i agree, earth work is a one dog job no matter what the quarry( "pushing on" etc) above ground multi dog works more efficiantly. i see no reason why a small terrier(in my case prt bitches at around 12 inches, easily spanable. in most cases mine were outweighed by the coon by quite a bit)should be able to take the quarry on single handedly.for what reason? if the dogs are working then all is well. each to their own. atb

i am new to lurchers too but feel i could answear the questions asked, 1. teach her all obiedience and handling commands you can,you have the time before work starts to get it right and build a "working bond" with the dog. most importantly recall, free heel sound retrieveing(waterwork) will make the dog more usefull than "just" running rabbits. 2. i would think about running her at about a year old (oppinions will differ)she should be fast enough and able to turn.too early may set her up for "yapping"/giving tounge while running. i'm sure otther, more experianced lurcher people will have othe

looks a smashing job bud good luck with it. waidmann

i have not seen the video but from what i've read( and i have worked raccoon) i do not see the problem. that the raccoon bolted is a sighn the dogs were doing there job( i have NEVER had a raccoon bolt from an earth, imho in winter they are too slow and fat and know it.and so will stand and fight. i'm not doubting that they will bolt under other circumstances, hay bails, sheds, barns etc) i have only left one dog to work them when below ground.when found above, bushing, hunting up etc i always leave the dogs run.i see no point in letting one dog take stick he doesn't need(nor does the raccoon need

Urban Fox Pic
waidmann replied to Urban Fox Control London's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
a job well done mate its sad to see such sights. with the population density in urban areas this can spread like wild fire(common earths, hold ups etc). was this a young fox? good that the suffering is at an end( it must be terrible). atb waidmann -
i stand corrected i read it a while back so excuse my old head getting a bit slow the jist was there though. no matter what a lot of pork

that photo was in the german dog and gun a while back as a world record "boar" the "bloke" is actually a young lad who chased this feral hog around putting a lot of .357 magnum bullets(yes a handgun,it was in the usa) into it untill it died (his dad was with him) i think it weighed in at around 350kg or something. i may be wrong but it looks like the same pic. atb

i would think the electric fence would do the trick(just wires about 3inches apart as high as necessary) on any shape of pond? for ease just make straight lines though. as a cheap alterative i would use a car battery(from a scrapyard, one on charge one on the fence). they are a pain(when you can't do a thing about them). all the best in getting rid of them(would it work to have a day after "mink" with a couple of terriers? to stir things up for a while? or is it illegal to disturb otters at all??) atb waidmann

if you want to keep them both then i would not keep them apart i woul get them back together soonest under supervision and make it clear that agression will not be tolerated by you.(i kept mine apart for a week then tried it, they would pretty much ignore each other untill an "oppotunity arose") the very best of luck. i hope it works out for you bud, yis

Specific FAC question... calibre and deer
waidmann replied to farmershort's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
fairy nuff, I just meant I can't kill anything more with a rim fire than I can kill with the shotgun/air rifle... it's all about the food mate. after speaking to my friendly farmer, my FEO, a chap I know who hunts, and a chap from here who very kindly gave me a call, I've formulated a plan. The 150 acre farm is in fact about 70- acres on one side of a road, and the rest on the other. FEO advises this is not big enough for a centrefire. Soooo, it just so happens that the in-laws are welsh hill farmers, none of them shoot, but they do have a 300 acre farm on the side of a big welsh m -
Specific FAC question... calibre and deer
waidmann replied to farmershort's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
having spoken(only last week) to a reliable source about the "most efficiant barrel length for .177hmr" i can only repeat his statement" the powder is burnt just before 16 inches in most cases" (meaning i guess weather conditions etc) and so i would presume that anything above that would not increase the pressure and therefore would through friction reduce the muzzle velocity?? i'm no expert in this type of thing( nor most other things for that matter ) just thought i'd throw it in as i thought it was relevant to the last post. if its bollocks then ignore it cheers waidmann -
thanks for that ric. very helpfull. one would think that basc would have something about canals/waterways. as for shooting from a boat: its common practice on the lakes when fowling,i'm not sure if you need special permission or not. then again a canal may be a different kettle of.... never mind. yours in sport michael

i did some from corrogated card/plastic.covered in the material from a dust suit. for the shape i cut around a hyper flap(are you allowed to do that ). add a nut and bolt for weight and an old fishing rod end as the pole.works a treat.just to be flash i did one in black too(painted in respective colours of course.add a bit of poly filler to the paint and it wont reflect light very well)

i have always found that raccoon "stand up and invite the dog" to take the belly( some form of strategy??) every coon the dogs have had in the open did this.they then "grab on" as you can see in the picture above and try to bite the dogs in the back of the neck. as my dogs seldom were alone( either with other dogs or me and a knife ) i never saw the outcome of a very prolonged "battle". a handy looking dog there in top condition

sorry to disapoint but i can find no law or legislation relating to shooting from hot air balloons. i'll have another look later about the canal thing though. atb
