  1. as NL said try to do this somewhere the pup cannot get past you or the game may start to consist of the you chasing the pup around. either way you have to get the pup to want to come back to you. mine did the same sort of thing and you just have to get the pup to focus on you. no retrieve-game stops. all easier said than done though. good luck with it.
  2. its cracking down here but my dog's laid up. . good luck to all out tonight.
  3. nice looking pup. plenty of time. he'll be right don't try him on the lamp at his age and this time of the season or you may well sicken him. get him out mooching and ferreting. always next season for the lamp.
  4. Other than genuine fieldsport and country enthusiasts, does anyone really know or care what is happening out on the land ? i'd say not really. plenty though seem to want to share their opinions with the misguided masses via headline seeking media. we just keep our heads down and carry on. shame that any time we want to get our side across it always seems to get the worst sort of publicity. like said earlier though , plenty of so called dog men do no good for our cause either .
  5. mine's well bred phil. just like a kid who had too many blue smarties
  6. sounds like mine barks his nuts off at other dogs. he's laid up with a broken toe but thought we were going lamping when i stuck my jacket on earlier and pissed up my barbour the other week. bloody collies. he's a right star though . oh and as i've just been reminded by her indoors he cocked his leg on the xmas tree. and as for not having another he'll probably live me out
  7. mines in his first season. still learning but putting em in the bag steadily enough for the ground i lamp. had issues with the retrieve but thats coming on too. proven steady with stock. biggest thing for me is the heart he shows and the effort he puts in.
  8. i'm running my first collie x after having running dogs for almost 40 years. always run beddy and dh types before. there is definitely something about a collie x and i'm not really sure what it is. i'm having to put more in but getting way more back than from any other lurcher i've ever had. very engaging dogs. mine's knocked a toe up at the minute and its plain to see he's more p*ssed off than me. playing the wounded soldier though and lovin it in the house
  9. been up the local vet with buck this morning. he's done a toe. 5 days on anti inflamatory meds and we'll see from there. he's not going to be out for a while now and i'll keep him indoors till he picks up. bit of a bonus though, had him chipped for free.
  10. had a chat with sandymere and my mate, the local kennelman has been up to look him over. its just a toe. few easy weeks in front of him now before he even gets off a lead. thanks lads
  11. thanks for the advice. he's in the warm and resting. he's just been out for a pee ( the longest one i've ever seen any dog do ) and his back right foot is sort of pointing straight down when he's carrying it. he can put some weight on it but he aint comfortable. like i say i gave him a thorough look over and nothing seems amiss. i will have him in tonight and vet tomorrow. sandymere is local so i'll try to get in touch.
  12. had buck out again last night. no issues, ran well. wiped down and checked on return then fed and put in the kennel for the night. let him out of the run about 7 this morning and he's favouring his back left leg and not wanting to put any weight on it. gave him a right look over. no cuts , swelling or heat anywhere from hip to toe. nothing in his pads and no damage to pads either. never made a murmer or indicated that he had pain anywhere when i was checking him over. he's himself and not out of character in any way. any suggestions other than resting him and keeping an eye on him ? if he
  13. or an absolute steal for someone like yourself who thought £300 was a bargain. not worth a slanging match is it ? neither of us will be having it but we're all entitled to our own opinions. like i said i'm sure it will make someone a good mutt.
  14. oddly enough the price has been reduced this morning to £250
  15. maybe i'm knocking on a bit and a bit sceptical. i reckon the sale price has a lot to do with the price he paid. at the end of the day its a rabbiting dog and a young un at that. and i am looking at it from my perspective in that i have permission with a fair few bunnies on it but i'll not be getting big numbers so i wouldnt buy a sledgehammer to crack a nut. as i also said before i have a real soft spot for a whippet bed cross but if prices are going like this i'll no doubt not be having another, as all dogs grey and shaggy they do appear to have become very fashionable and attracting big
  16. like all vermin, rabbits are very adaptable and are changing their breeding times to suit weather, climate, food sources, predation. if they didn't, we'd have wiped em out years ago
  17. 16 weeks is young and as said the pup is probably doing what pups do. but as you have young kids around you have to involve the kids in the training as the pup has to know its place in the pecking order. i've always had dogs while my kids were born and growing up and the dogs have always respected my kids. we frequently have a friend round who has a two year old boy. my two dogs even do what he tells them. its how it has to be or kids get bitten and dogs get binned. not fair on either.
  18. nice bit of good fortune there. all the best with the pup.
  19. i took a 12 month old dog on in june last year. i very much doubt all the hard work is over.
  20. the advertiser must have been looking at too many "good with all small furry animal" and "excellent show dog" adverts. i'd rather buy a rottiewawwa than spend 300 hard earned on a rabbit dog
  21. trial offered yet not many rabbits around ?? may be genuine and i'd have a bed x whippet in a heartbeat but not a 15 month old dog at that price
  22. i agree with this. the pup may not have learned its place yet. but it has to, smartish . make sure it respects your kids as well as you or its out with the digging boots
  23. fair few out on my permission. 3 slips for 1 rabbit. horizontal rain , big wind and waterlogged fields. of the 2 that got away the first just made the hedge after a long run in the stubble. the second ran over a brow out of the lamp so i switched off and he came back. buck did well in my book tonight. grub well earned
