  1. spot on saxon! you're on a mission now pal Be carefull about trying to make him to the Hood now when he is coming on so well, its generaly good practice to Hood them as soon as they are taken up and make them to the Hood through the Manning and there after. You're now a good way into your Manning and basicly moving onto the trainning from the leash to the line, at the moment mate you don't want any set backs. this is only a personal point of view but someone who has never Hooded a bird before this could upset him slightly Perhaps you could try him when he is confident around you and
  2. You certainly have a point there with some PL , then again! some of these falconers who have based all there skills on flying imprints shouldn't have much of a problem these should all be pretty bomb proof by the penning stage.

    hoods

Had many a arguement in the past about Hooding Birds . some of the people who can't recognise the advantage of a Hood and question the benefits certainly show their inexperience. Falcons still seem to be the birds people generaly Hood but why stop there? why not Hood a Gos too or any other Hawk? OK they can be difficult at first but they settle and soon condition themselves to it with a good fitting hood and sensible Hooding, cramming them on their heads like I have seen in the past is a definite No No and a certain way to make the bird loath your aproach. I much prefer the Dutch type whe
  4. Classic . never had such like since I was a teen, mind you back then I would have took all four of them on
  5. cheers all for the replies . would you say that the sloes and most things are earley this year? in the past we've left it until at least October or later but they seem pretty ripe already although still hard. when they're ripe do they soften up? they won't be nicking my sloes they're in the garden
  6. Very nice quality AT I liked the look of these when a guy picked a Peregrine up, I said then I'm pretty tempted. I can't PM you with any details as you're not receiving pm's for some reason. Jasp
  7. Very nice Rickardo! definitely one of my favourite Hybrids . their arseyness and attitude is what gets my juices flowing, I remember the first one I had used to bit lumps out of me when first taken up and sit and hack at me when the Hood was first removed, it would even rumble on moaning while feeding on the fist, on a few occasions it would bate directly at me not away from me like most P/R birds, the other two was also very simular. Puting that aside they're a stunning versitile bird with aggresion with a capital A, a cracking Hybrid... here's a few pictures of one of my snotty bitc
  8. I don't think weight is a major issue when we're only talking a few ounces between same sex birds Nicky! if the birds at its peak flying condition its surpriseing what they will take on. a good fit in condition experienced Hawk is alot more confident around larger quarry, having said that a young inexperienced bird will take some large quarry on and hopefully learn from its mistakes. I know of a female taking a Canadian goose and also of a few taking some good size brown hares on their day, also heard of a few taking a dislike to dogs and attaching themselves to them . Jasp

    falconry

:clapper: Bang on the money. Its a shame as many discarded HH's are put on the market after their first year if not sooner, they never get to reach their full potential. many are treated as a stepping stone far too soon, How a so called new falconer is supposed to learn Falconry handling skills by flying a bird for one year and moving onto somthing else is beyond me.....
  10. I met my missus when was driving past weight watchers just as she came out of the door eating jam dougnuts, took her out later that evening for a Kentucky bucket before smashing her back doors in in the back of the Ford Capri, this was 1989 and been with her ever since. Just kidding lads! she was a nice petite size 10 back then, met her in a nightclub in 89 and been together ever since. although the bit about the Capri and smashing her back doors in was pretty accurate
  11. Probably a bit biased but I reckon Man U will run away with it this year, I can't see it being as close as last season with all the quality young talent Man U will be blooding this year aswel as the experienced players. TOM CLEVERLEY = Now there's a lad to watch
  12. is it still too soon to pick sloes? it seems most things are earley this year with these sloes looking pretty ripe but I would hate to pick them before they are ready. also noticed there seems to be far more fruit on the trees compared to the last few years, even the Oaks are full of acorns and the blackberry bushes are heaving with fruit... 14. I used to love a drink mainly spirits but boy does it make me feel rough these days. I got brought a bottle of Glayva the other week and had a couple of small shots the other evening, within a hour I felt ill! not half cut but genuinly ill, been feeling like this now for a while after going on the spirits...

    jokes

A group of primary school infants, accompanied by two female teachers, went on a field trip to Cheltenham races to see and learn about thoroughbred horses. When it was time to take the children to the toilet, it was decided that the girls would go with one teacher and the boys would go with the other. The teacher looking after the boys was waiting outside the men's toilet when one of the boys came out and told her that none of them could reach the urinal. Having no choice, she went inside, helped the boys with their underpants, and began

    Hares

Eskdalehawks summed it up perfect . You could also come down a calibre from a Eagle to perhaps a female Redtail, It should knock the Hares over for you at quarter of the cost. even the best of birds can make mistakes and end up with their crops torn or worse with a kick from a Hare, I value the birds I fly too much and avoid a confrontation with a Hare if possible. then again a bird thats mastered a technique will roll them over like a true pro. liike they say "Its the fight in the dog" that counts, some quite small German female Goshawks across the continent flying average female Harr
  17. Off subject slightly, Did anyone see the Documentary on telly last night showing the policing of a EDL march? some of the police methods was pretty heavy handed in this situation when it wasn't needed. you couldn't compare this march in the same speech as the riots we just witnessed in the last few days yet.
  18. spot on Saxon! he's getting more and more confident around you, you could now try and get him on somthing to prolong his meal to keep him occupied on the fist while you walking him round manning to different things, don't over face him at first! if he shows a dislike to somthing by bateing away then move away and try him when he is settled again from a bigger distance. you want to reinforce that bird into thinking the fist is pride of place above everything else, making the fist a happy place IE: with food helps to acheive this.... 19. let me know if any for sale i like reading during the moult am trying to get a bit of a colection 100% will do mate , I have a fair few pictures/prints too from andrew ellis and Ron digby! I'm also thinking of moving most of them on too. I'm getting to the stage now mate where I'm sick of bird looking at me on the living room walls aswel as in the garden
  20. I think we should start another thread on Hoods! trust me I'm a huge advocate of Hoods and don't basically know any other way when taking up any bird unless it was a Impring spar in the past, I struggle to get hood I like these days, I favoured the old Mollen type and favour the Dutch type for Gos's as apposed to the anglo! the worst thing a Gos can do is remove its hood expecially when being made to the Hood and I find the anglo is a pain in the arse for this. the Dutch fits the bill perfect and halds onto the back of the nape perfect before the braces are pulled. I'm sure you know what I
  21. I'm not a good reader these days Mick but it sounds the perfect books for the lad to pick up and read mate, do you know I used to love to sit and read a book and if it was good I would read it again so I remembered the most beneficial bits. these days I just can't sit and relax with a good book. I moved here a couple of years back and all my Falconry books went into a couple of Cardboard boxes, they still sit there today apart from one I loaned out the other week "North American Falconry And Hunting Hawks - Beebe and Webster". I'm now seriously thinking of fireing them all on Ebay includ
  22. Good post x38! thankfully only had a few problems with (Trichomoniasis) in my hawks which was treat useing Flagyl, I think it was mainly down to woodes shitting in the tops of the aviaries. I know a couple of lads who's bird ended up with Coccidiosis but thankfully I havn't had to tackle this one yet... Jasp

    Woodga.

Happy birthday woodga A genuine top man....
  24. I wasn't being funny about it mate just a simple question as to why they are needed when a perfectly good job can be made on a bow I know this much when I take a bird up out of the aviary and fits its equipment Hooded you won't get it to stand on the bow unless you're very lucky, as you probably know most play dead and lay or stand by the bow propped up by their wings, what I was sayng is sticking a bird like this on a Post would be pretty fool hardy for anyone, I'm still also old school and beleive any shortwing should be perches and not blocked on a post. you don't see many wild Goshawks s
  25. Nice one pal its much apreciated . its probably a good idea to look on the IBR Furgle for birds advertised in the Essex area. having said that you not all that far from my neck of the woods but it won;t be until next year now mate, I only let her run one clutch off these days due to her age! she managed 3 out of 4 this year.
