  1. Its brilliant what your doing, something different.
  2. Hawk is ready to go hunting again, the weather is stopping us at the moment and the weekend forecast doesn't look good. We will just have to see how it goes.
  3. I'm seeing less and less everyday and I haven't even started hunting them yet. If its bad now it will be far worse by Christmas.
  4. Good luck, with the seriously low rabbit population I'll certainly be targeting the odd one soon.
  5. I liked hunting the odd moorhen last season, on more open land I suppose they can be caught easily but I know a patch of bramble around a large pond where it took time to locate and flush them. We had a few good hunts with the hawk crashing through cover , most of the ones I put up for her made it safely across the water into more cover but a few went the other way into the field and then it was a forgone conclusion they would be caught. I found the hunts were quite exciting. I imagine like all quarry everything rests on the terrain, rabbits are easy if bolted from the middle of big open fiel
  6. Your up and running now mate, Had mine out for a couple of hours on the glove today for the first time this season. Shouldn't be long before she's back in action.
  7. I'll just have to travel further if I need more rabbits. I don't see a problem until later in the season when I'll want to do multiple kills. Even then I may find enough quarry to satisfy my needs. I'd be panicking if I still ran a lurcher.
  8. I think we are in for a bad time of it around here and into the Durham Dales. We will just have to do what we can do.
  9. Keep the diary going mate, I'm looking forward to getting mine going again as soon as I can get her ready. The cover is seriously high around here this year and with mixi looking particularly rife it's going to be interesting to see how we get on. Plenty of hares about though if I ever want to get mine onto them in the future.
  10. I had a look up the dales for an hour to see how many rabbits are about. As my hawk isn't ready to fly again yet I took my pointer and old lurcher with me. Sadly there were dead mixied rabbits dotted about and the dogs caught a couple more, we did put up a few healthy bunnies and as we didn't walk very far there could be more in other areas but the signs aren't good. Maybe enough though to keep a Harris occupied especially If using a ferret in the little two hole sets. I don't care how many rabbits can be caught elsewhere this valley is stunning and with a mix of rushes, bracken, streams and
  11. It was a split second decision that I got wrong and will regret for the rest of my life. Sadly the marlin got the line wrapped around its head area and badly cut a gill so it had to be killed which was a real shame for such a creature. I never got a chance of landing anything big this time, luck of the draw. Other lads caught big stingray and shark. I caught a shark last night but mine was only a foot long lol. I'm happy enough I wanted to catch fifty types of fish this summer I'm at fifty six so I can get back home and concentrate fully on my Harris hawk. I think I'm in a position to fl
  12. Lol I'm ready to come back now, its been good but two weeks is maybe a few days too many.I passed up the chance to reel in a White Marlin when I thought it was on another persons rod not one of the extras the crew had put out. It's been a hard thing to take as the Marlin is arguably the greatest fish of them all. I'll give you the full story when I get back. My feet are blistered from the rock hopping out fishing and I took a fairly nasty fall the other day which only cut my ankle and a few other scraps but the next day I felt like I'd been kicked in the ribs and back. So now it hasn't
  13. I don't low about falconry because I haven't done a full season yet but with most hunting everybody starts out with the best intentions of hunting every spare hour they have etc. It's easily done at the beginning, at this time of year you can do a lot of stuff. The same later on in the season. However it can be hard to keep things going well all season long. At least it was for me at times, those hard winters played havoc with my hunting once being stuck in heavy snow in Ireland for a week. There's nothing you can about harsh weather but its made worse the more stock you have that isn't gettin
  14. Lol I spent half an hour today watching a guy training two retrievers in the rocky hills, he had an old Podenco hound with him as well but sadly his English was worse than my Spanish so I couldn't talk to him.
  15. Dexter did look well when I saw him today.
  16. Honestly with seeing threads about others already getting their hawks going I do feel like I'm missing out and being made to go abroad. Maybe if a big Skate or tuna tries to rip my arm out of its socket i won't feel as bad lol.
  17. The falconry world could do with a few diary type books, how to look after them etc has been done to death. One of the big name falconers should do a book covering a full seasons day by day hunting, I'd buy it for sure.
  18. I've just seen this thread, keep the updates coming. I've got to go and spend two weeks trying to catch Fish out of the Atlantic before I can get back out hunting but it won't be long.
  19. I think my Harris hawk even if flown regularly will take up less time than working my lurcher did. The one thing that always seems to come out when talking of birds of prey is the time factor. There will be lurcherman and terriermen and hound men on this site that will spend more time out working their dogs than the average Harris hawker will. ANY working animal or hunting/shooting/fishing sport can take up all of your spare time and all of your money lol and but as birds are put away for the moult they maybe give the owner more time in the summer to do other things than a pack of dogs would.
  20. Why do falconers seem to have to go to Scotland for grouse? Is it not available on the northern England moors?
  21. If you mean the bitch in the middle she is out of a Gwp and Nuttalls Casper.
