  1. Fair play to you for taking on the job of looking after the ferret you found. There are not many people that would do it so well done...
  2. Good photo's... Its a shame that those there before you left holes unfilled
  3. He looks like a really keen dog, he can only get better with time...
  4. I've enjoyed watching this video, thanks for the time & effort you put in making it...
  5. No all fresh ground this year, give chance for the others to build back up Its good to see you give previously worked ground a chance to recover...
  6. Slip lead your point about greenies is very valid they are the best foster parents for other species of natives by far in my opinion. Tel 1 you are not to far off the mark, bullie chicks have a big wide gape which is intimidating to canary hens and most native hens who have reared chicks previously but rearing bullies can work with unflighted hens who don't know the difference. Tong po I look forward to how things go. Fingers crossed for you.....
  7. Thanks for the mention Gnipper http://www.nativebirds.co.uk
  8. I've not been on the forum for a while and this sad news has really shocked me. In the past year or so I have had conversations by pm with Craigyboy about various topics related to breeding native birds and found him to be a true Gentleman and a wealth of knowledge. Although I'd never met him & knew nothing about his personal life I could tell he was a very genuine man whose years of experience as a bird man he shared with everyone who asked a question on the subject. I would like to take this opportunity to offer my condolences to his family & friends at this very sad and difficult t

  10. As Raw has already said go out with someone who can show you the ropes, use your ferrets and if they hunt well and good but if you are unsure about them run a proven hunting ferret through the warren after they have been through it to be sure....
  11. I agree with all the above posts so would just add one comment, fresh bath water every day is important because in my opinion its helps the birds moult quicker which is a stressful time for them and the quicker they moult out the better. Daily baths soften the new pin feathers which makes it easier for the birds to moult, they preen themselves a lot more after bathing so get though the moult quicker, a bird with no bath water will have dry brittle feathers trying to grow out which will take a lot longer than a bird with access to fresh bath water. Just my opinion.....
  12. You are looking for birds just a little early after the breeding season, in a month or two when the birds are through the moult and birdmen have sorted what they are keeping and what surplus stock they have you should have no problems soursing greenies & redpolls. Try the link below if you are not successful here on the hunting life..... http://www.nativebirds.co.uk
  13. I use it diluted 5 parts water 1 part Jeyes, never had a problem with it......
  14. Spot on advice Fireman.....
  15. The breeding season is coming to an end soon so wait until after the moult and you should have no problems buying young birds when people start moving their surplus stock...
  16. As soon as you see a feather on the cage floor start the colour feeding.....
  17. Sorry to read about your goldie mule, how did you get on with the hen canary did she rear her chicks? Were they Greenie mules or Goldie mules?
  18. I reckon goldies & siskins without doubt break eggs and wreck nests, they have a dubious reputation for it but so do chaffies, bullies and other species. In my experience there are a multitude of reasons why the cocks do this. Top of the list is that they are rank/ in tip top condition and break the eggs to drive the hen to nest again, secondly when the hen is sitting they become bored if that is the correct term to use and break up nests or break eggs. If mixed flights are overcrowded with too many pairs bickering can start over nest sites and this is another reason eggs end up smashed.
  19. If your new to natives try starting with greenies, siskins or redpolls they are less problematic than other species of native but having said that its an achievement to breed any native......
  20. If Dogger cant help you try the link below..... http://kentcages.com/Cages.htm
