  1. Look - dont get hung up about your bullet heads being close to the lands at 10 thou off - alot of reloaders will tell you that's where you should be. I say rubbish - unless you have a match barrel. Most reloaders who have bog standard rifles never get to realize the potential of their rifle because they are fixated on this 10 - 20 thou business off the lands. My bog standard Remmy 22.250 will group sub .2 and my 22.250 in R93 will group .17 - where are they seated? - 137 and 132 thou off the lands. My 6.5 easily sub .25 is seated 222 thou back - three of my friends 6.5's range from 180 down to
  2. I was under the impression that it's not as simple as all that to move deer. The deer do not take well to the tranquiliser's and do not take well to the transport, with a high mortality rate. Might be wrong but would be very interested in any information you might get. John See:- http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/ourwork/r...onforms.aspx#14
  3. I have reloaded thousands of rounds both for myself and four other rifle users. I have NEVER lubed the inside of the neck - whoever told you to do that? Once you have fired formed your cases, technically you should be then neck sizing only - no lube needed anywhere. Before you put the cases through your die get a stiff nylon brush and run it through the neck a few times to remove any burnt powder. Looking at your weights of powder, what is your COL or OAL? Assuming you are using a 243, you can probably tighten your groups by playing about with COL or OAL.
  4. Excuse my ignorance, but thumbhole shaft? Do you mean thumbhole Stock?
  5. I have a 17 Rem. Mine (a Tikka) shoots very well with both 25gr Amax and 20gr Vmax If you are looking at a 17 rem and plan to reload (the only way to get the best out of them) it would help if you are quite an experienced reloader. Bear this in mind, despite a m/v of around 4200 fps it is very much affected by quite minor crosswinds My advice actually would be to look at a 204 - mainly because it will take much heavier bullets, but this calibre once again can be a PITA to reload successfully. Best bet - one of the .22 c/fs
  6. Hm..... About £8 a box reloaded? Mine in 6.5 work out at £13.40 per box reloaded - so what components do you use to bring it down to around £8 ?
  7. Oh boy Deker you used to be pretty cool on this forum - perhaps ......ah well leave it at that I never said the 243 was not up to the job - my reference was to meat damage - please dont skip read what I wrote. If the 243 out sells the 6.5 it may well be to do with the fact that it is most peoples first choice for a deer calibre - but you would be surprised how many people when they really get into stalking and see the damage the 243 can do who switch to the 6.5 and 308 - that could be why there are so many 243 available - as you said 'my opinion' The more I read some posts from t
  8. Do me a favour please mate? Don't misquote me? Yes apologise - meant Snap Shot although the rest did actually apply to you and others who have to take head shots as a fait a comple.
  9. Shotgun, not that I wish to come in at the last minute and try and change your mind. But you have read on this thread about people like Mr Logic who use 243 and go onto say that they are competent at taking neck shots at deer and even brag about shooting a 17 pointer at 200 yards neck shot - whats a 17 pointer got to do with it? Lets face it if it were legal your 22.250 would floor the beast. I regularly use my 22.250 on farmed red deer and a 17 pointer would be considered a midget. The problem with the 243 using the heavier bullets (95 gr upwards) is that many 243 will not stabilize them
  10. No you can not. John Perhaps John meant to add 'that is UK deer legal'?
  11. I am well aware of that and I made my feelings known in a post on an earlier page. However as Dicehorn brought up the subject of the "farmers defense" and asked Deker to point out where in the deer act he was permitted to take deer out of season. I felt that in the interests of fairness I should point out what the law actually states which is somewhat different to "Dicehorn's law". Because if and I stress if Deker was truly dealing with some marauding deer then in my book he has done nothing wrong other than to be a bit little bit silly in posting pictures and advertising the fact.
  12. Deker, I have no wish to give my views - just a couple of observations......I have tried to stay away from this one in the hope you may let it fade away if you don't like it, but it seems some just want to look like luvvies......Your views are pretty transparent, YOU ASKED so DON'T blame me if you don't like the answers !!!!!!! I was unaware that the six species of deer in the UK are able to be termed 'Vermin' - they are clearly not. In some police areas even the fox is not categorized as vermin. I am a Game and Vermin Controller not a pest controller, I don't shoot bed bugs... so deer in
  13. Deker, I have no wish to give my views - just a couple of observations I was unaware that the six species of deer in the UK are able to be termed 'Vermin' - they are clearly not. In some police areas even the fox is not categorized as vermin. Can you quote me the part of the 2007 deer amendment that gives you the right to take deer out of season - I hope you are not going to quote 'Farmer's defence' . Are you aware that even Natural England will not grant a licence to shoot deer out of season to protect property (crops etc)? Finally as a professional I just query why you feel it ne
  14. Think you will find Jamie on a heart/lung shot on a fox - if you were to skin the fox you would get some idea of tissue damage(meat that is reduced to jelly) Its because we dont open up foxes we do not appreciate what the A Max will do in our 22.250s
  15. Not suggesting for one moment that what you have described is not anything to do with a big cat. But there is a growing trend within the lurcher brigade to get pit into their dogs and perhaps we can guess why this is becoming a requirement. The classic signs of a cat attack are usually severe claw marks down the sides of the victim - dogs do not have that type of claw and therefore rely on their jaws to tear flesh. A cat uses its jaws to suffocate and my feeling is that had it been a cat it would have certainly disemboweled the tup and not caused the damage you have seen to the tup's neck.
  16. Yes, I expect the Nikon you looked through did not have the light - you were probably offered the old stock. Agree that the leica are better optically, but hey I use mine for distance not in place of my Swaro binos
  17. I recently bought the Nikon 800 having used a Bushnell for about 5 years. My Nikon is the iluminated one. My bushnell was a pain to carry around when stalking because of its size - must say the Nikon is ideal. Most of my deer/fox are out to around 350 yds, so technically I see no reason to buy a machine that will take me out to 1200 yds. Thanks to the back light I can easily ping off trees/buildings etc at night with no problem when foxing. You said 'slighly bulky' Nikkon 800 weighs 210 grms Leica 800 weighs 220 grms Nikon 800 is 126mm x 72mm Leica is 113mm x 75mm Paid £
  18. Do a bit of research before you knock at the door. Has the farm got what you are after - rabbits, pigeons etc. Try and walk a footpath so you can judge whether it is worth approaching the farmer in the first instance. Dont trespass
  19. Not had one but the T8 Reflexes have not had a wonderful press as many have rusted out due to their construction materials I do have however own two Wildcat P8 s (one on my 6.5) they do not corrode and perhaps more importantly they are easily strippable to clean. New they are around the £200 mark http://www.wildcatrifles.co.uk/sound_moderators.htm One bit of advice I will give is, whichever one you finally get, make sure at the end of shooting the mod is removed from your rifle. The heat in the mod will cool and cause condensation which if left on the end of your barrel will get i
  20. Yes, as Snap says could be your cases - easily proved - just weigh a nickel against one of your Federal If nickel were that good, every one would be using it.
  21. I think you will find with this cooler weather coming through the UK you will start to see them and with rain about, they will move around more remarking their territories. FD you have no deep cover, but have you crops such as wheat/barley and maize? I was watching a young 4 pointer last week on the side of a field and he walked some 20 yds out into some maturing barley, lay down and I found it almost impossible to relocate him after moving the binos away and back to him I have also been out with N/V twice in the last three days looking for fox and have seen more bucks with this unsettled
  22. I take my time reloading but I can still reload 20 cases by the time you have watched one episode of Casualty
  23. There all roe cant you tell??? Dont hold your breath, but we may get some one asking if they are all bucks
  24. i have known several disintergrate while being used on a centre fire rifle , they seem more trouble than what they are worth and you still have the sonic boom anyway ,no doubt someone will have a different oppinion ,for stalking you only usually get one shot so i do not bother about the noise factor . i think they are a pile of shite on a big rifle Not sure how much stalking you have done with the "for stalking you only usually get one shot " I have emptied my magazine several times when hind culling and many times a couple of does. I also cull farm deer where a mod is essential.
  25. If they knock against the stock - then probably your gun mount and facial position is wrong. The answer to the Olympic question is none - now you know. lol
