  1. Not unheard of, hen mules can be the best feeders you ever had in your birdroom.
  2. At least the bird is not dead if that is any consolation to you, I've had it happen to me and always found the bird dead. if the birds leg is swollen and the ring is cutting into the leg cut the ring off with a nail clippers and bathe the wound with an antiseptic like savlon or tcp in a solution of water to prevent infection. Fingers crossed for you.
  3. Yes Goldfinch hens have bred successfully with cock canaries but the cross is far more likely to get mules to the sticks using a cock Goldie and a hen canary.. At five years old a hen bird of any species of Native would be classed as a bit over the hill but there are exceptions to the rule... I have a mate who bred goldfinches off a seven year old hen some years ago...
  4. Hello Scothunter, if you have your mind made up about British (we call them Natives in Ireland) start off with a pair of greenies because after nearly forty years of selective breeding in captivity they are nearly as prolific a breeder as most breeds of canary with the exception of Norwich which have had the rearing of chicks instinct bred out of them for various reasons. Siskins & Lesser Redpolls are also a good bird to start off with as they tend to rear their chicks without much bother. Chaffinch's have been mentioned in previous posts and if you get a pair house them on their own and
  5. Best of Luck with your greenies...

  6. I'd say your greenie's are not in full breeding condition. All natives need to be brought into breeding condition by feeding them various conditioning foods from about March onwards, Start with soaked/sprouted seed and then wild seed heads like Dandelion, Grounsel and chickweed when they come into season. At this stage of the breeding season Greenie's are normally on at least there second round of chicks. In an outdoor flight supply them with lots of cover like conifer and give them a variety of nest sites by placing wicker nest bowls in the cover. Nesting material is also an important factor,
  7. Salmon Fishing is already banned on a lot of Irish rivers by the Fisheries board in an attempt to increase Salmon numbers....
  8. Its now the middle of the breeding season so come Sept/Oct you should have no problem getting one. Check out the link below... http://www.nativebirds.co.uk
  9. Got this one from the same loch.My best ever 17ib 4oz.Will get the 20 pounder yet atb. Catcher This fish weighed in at 15lbs 12oz,
  10. It was great to see Trevor seargent avoiding answering questions and proving to the nation on Prime time TV that the greens definitely have a hidden agenda. Liam Cahill was very convincing and backed up all he said with real facts, I reckon the interviewer was no fan of Seargents probably as a result of Seargents attempt recently to pervert the course of justice.
  11. I would not mind ferreting Paris Hilton and see what bolts...
  12. Thanks for taking the time and effort to let us know....
  13. Five or six feet, once or twice but the norm is about 2/3ft for me, thankfully. A few times I lost the signal at eight feet, a matter of sitting and waiting.
  14. Caught these two perch at the same time one on a dry fly and the smaller one on a dropper whilst fly fishing for trout on a lake, must have cast into a passing shoal. The bigger one was close to 2 pound.
  15. I have one pair of reds, bought them up north last September if I breed a few you are welcome to them. Native birds their mules and hybrids is a good site as well http://www.nativebirds.co.uk/
  16. I try and breed a few siskins, greenies, goldies , redpolls every year and always have about eight pair of irish fancy's on the go as well. I bred white Irish fancy's last year and have three hens paired up to cock siskins this year to try and breed blue mules which I think are a lovely mule but not much use on the show bench. Greenie mules have become very popular on the bench so giving these a try as well but really should be using a norwich canary because the irish fancy is too small, this is my first year to concentrate on mules so fingers crossed.
  17. It was JB alright that bred the goldie/bullie. I dont own any of these birds I just took the photo's at various shows over the past year or two. Here are a few of mine.... Muling Pair Greenie Cock Pair of Greenies Pair of Siskins Trio of Goldies
  18. I wish, the goldie/bullie was bred by a lad from Carnew and the canary/bullie was bred by a man from london. The other mules were bred by a mate here in dublin. Yes I do a bit of showing but not mules or hybrids just straight natives mostly siskins and goldies.
  19. Here are a few.... Canary/Bullie Goldie/Bullie Goldie Mule Greenie Mule Linnet Mule
  20. Nice fish, its some length for 11lbs would have expected it to be a lot heavier. Lake was probably frozen for a month in January and it did not feed, wouldn't mind hooking into it at the end of the summer.
  21. As has been said move the table away from the fence and get some Niger seed and some peanuts to hang on the table. Wont be long until you see some goldfinches, siskins and redpolls....
