the mod without asking a professional first. not being picky or snotty just my opinion. the reason i ask the 22/177 question is that i'm getting a 22 with a 177 mod on(sak) and so thanks for the info there. i'm not saying that it is not safe( indeed i don't qualify to give any advice on mods other than "ask someone who knows the score" as i have never used them, in germany you do not get them). i hope it works out and would be interested to hear what the result
  13. it would take some balls to try a five round grouping!! any good for bunnys?
  14. in germany its called rhd(rapid haemoradic disease) nomen est omen they also have something they call chinese plague( yhis kills around 90% in 24 hours) not sure what the real name is.
  15. where are you mate? france by any chance? i know the french use them on griffon and the like. i can honestly say i have never heard of teckel with them. and i spent a long time in germany working teckel and terrier on driven( druckjagden) shoots for deer and boar. quite honestly i have never needed a bell either. as i said if it works for you fine.
  16. if you are interested in a military carreer have a look at the reme ( royal electrical and mechanical engineers) they offer a training from around 16 as an armourer. i think it takes around 2 years( after infantry traing). you can get aprentiships with gun smiths ( rocking horse shite). try ringing any in your area and send them your cv. i wish you all the best with your choice.look into the chances of getting a job after training before deciding would be the only advice i could give you mate.
  17. coot and moorhen become pretty agressive when nesting. get rid of them bud. there are enough places for them to be, just not here

    Foxes

any wild animal that behaves in this manner is a potential danger( mange, fox worm .............) all well and good to be feeding but keep it sensible. no body wants to erradicate the fox( do they?) as for this changing any attitude towards foxes, well thats uo to you bud. shoot with a clear consience. if a bunny licks some part of your anatomy will you be selling the gun? if so give me first refusal a smashing experiance i'm sure. atb
  19. i put some pics on here a few weeks ago " new pup today" photo bucket link. will get a new one up in a bit. he is also from wales. dai jones. the dam was a belter to ground so i'm told.
  20. good looking dog bob. fox terrier? don't hear of many working over here( although i'm sure they do). nice pic
  21. you may be right that i do not have a clue. i have worked teckel in germany and have NEVER seen or heard of one wearing a bell! one of the first things a teckel or terrier should learn is the "handler trail" he will find YOU and you will not need to get the family to search for him. a teckel on blood trail will naturally be on the long lead( how on earth do you want to dertermine sighn( bllod, bone, hair) found and marked by a good dog if you are 100m away? get dirty, follow the dog! why would a teckel follow a cold trail? what is a cold trail? the term cold is used for a blood trail which
  22. if the teckel is working a scent he should be loud. if he cant find a scent shoot him!
  23. so an 8x57 mod can be used on a 300 win mag rifle? smaller projectile, bigger load and pressure. i would check with a firearms dealer. just my over carefull nature i suppose. for example a 17 hmr mod is ok with a22 rf( a bigger cal). the 9.3x 74 produces nowhere near the pressure of the 9.3x 64?
  24. i also cut the skin on the back and pull apart ( to head and back legs). quick, easy and we do not use the pelt. the bigger the handfull of fur you get on the back the easier it is.
  25. try to get her with well socialized dogs as soon as you can mate. spitz can be buggers. get her positive toward dogs again. do you know the bloke? vet bill and stuff can go to him mate( was his dog on the lead?)
