  1. Toots & the maytals, saw them perform live at Electric picnic festival 2 weeks ago but Mr.Hibbert only performed briefly because of laryngitis, his daughter did him proud though and carried on the set brilliantly
  2. If you intend breeding mules with whatever Native you choose make sure that the cock be it linnet, goldie, greenie etc is not in earshot of a hen bird of his species because he will only spend his time calling to her and ignore the canary hen. put a cock canary in view of the hen canary divided by wire and when she squats for him the native should oblige. (Edited to correct spelling)
  3. In my opinion its fine to run 2 hens with one cock that is out of site divided by a solid cage slide if its canaries because the hens will hear the cock singing to them and will squat readily for him but if its a Native/British cock and the intention is to breed mules a wire divide is essential.
  4. Thanks Fireman, its a friendly site that has helped out a lot of people from time to time.
  5. For your flight you could house 3 pairs of natives, good species to start with would be Greenfinches, Siskins & redpolls. For your shed you could keep a few pairs of canaries and a native or two to mule with. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
  6. Thanks x38, some of these ailments appear in Native/British birds which I keep so your post has been very informative to me.....
  7. I agree with Fireman on this. He will stop singing when he goes into the moult and may not sing again for a few months, all you might here is broken song but by January of next year he should be starting to get into full song. How much he sings is down to how healthy he is and full health can be ensured with the correct diet. Alaunt touched on the subject saying to avoid fatty seeds such as hemp & niger. A good canary mix such as beyers, countrywide, versalle laga or the likes is fine plus greens once a week and multivitamins once a month in the water, you could also offer soaked seed onc
  8. I used a level teaspoon of Carophyll red to a litre of water when I've used it, 5 days on and 2 days off using just water, this way the bird will not be burnt and it gets a break from the colour food which if used in excess can cause liver damage....
  9. I agree Bunnys and if you want to breed a siskin mini mule for showing the best hen to use is a Irish/fife cross because the roundness of the fife and the snipey head of the Irish will show in the young which makes for a good cobby snipe headed siskin mule, exactly what will catch a good judges eye... (edited to correct spelling)
  10. Fingers crossed for you, the hen is obviously still on form, at this time of year it being so close to the moult (my canaries have started with one or two exceptions) it is possible she may start to moult whilst sitting the eggs and jump the nest, I hope this is not the case it mostly depends on the local temperatures and decrease in daylight hours....
  11. Well done, I like the cinnamon greenie mule, get the colour food in
  12. Nice photo's, well done..... Start getting the colour food in now....
  13. He may have got his wing caught up on the bars of the cage front and cannot fly, it might not look obvious (dropped wing) and if this is the case it will heal and he should be able to get on the perch within a couple of weeks. Lower the perches in the cage to about 2 inches from the floor and watch to see if he can use them. Be sure to leave water on the cage floor in a flat dish so he can get a drink...
  14. Here's the link..... http://www.nativebirds.co.uk
  15. A couple of pairs of Irish fancy canaries would be good to start off with, I know you say you've no interest in breeding but when you build a flight and put the birds in you'll most likely change your mind With regard to finches and their song a cock goldfinch and a cock linnet are great singers or a couple of cock mules be it goldfinch or linnet mules are a joy to hear if finch noted and in top form. Good luck with whatever you decide to do
  16. I paid 14 euro for a 100g tube in January '10.....
  17. Straight to the point I cannot argue with your sentiment...
  18. Start of the moult for me,I use carophyll red generally but last year used Quiko colour food and its the only other one that did the same job as carophyll red.
  19. No worries Moll, if we were talking face to face this conversation would only have taken 2 minutes
  20. Yes I'm talking about liquid solution Moll Each ml contains 200 mg of tylan so therefore the dosage we are both using is the same It must be the same for poultry as canaries
  21. The dosage I've posted was given to me by a very experienced bird man from Cumbria who breeds up to 200 Norwich canaries every year and I have used this dosage for canaries with success in the past.
