  1. There seems to be a bit of confusion with the advice given Granted, Granny can wander into a gunshop and buy a 1000 FMJ or even have them posted without an FAC. However expanding ammo is different. It all depends in which police area you live in. In my area (Devon & Cornwall) the gunshops HAVE to record on your FAC that you have purchased say 100 55g Vmax heads. This goes for many other police areas - gunshops in other police areas will sell the 100 heads simply on production of your FAC Seems the OP is in a police area the same as mine. I personally do not have a problem wit
  2. Yes thats righ FD Natuaral England. I am about to apply to them as last year on the estate I manage (6000+ acres) one tenant farmer had all his barley ears nipped off by red deer in the space of ten days by >150 reds - he has just sown maize in this same 15 acre field and will face the same problem no doubt in June/July. Although I am applying it is my intention to shoot last years followers and prickets, shooting hinds with young calves does not sit well with me. Going back to the OP, it was always my belief that if deer were shot out of season then game dealers could not accept th
  3. For them that followed this thread and need a pair Maplins have them half price under a tenner http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criter...s&source=15
  4. Of all the info given you, this is perhaps the best. Apart from whether to tumble 1st then case prep or the other way round, there is a set sequence to the making of a bullet. If you have the ABC of reloading (Good book) read it through then read it again so that you understand the principles involved - you are an important person in the shooting world - the rest of us want you to be safe. Do you know your rifles twist rate? Some 243 s have a slow twist rate like 1:12 or 1:13 and getting the heavier bullet weight to shoot well can sometimes be impossible as heavy bullet heads suit the
  5. Myself and friend have these three Germans over every year at the beginning of April, they will not come over if there is a full moon and insist that they are the first to stalk with us. I must say though, they do know their bucks and only insist on the very best. Last month I stalked around with the senior of the group, in total we saw 8 bucks - none appealed to him as they had to be silver or better. At the end of their stay (5 days) they had shot 7 bucks only one was silver, and one bronze. The beautiful gold head was (thankfully) smart enough to keep his head down. Yes the continen
  6. Yes the buck is from an area that produces good heads but a buck with 8" single spikes is not really a buck I want to keep. Not when there are plenty of other bucks in this area producing good 6 point heads in their first year. Cheers, Mark. Thats interesting never knew they could go from a fawn to a 6 spiker in one year - with all my years of roe stalking one can always learn new things about roe deer
  7. Looking at the picture in your signature, and assuming both deer from the same area, could it not be that this young fella still in velvet and 8" may be the buck of the future when he grows up?? Peter
  8. Large Rifle primers. I am experimenting with Federal 210M and CCI primers. What is the twist rate in your rifle? Asking because many people with a twist rate 12 and over have difficulty in getting heavy bullets to shoot through such a slow twist rate as 12:1 and 13:1 In my experience slow twist rifles favour the lighter bullet heads. If your twist rate is something like 10:1 then you should have no problem with the 107 gr heads H414 is a popular powder for the .243 Peter
  9. A rough idea of what I should be goiung for from Reloadersnest web page
  10. Yes I too would be interested in the outcome with these. I am reloading some Nosler 95g BT for a friend's 243 which will be for roe - what appeals to me is that FPS will be around 2850 so (hopefully) it should leave some meat on the bone. Anyway he will be over at the weekend to try the different combinations I have made up. Peter DiceHorn interested in your reloading of the 95gr BTs What powder you using for them . I am trying to find a load using H414 without joy . Hello Paul Yes I am experimenting with H414 starting at 40g and moving towards 42g. At present using
  11. Been there done it - Started with a bolt .22 (BRNO) super little gun very accurate, then thought I would like a change to a semi (10/22) constantly jammed, always had to keep sliding the bolt back to check it had cycled. Within 3 months started to really hate it so part exchanged it for an Anchutz bolt action - very happy with it. From what I know many people who buy the dreaded 10/22 s just about replace every nut and bolt on it to get them to shoot well and generally at an eye watering cost to them - still a 10/22 at the end of the day. just my 2p worth

  13. Local Just to give you some idea what the homeloads I use are capable of in my standard 6.5 http://i438.photobucket.com/albums/qq101/w...hpqscan0001.jpg During the course of my stalking I always make a point of taking out any foxes I see as I read somewhere that in some areas in the UK foxes are responsible for roe fawns death as high as 60%. My 120 BT will make big holes in them - this is due to the fox being very narrow in size. Peter
  14. Have been reloading the 6.5 x 55 for more than 10 years - shoot numerous red and roe each year I use the Nosler 120g BT using N160 having tried many bullet heads and powders To give you some idea of exit wound on a roe, the following was at about 140 yds - exit just over an inch http://i438.photobucket.com/albums/qq101/wyndog/DSCF0292.jpg I have a friend who uses Hornaday 129 SST and they also would get my vote To be quite honest you should consider bullets around 120g onwards as this gives a starting M/V of about 2700 - if you go lighter with the 6.5 your rifle ends up wit
  15. I have permission on an estate with a wood next to the old house. The deer lawn was made (as usual) by clearing out the trees in an area in the middle of the wood and sowing grass - hence deer lawn!! On another property I manage deer the previous owners in the 30's landscaped a bowling green in a wood complete with hut which is still standing - nowadays it is mainly grass with a few brambles and looks like a deer lawn. Many owners did not shoot the deer but just liked to have and see deer - status symbol - bit like a scaled down version of Woburn.
  16. I only use lube (RCBS Case lube 2) when I full length size, then pop them in the tumbler for 1/2 hour to clean off the lube. Never bother with lube when neck sizing.
  17. Cheers Tommy wedding fund doesn't stretch to taxidermy Ah - Stuff the wedding
  18. It would appear that you are going down the road of a semi Auto (excuse my finger at the back of my throat) As someone has pointed out they are not too popular as far as organisers of clay shoots are concerned - it does beg the question if the semi was that good why dont the top rate clay shooters use them? On another minor matter - who knows after downing numerous pigeons and crows your prowess may get to the ears of a pheasant syndicate who invite you over to down a few birds - you will have to borrow a shotgun for the day and probably shoot crap as a result - take the shortcut and s
  19. Well, as you said, you had the presence of mind to stay calm enough to take the second shot. You are also honest enough to admit on a public forum the mistake you made - anyone who manages deer has or will make a bad shot - if they have not or think it will never happen to them they are in cuckoo land - its happened to me Shooting off sticks can have risk variables especially when you are attempting to keep your adrenaline in check - it does take a little longer to get on the target and there may be the posibility of the worry that the perfect broadside shot may only be available for a
  20. Your H380 is a good powder - used it myself until I found N150 for the 55gr V Max I dont know how serious you are at home loading - do you use a comparitor for your bullet ogive measurements, do you neck turn, do you weigh your empty new cases to get roughly the same weight, do you weigh your bullets and batch them to the exact weight?? Choice of primers? Do you know the exact headspace of the cases? All the above help in getting the rifle to shoot better groups. I have two 22.250 - bog standard rifles (Rem700 & Blaser) I know most reloaders will tell you to seat the bullet hea
  21. I attach three photos of my set up. This started out as a rough idea of what I wanted and I found it that comfortable, it became the finished article. This rest is for the passenger side, as if my mate is with me he will shoot and if I am on my own that is where I will shoot as it is more comfortable for a right hand shot. I do have one for the driver's side but that is rarely used' First piccy shows it on my bonnet http://i438.photobucket.com/albums/qq101/wyndog/DSCF0323.jpg This one shows it in place from inside the truck http://i438.photobucket.com/albums/qq101/w
  22. Are you thinking drivers or passenger window? What vehicle is it for?
  23. For lamping i will use about 8x usually. N/V will be - it depends. It depends what sort of N/V you have. The more you turn up the mag the less clearer the image is at distance. On mine which attaches to the eye piece of my scope (unavailable in the UK) it is still clear at 200 yds on 7x but for best results out to 300 yds I turn it down to 5.5x Hi dicehorn, What NV are you using to see to 300yds? ATL Hi ATL Been asked this a few times! No maker's name on it - had to wait 3 years for one - had to fly out of this country to get it. Actually, under stars it is
  24. I reckon with regard to the photo of you with the roe, it does not appear very bright (for an experienced stalker) to have your rifle pointing at yourself - loaded or otherwise - but then what do I know as a possible pretender
