  1. good looking pup LDR, look forward to hearing of her preogress mate
  2. it aint looking good on starting an older dog with a distinct lack of retrieving drive my first bit of advice is try your best to make it all a game, play with him with a dummy, and just try to encourage him as best you can. if he's the sort that picks up anything and everything to greet you with when you walk in the door that'll make it alot easier, just make sure there's a dummy around. sorry to be the bearer of bad news mate
  3. i pick up my new dog in 6 days time ill post pics when i get him home
  4. thankyou for your input gary its appreciated. it suprises me that you say you'd sooner have an all russet gold kennel than grey. but obviously they are the breed that suits you best. and you seem to do very well with them! so would you say as for drive they're fairly similar? just rather the weimaraner for things that bite back?! Atb Matt
  5. here's the thing man, you clearly have no idea, if you dont like the breed dont post on the topic.
  6. are you in norway now stabs? i look forward to hearing about it when you get another
  7. shows clear research and good understanding... dimebar go check out the working terrier articles by richard christian on the home page.
  8. a couple of cracking dogs you had stabs, and i think you summed it up perfectly - they'll give you some fun in the field. do you have anything to do with staffs now stabs?
  9. my local gunsmith designed his own cartridges - "X Range" he called them, and he swears by his own 6 shot 28gram for pigeon on a 3/4 and 1/2 choke. works well
  10. thanks for your input bangabunny, sounds like you had a cracking shooting companion i had a bitch who was effectively killed by a dense vet. did you do much work on driven shoots with your dog? if so how did it get on compared to the other breeds in terms of how handleable he was at distance etc? cheers all
  11. I know theres a few on here who are very clued up on both these breeds so i thought id post my question to you guys. ive had experience with both breeds (training not working) and like most have always found vizsla's much softer, not necessarily easier to train but a stern word has always been adequate reprimand. I was wondering if this has ever reflected in other ways on the shooting field? i know many weimaraners will tackle game that bits back, and seem to have a deep hatred of foxes, how does this compare to the vizsla? are they any softer in the field? cheers all
  12. id try to get him to a vet asap, could be nothing major but for the sake of a trip out and a few quid its worth it.
  13. the dog im getting is 10/11 months. my bitch got bloat, was operated on but die overnight. still a sore spot/
  14. just thought id put up the only 2 pctures i have of my recently dead staffy bitch. she was 17 months old and coming on a treat, loads of drive and was really starting to use her head while hunting. i went down one morning a couple of weeks ago to feed her and let her out and noticed her belly was looking really bloated. my first thought was pyometra so i rushed her to the vets and they initially thought the same as she was showing all the symptoms, but an xray proved it was "bloat". they operated successfully and told me i could pick her up the next morning. 8.30 next morning i get a phone
  15. thanks kiwi. what name does she go by?
  16. mine was a bitch, she died last week picking up a dog in a couple of weeks though
  17. i work a staff (well, did and will again in a few weeks) and love them. not the best at anything in particular but they do for me.
  18. Just wondering as i cant remember, are the owners of mustwork kennels on this site? i've been eyeing their dogs up over the past few years, really handy looking dogs.
  19. She could only just see where she was going, but got it to us in the end. As you can see, she also retrieves Crows, I know many Gundogs that wont, dont know why? Something to do with smell i think....? Some dogs wont retrieve woodcock/snipe either. mine will retrieve woody and snipe but really dont like any type of corvid. terriers dont seem to have a problem with them though..
  20. ther's a few on here fella but id rather let them speak up if they want to
  21. always worth doing it, i never got round to doing it with my last bitch and ive got a £350 bill to lump for 12/13 quid - do it i say
