my whippet pup on his 3rd rabbit what you think ?
waidmann replied to kirk224's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
i doubt the rabbit was dropped mate, just a tad confused. it would not be legal to drop a ferreted rabbit(it would come under the "b" word) waidmann -
grand opening 5 star fox hotel
waidmann replied to jamie2004live's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
never had any problems with plastic pipes(i always cut a slit down the bottom with an angle grinder to let water out and lay the with a slight drop from the "kettle" to the exit). what size pipe are you lads using?? i have always used 20cm for fox and 25-30 cm for badgers.i have found you only get young badger in the 20cm pipes(summer time). i have always made them at leats 6 meters long either a "y" or a two tube straight. they are very productive still and have been there for years. waidmann -

the law in germany is clearer on cats, if a cat is more than 200m fromthe nearest housing(a building that COULD be used to live in) and hunting/stalking game then he IS feral and can be shot within the law(not covering the damages you COULD be sued for by the owner). dogs are somewhat different: they must be hunting or chasing game AND be out of the controll of the owner/handler( this is difficult when it goes to court, the owner will say something like " ok the dog was 200 yards away but on the way back after i had whistled him"). shooting/trapping "pets" is a very dodgy subject(no m

as a rule 1st of may the first eggs (german rule of thumb, won't be that far off). pheasant are a couple of weeks earlier(brooding around 24 days). the chicks are self supporting from around 8 weeks(starting to spread out). i have always found it amazing that the chicks can fly almost straight away! waidmann

i have some books on fly fishing here if you are interested then pm me waidmann

i used to make stand up/sitting blinds as permanent features on our flighting ponds they save the guns carrying nets, seats and setting up(there is always one that takes AGES to get sorted). the second point is that with a fixed blind you can "allow" a certain axis of fire(restricting guns, avoiding low shots and covering another gun) they will keep the wind off and you can sit down when waiting. these lie down blinds look good for "middle of the field stuff" though waidmann

look where the cat is rubbing itself(scent marking),cover the place in vaseline with soot in. you won't need to kill the cat( your ex will when he goes on the sofa at home) there is a tea called "baldrian" (you get it in germany anyway) and it has a similar chemical make up to the pherhormone of cats(i've caught alot of cats with it ). now this attracts them like mad so whatever you do don't put it in YOUR garden, catch my drift?? waidmann

sorry to say but if the dog has worked on fox with other dogs (doubled up i presume?) and had success at the end of the dig(due to another dog) and still won't stick/push him out then you need to eother build him up big time or give him to someone who doesn't need a dog for earth work(with the understanding he will not be bred from).the other option is to cull. if he works on other quarry then i would consider giving him away before culling(he may given time be re-entered to fox). atb waidmann

vets ripping people off for docking tails!
waidmann replied to bucknut's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
at ten euro a pup he didn't need to justify anything bud scarring will of course be covered by hair but is still a potential source of irritation/infection(ever seen a terrier with the tip of its tail bare? nibbeling on the end?) i have some scars which are still painfull under psessure(where nerves have been damaged) and so can understand the reduction needed. by no means am i saying it is ABSOLUTLY nessesary but thats the way the vet did them. i would be interested to hear other oppinions though waidmann -
if he is baying and bolting thats ok(if you don't want to dig to him) but when he comes out he should be looking to get back in and find a different "approach" on to the fox( this is called "flying" where i learned the job).if he bays and then comes out and has no interest in re entering then i would suggest he is either baying blind(nervous of the dark, scent of fox he can't find) or simply jacking. has he had a fox close up(at the end of a dig),been marked/stank of fox when he comes back? are you checking the earth with an experianced dog after he "refuses"? these are all questions to be an

if he is finding to ground and giving tongue but not staying with or pushing the fox out then it may not be the work for him. have you had an experianced terrier to show him the crack? some want it some don't bud. waidmann

vets ripping people off for docking tails!
waidmann replied to bucknut's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
or if you want to make things very straightforeward just cut a 3 or 4 day old pups tail to the required length with a resonable knife and put it back with its mother. job done. never done it myself bud,the only vet who cut them off put powder on the end and sewed it. i think it would heal cleaner with less scaring don't you?? waidmann if "just cutting off" then a, make sure you are between the vertbrae b,push the skin back(away from the tip) and put a stitch in the end when done(powder the wound before sewing). as i said before its illegal if you are not qualified. w -
ther was a thread a few days ago about this(entering young dogs). flick through those and sort the sound from the bull bud ) i would think if given the opportunity your dog would be ready(only you will know if he is "mature" enough) does he go to ground? has he seen fox above ground? ratting experiance (this helps to build confidence)? waidmann

he looks to have a few ends on him, will make a nice trophy for someone i'm sure. nice bit of filming. waidmann

if he chews evrything i would restrict his access to the rooms you don't want chewing lots of bones, meat and chews and he will soon be through the worst of it. if you have a bike get him out with that(better still another dog to play with ) pups will be pups mate, its a good opportunity to teach him what "no" or "dead" means(leave it alone, drop) good luck bud and don't lose your cool waidmann

how old is the terrier bud? is he teething? the barbed wire thing is no the best idea i've heard. get him some cowhide bones, raw meaty bones, pigs ears etc.they take a while to eat and will keep him busy(and do him some good). get the dog out and give him a good run you on a bike (depending on age).it may be boredom,in which case keep him tired and he will just sleep most of the time at home(the best way to have a dog imho,he will be more content and fitter for work). feel free to pm me if i can help you further. barb wire may cost you more than you think,it could put him off rabbits, cut

i would go to australia and have a go with ned at the piggies, looks fun (i don't think my terrier and pup would be much good at the moment) if i could get to "eutopia" i would hunt all quarry on out great isle and no one would stop us,we would be congratulated upon return to the village on our good doings. my dogs would shit gold and the mrs would look like sandra bullock(and be cooking the dinner naked). at the moment both are as realistic as each other so take your pick waidmann
