I was thinking in terms of replacing the standard bullet with a ballistic tip. You can't actually reload rimfire because the brass is very soft. I realise it would be a pricey exercise buying ammo and throwing half of each round away but it might be worth it. Ric Ric I think I know where you are coming from but some smart arse is always going to pick you up on terms/info.....first off let me say I do not reload and only wave a basic knowledge of the process...BUT reloading Rimfire is a much bigger problem than the Brass being soft!!! Is this a silly question.....Can you get

A while back I started a thread on "Ammunition . . ." about reloading WMR. General opinion varied from "No point" to "Yer daft sod". Now let's see. The only point might be to change the bullets, OK? WMR is .224 calibre. There are a LOT of 30gr .224 bullets on the market. If you want to find out how they perform in the field just do it, OK? DON'T moan. Buy some Berger 30gr Moly disulphide coated bullets, pull the dodgy bullets from the WMR factory rounds, reload 'em with 30gr ballistic tips and get out there and shoot the fu**ers. He who laughs last laughs longest. Ric

Agreed. Even worse is that to judge from the recoil, and size of the guns, they weren't even using decent big-game calibre rifles. The recommended minimum in the UK to take abroad for dangerous game is .375 magnum or 9.5x74. No way were those guns in that league. Ric

Cautions of shooting birds with a rimmie
RicW replied to saxosportsaxo's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Noting the possible exceptions mentioned, the basic rule is IF IN DOUBT DON'T. Remember that a subsonic .22lr is still travelling at 500fps after 400 yds and carrying 23 ft.lbs energy. That is more than enough to kill an adult if the head is hit and God forbid that you hit a child. If the CPS decided to prosecute and a jury decided you had been careless you would be looking at a10 stretch for manslaughter. And rightly so IMO. Ric -

Standard Police Clearance check.
RicW replied to LordGamebore's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
It will show up. If he doesn't tell them about it he definitely WILL NOT get clearance 'cos they will say he attempted to conceal material facts. If he tells them he might be ok. Ric -
Bad idea mate. Have a look at the thread titled "Howa 204." RicW

During the trials (1977) for the standard NATO round the British 4.85mm (.19-223) was blowing the opposition off the landscape. Then Fabrique Nationale brought in a new 60gr spire point boat-tail with a much bigger powder charge. This was nearly as good ballistically as the 4.85. The decision to stay with the 5.56 was reached on the basis that the 4.85 could not use a folding cleaning rod. It says here. Far be it from me to suggest that vested interests played a role. As I understand it, the chamber pressure is measured in different ways by the US military and by SAAMI. Whatever may be the

John - I hesitate to disagree with someone with far more experience than myself, but is it wise to use mil.spec .223 ammo in a civilian rifle? The Small Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute, the main advisory body in the USA, states that military 5.56x45 ammunition is loaded to a much higher pressure than sporting .223 and should NOT be used in weapons marked as proofed for .223, only those proofed for 5.56x45. You might get away with it but if it is too much for your gun it would be expensive at best and lethal at worst. Lethal to the shooter that is. RicW

HOW DARE YOU. I've owned Lhasa Apsos for a large part of my life and they are WONDERFUL little dogs. Bloody bright, hard as nails and so protective.. I just wish you had met my last Apso bitch. She was just turned 18 when she died. When we adopted a kitten Ishtar came into milk for it! Fed the damn cat! When Catlet was about three a cat from down the road had a go at her. I let Ishtar out and she beat the living bejasus out of this evil moggie. Our cat was her baby but any other cat was Non Persona Grata. She also took out a 90 lb Dobie, but that's another story. . . I once asked a mate of m

cos the worlds fecked up mate,if you let your dog out everynight to go around the streets killing things like birds, rabbits, voles mice reptiles etc youd have your dog taken off you and banned from keeping dogs, yet 99% of cat owners do this everynight its fecking ridiculous if i had my way id round up every cat in britain and send em all to korea and convince the locals they taste twice as good as dog It's legal to shoot feral cats tho'. And if poor lickle pussykins turns out to be a pet . . . Use a centrefire and there'll be nowt left but fur and guts. Or there was this mate of mine,

Urban myths are those stories that go around, everybody believes them but ARE THEY TRUE? My favourite is from a biker mag a few years ago. There's this parish magazine, has a Q&A section. An elderly couple write in. Their new next-door neighbours are strange young people. They have this seriously odd plant growing in their garden. They say it is a rare Mexican cabbage but "We think it might be cannabis. We are really worried, what should we do?" The vicar replies "Nip over the fence one night, break off a few leaves. Take them home, bung them in the micro for a minute on

Yes well, I could explain the genetic mechanisms involved but the maths gets a bit heavy. You are dead right about Melanism/Albinism. Clusters of variant organisms are to be expected. Nothing weird going on so just shoot 'em as per normal! The black ones make nice gloves. RicW

Fair comments, and the question now understood in the context you originally asked for. Personally, I'd rate the ability to hit the right mark first time every time, so never take a shot I'm not certain about. Of course there's times when this doesn't always go to plan, but in those circumstances, you don't need to be superfast to finish the job. As to a lion bearing down 50 yds and nanno seconds, we don't have any in Gloucestershire Not unless you believe what you read in the redtops! Mind, the world record wild boar was shot in Herefordshire. It weighed 580 lbs. I don't know about

Zackly. The world has got a lot smaller over the last few years. Do youse guys want to be big fish in a very small pond? If you do then realise that the big pond next door is getting bigger and the little fish are gonna GET ET by the big yins. You may not like it but that's the way it works. Ric

I fully appreciate that the ability to fire 40 odd aimed rounds in 60 seconds is of no relevance to sporting shooters and only peripherally of interest to range shooting, no more than an interesting way to spend a lot of money in a very short time. But as I said above, the ability to get off a second shot in minimum time is of value in the field. If you are shooting rabbits for pest control being able to clean kill 3 or 4 before they bolt(!) is useful, and if you are shooting fox or deer a fast second shot if your first fails to drop your quarry gives a humane ability to minimise suffering.
