    The maximum has a lot to do with litigation american style. Also these maximums have to cover the guy with a modern sporting rifle and also the guy with a rifle built in 1895 of the same calibre. At the end of the day it is all about common sense and sensible experimentataion. It is worth remembering that most of the most accurate loads are acheived by using loads well below the manufacturer's maximum.     As you will be accompanyed by a professional stalker, I am sure he will make the right decisions as regards your safety. Apart from what you have mentioned, I would suggest a thick scarf or balaclava. If you can get some of those disposable handwarmers that last about 6 hours they can keep the numbness away from your trigger finger etc. Wellie boots have their limitations (snow can get into them) so use boots with gaiters. Finally put some bars of chocolate in your coat - its surprising how tiring climbing about the hills can be. Peter

    One of my 22.250 s is a SPS 700 tactical. It has been somewhat doctored insomuch that the fluted stainless barrel is original - has a different Remington stock, jewell trigger and bedded onto aluminium. Not got a mod for it. But with home loads this will group .20 @ 100 and 3/4 at 500. I must say that perhaps I have been lucky with this barrel for a massed produced item. Based on my experience and also an owner ot 2 Blasers and a Tikka, I would say the Rem 700 is fine. Peter

    Get yourself onto U-Tube and put something like 'deer butchery' in and you will see many very good films saves the bother of swapping - all you need is on U-Tube. Having said that, nothing beats someone in the know standing over you whilst you do the job. Peter

    As for now the flat being kindda older modern, has got attic where the concrete bricks can be useful for securing the safe to the wall in there. Dont know about your personal circumstances, but I am assuming your flat is rented, in which case you will have to ask permission from your landlord to store guns in the flat and also the location.     My guess it would be the shooter, however it is worth remembering that in extreme cold conditions your fps will increase in cold weather and effect your POI - having said that, not really much at 100 yds.

    Yup.....should have spotted that also - however, in this neck of the woods we have a lot of places where the grass is still lush!! It was just me jumping the gun and getting all paranoid about out of season deer - hate for a newbie on the forum to think now is the time for roe bucks. I have enough problems with long dog boys around here taking anything they can catch

    As foxhunter states the buttolo is the no 1 for roe usually costing around the £18 mark. It is only used during the rut and if sqeezed quietly can bring out a doe thinking it is her fawn that is calling and if the buck is about he will also appear to shadow the doe. I have never heard of a winter caller for does, I think the reason being they would never respond to any sort of call. My advice would be to put a mineral lick in a clearing in your wood where you are seeing a fair bit of traffic - has worked for me on roe and reds. Peter

    Not quite sure what the flattest, fastest bullet possible has to do with deer shooting - its all about kenetic energy. A .416 Rigby using a 400 grain head is a slow loopy bullet with a mv of around 2300 fps but it certainly will ruin a cape buffolo's day. Question is with the flat, fast 243 using a 75 gr head travelling at 3200 fps what will it do to a buffalo ?     Personally I dont think there is an awful lot between most mods. My pal has a Jet Z on his 6.5 and is well pleased with it - my .17 Rem has a P8 and I am well pleased with it. 2 other rifles of mine have PES mods and I am well pleased with them although I do think they are on the heavy side - had them about 8 years before all the latest ones came on the scene.

    J, before you buy have a look through a pair of 8.5 x 42 ELs in Swarovski and if poss a couple of others at the same time. I have had my Swarovski's for 12 years (you need the best for stalking) and yes I have looked through many others and have always said hm ...nice binos to be polite. Yes they are expensive, however if you look after them, whether you are 25 or 55 they will see you to the end of your shooting hobby. To be able at distance to pick out (with clarity) the tips of a buck's antlers in a wooded area is worth putting your hand deep into your pocket. Peter

    I don't think he 'can get done' but I have heard of FAC holders being quizzed by their FEO as to whether in view of the little amount of ammo purchased they still have a need for the particular rifle.

    Firstly. I don't have a 243 but prefer and have a 6.5 in R93. However from my reading of the 243 it is quite apparent that because of the calibre's twist rate, bullets over 90 gr weight can cause accuracy loss. My advice before giving up on it is to try some bullets in the 70 to 78 grn bracket Riohogs posts make sense

    I was a little surprised John that the list did not include the odd rat especially at that time of the year when rats are active with cereals. I know we give the fox a bad press but in reality he hoovers up many rats in a year. Although I keep chicken and have lost dozens to the fox over the last 10 years or so, I must say that I regularly see a vixen (I think its a vixen) in my paddock with night vision (me not the fox!!) and see her catch rats coming out of a wood pile.
