A couple of things I've come across this week that have made me question what I thought I knew. First off that the father contributes more to the offspring than the mother. That is, a study on mice showed that although mother and father contribute an equal proportion of nuclear DNA to their offspring, the fathers genes were seen to dominate significantly in the expression of those genes. This has obvious potential implication on the breeding of working animals. Perhaps not so much in practice as in understanding. Secondly, that fish do indeed experience pain, or at lea

Hunting Rhino Poachers with Hounds in South Africa
Born Hunter replied to Born Hunter's topic in General Talk
Not me mate, @MH1 posted that. But sounds like I should give it a watch too. -
Another solution I thought of was a small surface to air missile with a purely kinetic warhead. It could be designed to deploy a parachute for a safe fall back to earth to minimise collateral. Also the small size would minimise risk to jets etc. Just enough to kill a drone. Only caveat is cost of a launch but perhaps that could be brought down with a largely reusable missile.

I know a chap in the raf regiment that was involved with the anti drone ops all over the country recently. Basically he said the tech is there but the biggest problem was legislation needed to change to allow them to use it. Wouldn't divulge further. Anyway, projectile weapons are last decade. Even in the battlefield they're using electronic weapons and countermeasures to take out drones. And as pesky has pointed out directed energy weapons are an obvious solution. PS I doubt a shotgun would have the range and would be spraying buck all over the airport.

I've never bought a newspaper for any other reason than to soak up pup piss. I'm probably a generation too late for buying papers. Everyday though I have a look at Reuters site, a defence site and the news feeds of my social media. These platforms really have superseded the broadsheet. I like reading the papers in other countries though.

Okay, so I want to start with an admission of the fact that I have next to f**k all first hand experience of HPRs. But what I have read about them over the years really interests me. Also, this is really just ground work for the future. I'm not buying one next week, more like in 5 years. In truth, for most of what I do spaniels suit me but I do a bit of all sorts and the versatility and pointing nature of the HPRs would certainly have a place in addition to a spaniel or two in my kennel. Our little DIY syndicate is more of a hybrid driven/walked-up shoot, than a tradition driven shoot, ie

In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean there is a small rocky 'Hell on Earth' called Ascension, that is a paradise for serious spearo's. It's there where this happened... Given the obvious size of his steel testicles, I'm amazed he doesn't sink like a f***ing brick!

I'm absolutely spitting!

That's not a f***ing camel! It's a splodge FFS.

I really can't stress how important I feel it is for us to turn East Asia into glass.

Hunting Rhino Poachers with Hounds in South Africa
Born Hunter replied to Born Hunter's topic in General Talk
Talking of guns, I've done a bit of research. Seems 90% of the poachers in the Kruger are using CZ bolt action rifles in either .375 or .416. These have been smuggled in as part of a huge organised crime operation specifically to equip poachers! Given these have a slow rate of fire, limited capacity, limited range and heavy recoil even in the best circumstance it's not the best defensive weapon against a pack of hounds. Purely speculation now but I'd imagine two or three couple of those hounds flying through the bush with intent to do harm gives next to f**k all opportunity to defend your -
Hunting Rhino Poachers with Hounds in South Africa

I suspect they're slipped on an active poaching event, rather than just loosed randomly everyday. Also this is in the bush, I doubt there should be anyone kicking around unless up to no good. Finally, it's Africa.... not health and safety mad Britain! LOL -
Yeah, they have a whole room full of whale stuff which is where the model is. It's a remarkable museum and free entry.

Couldn't agree more.

Not sure mate. The Blue whale will be new I'd think. Probably a Diplodocus when you went? I'd be very surprised if nothing had changed significantly in a decade.

The main entrance hall is an amazing place, with the Darwin statue and bust of the famous hunter Frederick Selous, the Mammoth skeleton etc. But most of all just the architecture. It's such a grand entrance. With the landings and the 360 degree 1st floor landing there are so many angles to view the blue whale. One day I'd like to attend a formal lecture and evening 'do' there. It's a grand place and I'd like to experience a truly grand event.

On here it only lists data for Viht N160 for 70gr .243win. Have you read N140 elsewhere or something?

Here’s an example. Currently it’s facial recognition, soon it’ll be behaviour recognition, they won’t even need to see your face! before long the sensors will step from being simply visible light and monitor a whole host of other signals. There’s some interesting work being done in to brain responses to different stimuli, essentially the early stages of mind reading.

Truth is, no one gives a shit about liberty anymore. No one believes in tyranny. I remember when it came out that security services were recording our data and everyone simply said “oh well it’s impossible for them to go through it all”. Frankly I was probably one of them! Ill say one thing and it should scare the piss out of everyone that understands it...... Machine Learning! It’s here now, it’s getting better, everyone is using it and it’ll make processing infinite amounts of data doable.

FAC interview do's & don'ts!!
Born Hunter replied to BenBhoy's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Fella, I believe we should have a constitutional right to bare arms, never mind CF on first application! You’re preaching to the choir. -
So have I. It was a joke mate.

A working pedigree for a start.

Bit reluctant to let this terrier go in unknown country with holes potentially about the place. I'd be quite happy firing him into a boar otherwise. Let's see how things develop...

Probably rules out my dog then. Don't suppose you'll be short of mad c**ts with knives, so I'll praps be of no use. Unless you want to bowhunt them....
