  1. only an idea..are you allowed to think being a mod n all that.. Think? Who needs to think when you're a Mod? Every bit of information ever released is right there on the tip of your tongue when you're a Mod What I say bro. Mind you, I'm a Rocker. Kicked the livin' bejayzus out of a few mods back in the 60s . . . Ric
  2. Snap - you and me both. I learned to shoot long range with aperture sights. As you know, you can't "aim off". Dial it in, boy, dial it in. As I said above, KISS. I don't want all this crap in my field of view . . . Looks like a fixed mag scope, around 12x, 1/4 MOA/click turrets is gonna be my best bet. Back to where I started from. Now, if you want to talk maker I've taken a lot of long shots with a camera. Nikon make some classy 'scopes . . . and they always were the best glass . . . Ric
  3. Yup, it's jannock. Pat got the job cos 1.) he could drive like a rally man and 2.) he could shoot a big pistol and 3.) he didn't give a monkey's. Still got blown away with a Tommo though. Mind, the guys who shot him ended up wearing concrete weskits. Under 50 foot of water. JUST DON'T ASK ME HOW I KNOW, OK? Ric
  4. There's always whatisname Ferry. Dredging the barrel though. Ric
  5. I've actually got meself a bit away from the point. I'm not concerned about make, TBH. What I'm trying to sort out is the right magnification, field of view, reticle, etc etc, for a high velocity small calibre rifle to be used at 100 - 500 yards on "varmints" ie rabbits, crows and pigeons on the ground and fox if the chance arises. If it works out as I hope I will be sitting in a hide with 400 - 500 yards of open field available and if it gets into my field of view and moves it won't move for long! Ric
  6. Yer daft 'a'porth. People form syndicates to play card games, doms, . . . all sorts. A mate of mine worked as driver for Da Capo of a Syndicate in Corsica. He carried a Colt .45 in a shoulder holster and had a sawn-off clipped under the dashboard. Trust me, if you are a member of a Syndicate out there you get a LOT of respect. Though you also make a lot of enemies who tend to carry sub-machine guns. As my mate found out . . . the hard way. Pat Harris RIP Ric.
  7. Thanks Jamie. The Zeiss is in my top three. I fancy the 72mm objective but Jayzus will ye look at the price! I'll check out Nightforce. Ric

  10. The film got "premiered" last night. George Clooney does the voice of Mr Fox. Supposed to be v good. Many plaudits. Can't remember whether George is an anti tho'. Probably is, most "luvvies" are. Helps their public image. Can anyone name an actor who is pro hunting? Swampy I just lurv ninging dahrling! Charlton Heston. He's pres of the NRA. Clint Eastwood. Robert Redford. Steve McQueen. Yul Brynner . . . . Yes Yes and Yes. Any that are British? Hunting is not looked at in the same way over there, lucky b'tards! rgds Swampy Ninging at 10:35 15/10/09

  12. Mainly seeing the quarry! My eyesight is, er, well, er, less good than it once was - and it wasn't all that good in the first place. Before any one has a go at me for risking shots I can't be sure of making, that is why I'm investigating as much as possible now, and why I am prepared to pay for top line glass. Actually, the Leupold 15x Tactical appeals to me. If that Canadian sniper could pick off a Taliban machine gunner at 2657 yards with one it should do the biz for Charley at 400 yards! Ric
  13. Amen to that. Hence my concern about downrange killing power. Will you be reloading? I know there's not much choice of factory ammunition, but at those ranges the Remington 32gr V-Max should be a one shot drop. Ric
  14. Mr L - thanks! I am glad to learn from your experience. I would not be using it as a "dedicated fox round" so much as a "dedicated if it turns up inside 500 yards blow it away round" If I can build some good fast 40gr BTs that will give reliable kills on crows or foxes at long range then that will suit me fine. What I don't want to do is take shots that risk leaving an injured animal to crawl away and die in pain. So good 40gr BTs should do the biz? XLNT! RicW
  15. Jamie - I'm pretty well decided on calibre. If I were to be tempted away from .204, it would be 5mm/35 SMc. 30gr round, 4800fps MV? Oo-er pretty scarey. What I am looking at now is how much magnification do I need for small quarry at ranges up to 500 yds? If it all works out as I hope I'll be able to put a Zeiss 6-24 x 56 or equivalent on THER BEAST. Snap - my prejudices all say "single mag scope, KISS. (Keep It Simple Stupid)" but I reckon I'll need to use it as a sighting scope as well as aiming. RicW
  16. What you just sed sums it all up, lol. But he can bollocks if he thinks anything is changing, ive been walking these fields, river, and woods since i was a very young lad, i wont cause any damage or trouble but ill keep doing what i do. I probably know the local land better than anyone else, him included. If you had a right of way it would give you firmer ground to argue from. But hey like you say, you'll carry on walking the ground.......and he didn't tell you to "get orf ma land" So maybe everything'll be cool Hope so....................just a thought< there's a phrase/saying that g
  17. OK. I recently got involved with a thread about .204 Ruger on rimfire . . . This is still theory at the moment, Mr Armchair asking silly questions. When I leave University at the young age of 62 next year I plan to take up field shooting. Assuming I can get a ticket for centrefire I hope to build a serious long range varminter in .204. 26" barrel, ya-di-da. The places where I will mostly be shooting are on the South Downs. Big fields, open country, definitely sniper not stalker. So . . . How much 'scope do I need? First thought is 6-24 but is that enough for long range crows/pigeons? The
  18. The ballistics imply that, at least in theory, the 40gr BT round will have more than enough kinetic energy at 500 yards - 400 ft.lbs! - to destroy the central nervous system of a fox with a single hit. I would be very leary about using fragmenting rounds at that range. The velocity has dropped to the level where, as Mr Logic has said, there is a real risk that the bullet will explode on impact. This would cause a major surface injury which would still allow the animal to run away, to die in great pain after days of suffering. IF (and it is still if) I get this gun, I would have no qualms about
  19. Thanks people. I don't want to hijack this thread so I'll keep it brief. 26" Border barrel, 1:11 twist, heavy profile, fluted. Ought to shoot 32gr V-max up to 40gr hollow point. Remi 700 blueprinted action, Jewell trigger, AICS stock. Zeiss 6-24 x 56? Or even go for an 8 x 32 to get the long range crows? I'm still counting chickens before they're hatched but at 62 I have a decent chance of getting a centrefire on my new ticket. Remember that I had a ticket way back and killed a lot of paper! Ric

  21. Great! Thanks guys. I want to ba able to shoot 40gr accurately for long range fox, so what you say is good news. Ric
  22. Mr Logic - You interest me. As I have said, I am hoping to build a .204 as a long range varminter. As I read it, the standard 1:12 twist is good for 32 and 36 gr, great for 40gr and total crap for 48gr HP. On the other hand, 1:9 is great for 48gr but 32gr blow up in the barrel cos they spin too fast. I was thinking 1:10 should be the ideal compromise. You rate 1:11? This will be a Border barrel, 26" fluted, heavy profile. Sniper not a stalker! RicW
  23. Open FAC for years so hopefully no problem. Cheers Mick Home Office guidelines (for what they are worth) state that Section 1, ie long magazine, shotgun can be allowed for the purpose of controlling flocking corvids (sounds rude) and other avian pest species. Seriously illegal to use one to shoot game birds without a permit from Natural England Licensing Unit. Even intention to do so will cost you your FAC for good Ric
  24. Well . . . for what it's worth . . . I am planning/hoping to build a 204 varminter. It ain't a meat round. High velocity fragmenting ammo does NOT make for good eating. I have to ask why you bought it? It really is a "varmint" round. Totally lethal on impact but wrecks the meat. I want it as a long range crow/feral pigeon/fox round. If you want to shoot for the pot you'll have to use heavier bullets and then your accuracy will go to hell in a basket. Keep us posted tho. ATB Ric
