  1. [My wife bought me as a present a red deer stalk with him - I actually did not even see a deer which was just really bad luck and nothing to do with him - deer are not on tap. Pat is a true knowlegable countryman and good company, but please bear in mind he is sponsered by various manufacturers so his advice on equipement maybe somewhat biased.
  2. Personally, there is nothing wrong with the Remmingtons (I have a 700 Tactical in 22.250 but much modified). Having said that all rifles are a bit like cars - two people can buy a Ford Focus, one has no problems the other nothing but problems. Given the choice in your situation I would look more seriously at the Sako - generally a better build. Why on earth are you changing from 6.5 to 270? The 6.5 is only about 1.5" lower at 200 yards and a much sweeter calibre to shoot. I tried the 270 then the 6.5 - still with the 6.5
  3. personaly i'd not be happy with 1" group in the .204, it should be grouping nearly 1/4 inch with a good load... Also the .204 is a fast flat round and the bore snake will not cut the mustard, and excessive use will mess up your barrel, get yourself a good dewy rod and a bore guide, some kg products, or similar, hoppes no 9 is good, also.. do not keep the forrest bore foam in too long as it contains ammonia, and could damage your barrel if left in for prolonged periods..... you need a good cleaning routine otherwise you'll see your accuracy really go downhill... reloader 10
  4. Hi Sam I give below the following recipe for the 40gr head using H322. Please bear in mind that the powder rate is NOT a hot load as my friend wanted accuracy over fps. Bullet 40 gr Vmax Powder H322 @ 25.3 gr (this gives 3910 fps through his Ruger) Cases - Winchester Primers Federal 205 (whatever you use will make little difference) Cartridge case to be trimmed to 1.850 This bit is crucial - the COL (cartridge overall length) measures 2.282 and that in turn gives an ogive measurement of 1.903 I would further add and I hope you do not think I am being too anal
  5. ring them and ask them thats your best bet. noe one can tell you what you want to hear aprt from your flo Yup Jamie is right there. The hub of it all is that some police areas regard a fox as vermin and some have it written down as "fox AND vermin". Unless you ask your FLO you will be unsure what side of the law you are on.
  6. Hi Sam Yes I know your area - I live just below the south side of the Blackdown Hills This guy is at Chawleigh - keeps a fair bit for the reloader and is the type of chap that if is does not have it in stock will get it for you AND phone you when its in. If you plan to shoot 40 gr heads , do consider H322 Peter
  7. See you must be near me - I'm 10 mile from Taunton Have you tried Simpsons? If not pm me and I will give you their tel number. Just as a matter of interest the guy I mentioned above has recently changed from 10x as he had the same problem as you - anyway he has now developed a load for the 40 gr Vmax using H322 and according to him (and he never exaggerates) he is producing one hole groups at 100 with this powder
  8. As a general rule of thumb with regards to flavour/taste and assuming the right age, the smaller species taste better than the larger deer species. But at the end of the day perhaps it all comes down to the ability of the cook
  9. Snap - I think you have hit the nail on the head here - you use the correct weight of bullet head for deer when using the 243. I expect your M/V is around the 2900 mark. There is a chap not far from me using a 55gr in his 243 - his M/v must be up around 3700 - he has no option but neck/head shots. The 55gr was designed for small game like foxes in the 243
  10. Most people try not to smash rabbits to bits - seems a waste of a natural organic food source. The good news about uprating the 177 is that you will obviously be able to extend your killing range. The bad news is that if you ever decide to sell the FAC air then it will only appeal to a limited market
  11. I would go along with Mr L the RL10X is the recipe powder for the 204. I reload/develop for a friend and the following is what is possible with this great little calibre - even with 40gr heads
  12. That certainly would not be fair, Vim may tread on a few toes, but at least his views are based on experience and I bet he never regards deer as vermin as others do. A forum should have lively debate - after all we are not robots with calibre/bullet choice. Personally I get fed up with forum questions like "What scope for my HMR?" - if this forum only included inane questions like that I would go back to watching the telly.
  13. I must be the odd one out then - I shoot rifles with both eyes open - I suppose on air and rim it makes little difference however on centre fire I have always been concerned about blinking at the shot. Normally, if you close one eye and with the open eye looking through the scope you will notice that the open eye will partially close in sympathy with the closed eye and upon squeezing the trigger there is more tendency to blink because the eye is half closed anyway. On the other hand if both eyes are wide open, blinking (or worse - flinching) is less likely to happen - may be wrong but I t
  14. Think you will find that most animal corpses being corpses dont need chasing - unless you have different corpses than the rest of us
  15. If I was to be picky, I would say you probably don't understand too much about ballistics. Firstly with regard to deer shooting 'fast' is not a requirement nor is 'flat' (whatever that is) perhaps you meant less loopy. You cant get more loopy than the 6mmPPC but its more accurate than most rifle calibres. Accuracy is the only bit I can agree with you. As for little meat damage - Hm... seen too many end results with 243 to agree with that - you may therefore be horrified to learn that there are a few Scottish Estates that will not permit guests to use the 243.
  16. FWIW I would recommend a mod that is strippable - many mods are not and if you get a problem with them you cant take them to bits to find the fault or even clean them. I have a couple of Predator 8 s and they strip into 5 pieces with the added advantage that if you change calibres you can just buy the appropriate baffle for that calibre without having to buy a totally new mod. See http://gunmart.net/accessories_review/wild...lar_moderators/
  17. Not too much help to you as although I use N160 in my 6.5 I dont use the great lumps you use. Have a look at this page - all that I could find for the Mega http://www.reloadersnest.com/detail.asp?Ca...amp;LoadID=8987 Whilst you are about it there are other loads for the 6.5 that may make you change direction - sometimes certain powders and bullet weights are simply NOT compatible with each other. Because you happen to have a load of a certain powder and/or heads can lead to the start of major heartache trying to marry them up. According to my book the CAOL for the Sierra (142 gr
  18. If you are referring to the Buttalo (sp) squeaker they do work well during the roe rut in July. I have also used it to call a doe out when in season - she will mistake the call for one of her young. Would say this , not everyone can master their use on when and how to use it effectively.
  19. My guess would be an immature buzzard - when young their heads have a lot of white on them
  20. As others have stated, the law re mods is a little woolly to say the least. I have 5 mods on various rifles and when these were purchased at various times I got my RFD to put them down in the 'make column' as N/K (not known) That way I can exchange them without all this legal stupidity. After all, a mod on its own isn't exactly a dangerous item.
  21. Do me a favour !! Do you want the post code? Is not Exmoor good enough? Seen bigger in the wild? This ain't no park deer. Currently, stood up the tip of his antlers are 9 feet from the ground. If an average height guy (5' 10") stood next to him his shoulders would be level with the top of his rump. When he stands next to a mature hind they compare to a great dane and a cocker spaniel. A guy I know who has been involved with red deer over 40 years in this area has never seen a bigger one See http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/envi...icle6865411.ece
  22. Unlike Charlie T I don't have a 204, however I was asked to develop a load for a friend. Having done that and seen what it can do, I am a convert to the 204 and this is coming from a someone who has a 17 Rem and two 22.250s - I'd gladly swap my 17 Rem for a 204. My friend was the guy in Sporting Rifle a couple of months back who was featured with his 204 after he shot a fox weighing about 28 lbs. I have been with him recently whilst shooting crows on maize stubble out to 265 yds rangefinder confirmed. When we were deciding what weight heads to use, this was the result of two five shot
  23. Dont know whether any of you had read the recent press coverage of this red deer stag that is reckoned to be the biggest in the UK. Took this picture of him last year - thought that he would be going back this year - not so Called him from two fields away and took this at about 40 yards - had to shout at him to stop. He stood watching me for a looooong 20 seconds before turning back to join his hinds.
  24. I dont shoot 243 but have loaded for a guy's 6mm x 284 and the 55g Blitzkings were seated just 55 thou into the case, however, this was a custom rifle. A general rule would be to seat these short heads about a 1/3 the way in of the neck. Most factory rifles have no problem with a jump into the lands - unless you have a custom barrel forget about this business of seating the bullet near the lands. One of my 22.250 s did a .17 at 100 last week and that shoots 137 thou back and my 6.5 will shoot 1.25" at 300 and that is seated 222 thou back - both factory rifles
  25. Opened the BARGC site - was a little concerned that this respected council should show a photo of a stalker with the barrel of his rifle resting on the thumb stick
