if the pup does not prove itself then it should not be bred from full stop. depending on what age the pup is entered and what chances its given to show its worth(i find some are too quick to cull "weak" stock. i put this down to them not having any finacial investment in the pups) if after trying the dog at say 12 months on fox he "jacks" or "refuses" then he should be built up( rats etc etc) and tried again at a suitable interval. if all fails then yes cull,or pass it on to a good dog man who knows the score with the dog and WILL NOT BREED FROM IT unless its proven it can do the job it w

missed my first cub of the season!
waidmann replied to langouroux's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
i have beard reports of "tied" foxes on shoots as early as september( dog and gun a few years back) i wales i believe. if that is the case then foxes mated in sept/oct would cub after 51-54 days. the first three weeks the cubs only get milk.then they will start appearing above ground. at around 6-8 weeks they will start roaming ever further from the "cubbing earth". i'm sure these early matings/cubs are the exceptions that confirm the seasons rule. but it certainly happens. one theory is that the vixens which "lose" a litter will be early(biologicly quicker to recuperate) and that older vixe -
the very best of luck when you say it was wet there, do you have any problems with the dogs and crocodiles? may be a stupid question yis waidmann

on the sporting side i would say that any quarry in kindl should not be pursued untill the young can sustain themselves( physicly and socially). on th pest controll side i would have to say that we are coming up to the time where the most damage is caused(lambs, chicken etc being taken to feed cubs). and so most of us will be in a situation where we must decide which we are following at the time(sport/controll). unlike most other species foxes will raise the young together(dog, vixen and possibly other family members as shown by the rheinhardswald study in germany)this should not be counte

FREE TO GOOD HOME PUPS(or do u get what u pay for?)
waidmann replied to Endgame's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
i have bred from terriers(four bitches i owned, two at the same time) and had some cracking pups which have been snapped up(never enough in the litter's) as the people knew the bitch(mostly well known dogs to stud). people i knew would work them and treat them with respect took them for free/covering jabs and wormers depending on how well off i was at the time. i have sold pups too at times where i was not so active and in the process of building up a pack at a price well under the going rate ( russels were fetching 600 mark at the time, i sold mine for 200 to working homes only. i.e. with hu -

my dogs would all howl when the hunting horn was sounded i think its great its quite a sight when the men playing the horn have working dogs sitting behind them like a pack of wolves calling the guns in( if the horn sounded during the hunt they would all come running to me no matter how far away they were at the time.only when on pigs would i have to "follow tongue". the big dog(lab x gsp x bgs) would howl at sirens(police, ambulance, fire engine) i think he may have been a bit confused by them(he was easily confused ). i think you know when the dog is thinking the same way as you w

a real bad situation bud i feel sorry for you both. these knocks can make you doubt you are doing the right thing,i'm sure you are. if you enjoy the lamping/ferreting and just being with the dogs outside then the game is right for you bud. if you decide to amputate then be aware of the consequences later, one leg will be doing the work of both and will wear out quicker. i'm sure the dog will get on ok and enjoy his work but will probably be retired quicker. the after operation care can be quite expensive too. as far as plating goes i have no personal experiance but i know that thes

mine get dry food supplemented with eggs, pigeon, duck, goose, pheasant anything thats available(normally whats left after dressing) and they love it. the only thing they won't eat is rabbit which i'm pleased about, they will kill and move on(not had them lie up yet). i have two jills.
-
Is a rabbit realy worth digging 15 foot for?? feck that sods law the thing will move before you get to it lol Only ever used 8ft, if it's deeper than that I don't wan't to know. the rabbit may not be worth a deep dig but the ferret is. alot of us work around poultry farms where the consequence of "deserting" a ferret could be severe. i would not leave my ferts in any set/warren,if it means digging then so be it. i do not have a finder here but the lads i go with have them,if we get a lie up then a "finder" goes in. the old line ferret in modern terms. atb

the good thing about swimming is that the joints don't suffer.its hard to tear muscles etc. thats why its used as rehabilitation after operations etc. as long as the dog is enjoying it and isn't trying to get out then you should be fine. did your mates bitch "get tight" through water work??
-
take him a bone or hide chew with you and let him have that at the peg.it will keep him busy and get him tired if you have a pocket full of dry food you can work on sit,lie down etc while you have the time together, that will keep him busy and at your peg.the best thing is to spend as much time with a pup as possible(preferably out of the house) so you have a good start there. later you can start the dummy training while out(you may be advised to throw it in someone elses swim for the water work ). i'm sure he will do well. atb

the law would only allow you to"distress" an animal "with reasonable cause" this being managment or for food, neityher would be given if the dog were muzzled. waidmann

letbus know how it goes bud/ the best of luck.

treadmills are ok for basic stamina but they tend not build up lateral muscles of feet and legs that stabilise on uneven ground. causing quick injurie which can be quite severe(i'm sure someone will be of a different oppinion but thats my view having run on mills myself and felt the pain caused on uneven ground afterwards). the best training for work(i'm no lurcher expert)is the work itself.starting sensibly and progressing to peak form.just as important imho is the winding down at the end of the season. i'm sure some do the car running as with care and if it works then fine.not for me

i try to get around the hedges as soon as the sun is out in the mornings and the little terrier knocks quite a few out from the brambles( about 9 or 10 this season often when i don't have the gun with me )at the moment often lying well away from an earth(bachelers??) out in the morning and hopefully find one out looks a good size that one,how heavy was he?
