  1. Worked with a lad who'd bring buttered bread to work and buy a packet of Monster Munch and have a Monster Munch sandwich for his lunch.
  2. I thought the idea, back in the day, of entering terriers was to account for the fox in the Lakes ? If he bolted so be it.
  3. And this thread is a classic example of the jealousy in the game.Everyones talking about the cowboys within and no ones mentioned that some of the best work their terriers for packs, amateur or professional. Believe me, a terrierman for a good mounted pack HAS to be a better terrierman than one for any of the footpacks. There's no better feeling than bolting one, under pressure, in the direction wanted and hounds still screaming an hour later on him because your bolting and last nights or this mornings hard work has paid off and a shake of the hand, a thank you and a pint or two bought for y
  4. Beauties, and it looks like there's nothing wrong with their eyesight. They've spotted something in the distance.

  6. What if said dog is everything that you want in a dog but dies in the line of duty before you have chance to breed off it We all know dogs who this has happened to, and we all know good dog men that have bred them a lot earlier than that Then you breed of his brother if he's good enough to breed from. IMO one good worker from a litter is not a good reason to breed from him. His siblings should have a high percentage of workers too. A dog or bitch being well bred is NOT enough to breed from them, they have to be good workers too.
  7. Not exactly a poem and we've all heard it before but it shouldn't be left out of this thread.
  8. LOL, no, IMO it proved that the one that stands back nice and steady, see his chance and takes it will usually do a better job than the one who can't make up his mind as to what style he has. The ones that rush in crazily against a hard quarry will usually come of worse than the one who makes a battle go they way HE wants it to.
  9. Well it proved that a good black one will usually get the job done when a good white one fails !!!!!
  10. And folk wonder why there's so many don't make the grade !
  11. I recently had a loan of some Grit And Steel and some The Feathered Warrior magazines from the 1940s and the classified adds was a look back at a completely different era. There was adds for Trios for sale or will swap for guns, there was adds for guns and adds for Pit Bull Terriers from the best fighting stock in the world. I also seen an add for a convention that Earl Tudor ran in the US of A in the 40s (I think) and at the bottom it said "Entry $1, Women 50c Children 50c and Coloreds 50c.
  12. RHFD and HJKC was the old way of advertising your all rounder. Nowadays all you have to do to advertise a working lurcher so the police etc. haven't a clue what your on about is put in the add, will take teeth, likes bambi, day time on long ears, took them pre ban (which makes your dog ancient) and no one has a clue, LOL.
  13. His terriers were often referred to as Fox Terriers types but then again leggy white working terriers were often referred to as such up to 30 or 40 years ago in some places. I just mentioned that John Gaunt, aka John Weldon aka The Sawmills Ratcatcher's terriers were of the working Fox Terrier type of the era. Incidentally he said the foxes were better ratters as they'd catch a rat with 2 or 3 dead rats already in their mouths. I have a funny feeling that the terrier in Stop Ends photo and Mr Gaunts terriers have only one thing in common, they're white.
  14. Before you squashed him did you make him spit out what he'd swallowed ?
  15. Len, you mentioning the Buy And Sell reminds me of during the early 90s a friend of mine's phone was hopping one day with lads asking him was he still looking for live foxes and badgers. He bought the Buy And Sell and here was an add looking for live foxes and badger with his phone number, and him with a yard of working dogs. He told some of the callers he was from the ISPCA and they'd hang up. A week later he started getting calls asking was the tortoise still for sale ? LOL. It was a drinking buddy of his sending in the free add every week and in the end he had to ring Buy And Sell and t
  16. That exact same TYPE is still kept in Ireland to this day 2017.. same size looks and coat. John Gaunt, or as he was also known John Weldon, the saw mills rat catcher was said to keep a fox terrier type. Would the terrier in your pic be a fox terrier type ?
  17. The Kerry Blue one jumped out at me too, to be fair the Kerry Blue of 30 years ago was a fiery breed, maybe not game but liked a tussle and I remember bringing a Jack Russell of mine 3 different times to the vet because of a neighbours Kerry Blue. Another one I liked was the Jack Russell pups for sale "time wasters beware". And also the one looking for Rhino Horn, nowadays your door would be kicked in within the hour, LOL Nice one, keep them coming.
  18. To me fighting is toe to toe and not two men rolling around on the floor. I think Conor will have trouble sticking to the Marquis of Queensbury rules but I do think he'll have several pounds on Floyd come match time and with youth on his side something tells me he has a great chance. But as a boxing fan I wont be sorry if Floyd does the job.
  19. That was the old way around here years ago. 2 pigs reared and one for the house ,the other sold and hopefully covering the cost of rearing the two. Loads of folk had pigs then. Rare to see them now.
  20. Just out of interest , how much does a call out from the Fire Brigade cost ? Britain and Ireland ? I know it will be a lot more expensive than a years sub or a donation to the FMWTC.
  21. Never touch them as I've never seen them to be a problem and IMO they're there for a reason. What's the word used to describe them? Adipose ? I don't believe it, I think nature has them there for something.
  22. What a lucky terrier ! With no locator on it it was lucky the owner just happened to be standing in the right place at the right time.
  23. Yes, you could have worded your original post differently and left the word "famous" out. And I agree, you boys over there haven't got all the peddlers and sad to say some of you's even get robbed by peddlers from our country. Sad to say but some of the biggest thieves in this game are not just dog thieves but those who send pups over to you's and the Brits that are not bred the way they say they are and from known curs too, for good ££££ or $$$$$$$$$$. An embarrassment on good Irish dog men IMO but thankfully they're now known as jokes. And I agree too that if I had to start all over again
