I'll take a look mate.

I've always gone ratting so I naturally wondered what the possibilities of taking them with a hawk would be. My current ratting spots are unsuitable due to cows etc and the tonnes of slurry. In game crop i think rats would provide good sport as long as no poison was being used in the area. So no I haven't gone looking for rats with my hawk but when a mate said he might know where a rat might bolt into a field I was keen to try it. My hawk has killed a rat but it was in the open, I think going after them in cover and in woodland like I have done with dogs would be right up there with squirrels

A disappointing weekend but one with a couple of incidents, the hawks weight was up a bit yesterday so her response was slow, she did have a good hunt on a squirrel but it made it to heavy cover and was lost. Still it was a very exciting few minutes, after that she missed a phessie. There weren't many rabbit around but I'd seen two lads leaving the area with air rifles and a dog so they may have moved the bunnies along or to ground. After that the pointer found a little rat set on the edge of a beck and with his digging and me poking around with a stick four rats did bolt but easily got into t

Who did the 100? That's an incredible achievement for a dog in one night, when I used to go on the lurcher forums a few years ago it would come up every now and then and the possibility of it debated. If you've seen a dog take 100 rabbits single handed you've seen something very few if anybody else has seen. For it to have gone ferreting the next day blows my mind. What lurcher cross was it? Has the night been wrote about on here or elsewhere or did you get a picture?

I could handle any amount of noise from hawks, chickens, dogs , geese, horses etc etc. My neighbours couldn't.

That's Arcticgun's glove, my hawk gets too upset by strange dogs so even though she got to catch a rabbit today I'm not too happy. Even though she has caught game over my pointer she definitely worries about him at times. I'll see what position we are at by the end of the season. As it stands we aren't compatible. Worst case scenario is ill have to part with her and get in a youngster in for next season. I haven't give up yet though, either way ill do what I need to do.

Out this afternoon I bumped into Arcticgun and his hawk. Mine went mental when he saw the spaniel because she is still bad around dogs and I think always will be.Anyway we split up and mine jumped onto a rabbit which had a touch of mixi, the other hawk arrived above us but by the time Arctic caught up it had disappeared. We soon found her on top of another bunny in a thick bush. After that with my hawk acting up we split up again and I went looking for something along the beck, when I got back to Arcticgun I saw his hawk fly down onto rabbit number three.

Its been a difficult week with all the wind and rain, yesterday I went to a dales area but the wind either blew her across the field or made her overshoot. She did get to kill a suicidal rat around a pond a few days ago and a moorhen today. Trying to stay positive with the weather constantly hindering us.

Nice one mate.

The weather is a pain in the a***. I tried to fly mine over the last couple of days but she just gets blown away. I'm not worried about losing her as such as she battles her way back to us or waits in a tree or on a factory roof etc but she can't fly at stuff properly . It's frustrating and not something I've had to face whilst doing other types of hunting. Im pretty keen on my hunting and like to get out as much as possible. I've found There's a different type of commitment needed with a hawk over say working dogs,it's not all about doing as much in the field as possible, it's as much about

Minkenry Hunting Stories For Thioⁿbasabe'
pointer replied to Minkenry's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Well done and another brilliant write up of a days hunting. -
Lol She puts up with me every day so a couple of hundred quid here and there ain't no big deal. I picked up a pair of Seeland wellies, they feel real comfortable with a vibram sole so I think they will be even better than Muckboots. I put back the £250 trousers, I'd have only been left crying when the inevitable happened and I ripped them up on barbed wire.Nice gear in there but mostly out of my price range.

It's not been good here lately either, I haven't ventured onto any dales land yet but wherever we go the dog is bringing out dead mixy rabbits. Its a dirty habit he has but shows the extent of the problem. There aren't any reared pheasants where I go so they aren't that numerous and don't always sit tight to give me time to set up the right flush but that's often the case with wild phessies that have seen a few dogs and lived through being shot at etc. Now that the clocks change ill have to give lamping a go.. I've seen some good sport this week so I'm relatively happy. I'd have liked to

She did mate buying a Seeland jacket and Le Chameau wellies lol.

She caught a pheasant this morning over the pointer. She had missed two earlier so I was pleased her hard work paid off. More than that not so long ago she would fly away across fields at the sight of my dog, Articgun saw how she acted, so to see her this week starting to realise that the dog is her ally makes me feel pretty good lol.

I worry about everything mate lol

I can only imagine, I don't think mine could have held on for much longer with little more than the rabbits toes in her talons. It was windy this evening but I still went out for an hour. I only saw two rabbits and they weren't in any risk but I was happy to see the hawk watching the dog and battling against the gusts of wind to stay with us. It was too windy and I was maybe taking a risk, but I feel we are making some progress and that she is accepting the dog. The daft dog brought me a dead mixied rabbit out of the bramble. Thankfully he dropped it when told and I was able to hide it befo

Thanks mate, She plunged into nettle and bramble and managed to grab hold of the rabbits back foot, she was then dragged about a bit. When I got to her she had her legs either side of a small tree with the rabbit jumping all over. It took a couple of minutes to untangle her before she calmly waited for me to take off one of its back legs for a smooth trade off. I can't fault her keenness but worry about her feathers when she gets bashed about that.
-
Managed to get out after work today between the rain showers and she got a rabbit
-
Sounds good mate. Mines had a few unlucky flights this week including one on a pheasant that lost a few of its tail feathers lol.
-
Sadly I think the mixy will clear it better than I can.
-
Yeah it was a shame, still it got the hawk an easy kill over the pointer so I can take something from that.

With the wind last week and the rain this week it's been hard to get out hunting but we've had a couple of good hunts but no kills. The cover has made life hard and rabbits are pretty scarce. Anyway today within ten minutes of leaving the car the pointer had flushed out a mixied rabbit which the hawk jumped on. The poor bunny was seriously ill so it dosent really count but the hawk seemed happy and what's more she has started to look towards the dog to find her quarry. Theres more work to do before I get the dog/ hawk partnership I want but its a start
