  1. Brilliant photo's and proof that you were dedicated to the birds you kept, I take my hat off to you....
  2. For the first day or two the parents eat the excrement sac as its high in nutrients then they deposit it away from the nest until the chicks can excrete over the side of the nest pan which is usually after 7 or 8 days. With natives/British which are usually rung after 5/6 days the hen can sometimes get confused and see the ring as a foreign object in the nest and throw the chick out of the nest but this generally never occurs with canaries. With no disrespect to that man, he is talking nonsense...
  3. Classic photo of the chaffie hen, in my experience chaffies are not easy to tame, I have bred them successfully only a couple of times and that was from a hen which was hand reared....
  4. I agree with your view on chickweed it is the best rearing food you can give to your birds and love your sentiment regarding it in your post. As a rearing food I give my birds a mix of eggfood, grated broccoli, grated carrot sprouted seed with a spoonful of honey and a dash of powder multi vits. Chickweed, groundsel,Sheppard's purse, plantain, sow thistle and knot grass are all coming into season now and are a great rearing food as well...
  5. Tommydeer you would probably be better off if you waited until the end of the breeding season to buy birds, reason being that this far into the season most people who breed natives/british have their birds paired up and their set up sorted, any birds available at this time of year are generally problem birds which have never bred in the past or have had some ailment or are too old etc etc, basically you are buying someone else's problem...
  6. If you follow Fireman's advice you will not go wrong, best of luck with your breeding season.
  7. Best forum for info is...... http://www.nativebirds.co.uk
  8. I agree Glosters, Irish of fifes are great feeders.....
  9. Buster start off with a pair of greenfinches, a pair of siskins and maybe a pair of redpolls, it is possible to breed these in cages but a small aviary or flight cages would be better. A pair or two of either Irish Fancy or fife canaries would be a good start also if you get a couple of double breeding cages these canaries are not difficult to breed. A good British finch mixture /canary mix will be needed for them with added greens a few times a week, broccoli or wild seed heads is what I feed plus soaked seed and eggfood during the breeding season as a rearing food for the chicks.
  10. If you cant get wild food feed broccoli, grate it into the eggfood.
  11. Start off with Greenies, siskins and redpolls
  12. You should have no bother picking up young canaries at the end of the breeding season...
  13. Here's a photo of the best Siskin hen I have ever seen exhibited, the bird won best in Show at practically every CBS show in Ireland during the '08/'09 show season and best in show at the INBBS show which is a specialist Native/British show with close on 600 birds entered....
  14. I'd be inclined to agree with Neil, its a plucking problem not a mite problem because if the bird was bald from a mite infestation when you handle him the mite would be so plentiful on him that they would be visible.
  15. Spot on Kev, that's sound advice and Craigyboy's advice would work as well. You dont mention how long it was since the hawk had a go at him and you putting the cover on his cage? In my experience after an attack like this the birds generally drops dead immediately so I would be confident that he will be fine by morning. Offer him a bath and if he bathes immediately its a good sign he is Ok.
  16. 19 from a 40 holer including 8 from a stop end.
  17. Its bulk feed and loses all nutrients when boiled, much better to soak and let it chit for all round goodness....
  18. Best of luck with your canaries, cage is not ideal a double breeder would be better. Be careful using animal hair as nesting material particularly sheep wool or horse hair it can get wrapped around the birds feet and cause their toes to fall off.
  19. My late Grandfather who farmed and lived his entire life in Co.Galway had a still on the go for years, he always referred to poteen as a drop of the aul crater..... Good poteen is very easy to drink but must always be treated with respect
  20. Great to see young lads showing so much interest. Pardon my ignorance but what wood were you after? was it Willow? or mavbe Hazel?
  21. Here's some Beyers germination seed I've soaked and allowed to chit, ready to feed now and if you want to keep it right store it in the fridge
  22. Try the link below... http://www.cagefronts.co.uk/
  23. If you like canaries start off with a few pairs off Irish fancy or fifes who will breed relatively easily for you in breeding cages in your shed, with regard to the aviary try some greenfinches, siskins or redpolls to start off with as these natives are fairly trouble free breeders as well. Good luck with your new set up whatever you decide to do...
