  1. it didnt do very well on the show bench !!! i had a crossbill mule that did better !!! Not that you need to be told but I find linnet crosses tend not to colour up too good and get overlooked on the bench....
  2. Cant argue with that, its great that there is a six or eight week gap between the end of the ferreting season and the start of the breeding season and just when the moult is coming to an end the hunting season starts again.....
  3. Another cracker, colour fed perfectly not a feather burnt...
  4. The photo does not do the bird justice, I was stewarding the judge Owen Welsh at that show and I knew the minute it was put up on front of him it had won best mule/hybrid in show. Mules like this one are far and few between. The feather quality was superb and the bird showed himself to perfection. A lovely bird...
  5. Good man Niall, very informative read....
  6. I see the odd wild one out ferreting but usually they arrive here in their thousands around mid January from Scotland & the UK and feed on alder seeds close to river banks and when this food is depleted they hit the peanuts in garden feeders, 3 or 4 years ago it would be normal to see up to 40 siskins in the garden around late January/early February, last year they were far and few between & this year I have not seen one. I have five or six aviary bred pairs that will call them in when they hear them flying over but they are just not here this year. I put it down to weather patterns,
  7. The bottom line of this law is that you must be able to prove that any british birds in your possession are captive bred which is very hard to do if you are standing on front of a judge and the expert witness for the prosecution is a certain Mr.C. Basically the burden of proof is on you.
  8. Des & Joanne should be able to help you out.... http://www.priorspetproducts.co.uk/ Check them out they are genuine people...
  9. With the recent hard weather I have 12 feeders hanging in my garden filled with peanuts, niger and sunflower hearts to feed the finches close to my area.Today I had about 20 goldfinches, 30 redpolls,as many chaffinches and a few greenfinches on the feeders. I also supply a dish of water for them as well. I was delighted to see some Bramble-finches running with the chaffies which is a rarity in Ireland. It would be good to hear what birds you have visiting your garden??
  10. Goldie/Bullies are lovely hybrids and if coloured up properly and have size (with no northern blood ) are great birds for the bench....
  11. Yes mate the boys sing the girls don't P1 what age should they start singing? oh and ha ha The general rule is cocks will sing and hens wont but as they come into breeding condition usually around late march or earlier if they are subject to artificial light longer than daylight hours, blow the feathers back from around the vent, cocks will have a slightly protruding vent and hens will have a flat vent. About this time as well the cocks will sing and display to the hens...
  12. Welcome, its good to see another ferreter on board....
  13. Goldfinches generally colour up better after two or three years so their mules being offspring should follow suit however with mules its best to start colour feeding in late June through to the completion of the moult...
  14. The level of intelligence of some people on this site absolutely amazes me at times.... Tom DO NOT try to catch em from the wild...not only is it illegal, it is cruel.! birds caught from the wild very rarely breed and a large percentage would die when places in captivity. you have done the right thing by posting on the Native Bird Site hopefully you will get a response from reputable breeders on there. Are you only after goldies and bully's...? and what experience do you have with keeping birds...? :clapper: Cant agree more Kev......

  16. Thanks for the photo's they coloured up nicely....
  17. Dried mealworms have no nutrition and can be bought live cheaper. Check out the link below... http://www.livefoodsdirect.co.uk/
  18. My flights measure 14ft x 5ft x 8ft high and I only have three breeding pairs (different species) housed in them, 4 pairs with a push. The size you mention in my opinion is only suitable for one pair but good luck whatever you decide to do.. By the way if you have British/Natives put in plenty of cover for them not nest boxes... One year I was successful with a trio of goldfinches in these flights.

  20. Good man Kev, is that the bird I think it is? Bred by a lad who goes by the name of Linnet? If so I've seen it and properly managed it will not be beaten on the bench. Best of luck with it...
  21. Hardwoods as have already been mentioned are best, Beech, Ash, Thorn & Oak if seasoned for a year. I prefer the above but I cannot always get a supply so burn turf (peat) a 5 ton load lasts for the winter and if its properly dried beats all...
