No Money In Pest Control!
derbylad1 replied to mole trapper's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Whilst I was still in the army, I decided that when I left I would never work for anyone again....no way!!! I took a massive gamble and got my head stuck in the books, did my research, spent time working with a pest controller, loved it!! but it was hard work. I went on the 5 day residential BPCA Level 2 course....did some more learning and then set up my own business. The course is all about health & safety, legislation and some of the materials you'd be expected to use. It doesn't teach you how to be a pest controller!!! I've learnt from my mistakes, not in the job but marketing/ -
What Age Do You Start Your Pups Lamping?
derbylad1 replied to Dranny GLC's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I'm with Sirius on this. I cant see any point in taking a pup with you lamping just to watch, I think it'll just frustrate the little fella (and you for that fact as well). Going back to the original question, you've got to make sure the pup/young dog is mentally and physically ready and only the owner knows when this. If your not sure, then ask someone who does. And I'm a big believer in "little and often", 10 minutes here and 10 minutes there......1 or 2 runs only. And if you do catch, end on high and go home, and don't think "just one more". -
I was issued both sets of the boots you have the links on. The pro boot was good around camp and doing the fitness tests in and that's about it, they break up and let the water in. And then take ages to dry. However the ECW boot I still have (oops...I forgot to hand them back in) and think they're great boots. I walk the moors, go ferreting etc etc; in them and still going fine after 3 years. They have one let down though....that if you break them in and the crease ends up where the eyelet is, then the eyelet pops out. I live with it.

another wind up

I've said this before, if I was you I'd put up a fresh post asking if anyone will let you tag along on their ferreting sessions. Hopefully someone with a wealth of experience can teach you the ropes. That way you'll get plenty of work for your ferrets and plenty of bunnies flying back at you!!

Yep...I'm self employed. I do very seasonal work (mostly summer) so I enjoy getting out with the dogs in winter. I don't have a moaning bird or anyone telling me what I can or cant do.

Find out what the basic's are and then go back to them

What your looking at is fine for what you want to do. But remember, breeding is only one of the factors to consider, the main thing is how you bring it on and enter the pup to the field.

Hi Folks, I have ferret kits available for free to working homes. I say working homes because they'd be wasted as pets, because they come from excellent working parents. I took a long time out to choose the right hob to go with my brilliant working jill, as I wanted to make sure I can get some good workers for myself. There are polecats only, but hobs and jills available. Anyway if your interested then please in touch on PM, as I don't get on here much nowadays. I'll then send you my phone number to give me a call. Cheers Gaz

Some don't like gun...airguns or otherwise. I've had permission on one of my farms for nearly 10 years and he still wont let use an air rifle on there. Try using a different direction, ferreting, ratting or even moles. Once you get your foot in the door, give them some bollocks about getting more pests gone if you use an air rifle.

Available Rabbit Shooting/ferreting Buxton
derbylad1 replied to derbylad1's topic in Rabbit Shooting
bump -
Alright folks, I've had a rabbit job come up in Buxton. Its a favour for a favour, so not a paid job. Its a few acres with plenty of rabbits to have a go at and no doubt will be good for ferreting in the future. It also lies next to an allotment and farmers field, so no doubt you could expand from there. It would be for air rifle only and if you plan to ferret it, then dogs will need to be rock steady with live stock. If anyone is interested please PM me.

Here you go mate, its the only rabbit tap I could find...lol

Its an odd one, but with us becoming a sueing culture like the yanks, then its understandable. A risk assessment is a kind of report from a survey, that decides if there are any risks involved with you shooting on your permission. It first says what the hazards are, (eg. you carrying a gun to shoot quarry) and then what are the risks (what could happen ie. you shoot someone). It then gets written down how these incidents can be prevented. I hope that makes sense. You have no reason at all to be worried. You will be asked a few questions on how you conduct your shoot but that about it.

Hi folks, Last year I made contact to Lightforce asking if they had any intentions to rectify the problems their lamps have, ie wiring, connections etc etc. Some of you gave me your feedback, that I then forwarded onto them. This then prompted them to withdraw the release of the new type of the lightforce lamps to the market. They have made alterations to the lamp, of which I am yet to trial and give them feedback. (Hard to do at this time of year, but you cant knock a gift horse in the mouth). Anyway, what I am after now lads/lasses, what is your general thoughts on the lamps that
