  1. thats the biggest point for me an one thats being missed by most here mate. some dogs i would like to think could do it in the end, but it aint sport, it aint neccessary, and its downright f***ing cruel, not to mention stupid. just hope there arent some young lads on here with big dogs thinking 'i bet ours can'. could all end in tears well said mate Well in that case, lets not hunt at all. Lets all turn veggy. Because hunting involves cruelty (depending on your definition). Is it cruel when wolves make a kill on a large stag? This is no different! It isnt neccessary to hunt rabbits
  2. I will tell him to get a lottery ticket on this week. The fact that it came out of a 'double' catch must up the odds even more. That was the very first time the trap had been in the ground, no 'weathering' just in straight out of the box, with a few tweeks, so I'm told... Good Hunting fella's. JD
  3. A mate of mine caught a silver mole in one of two double catches off one field this morning. The chances of that must be pretty darned slim... Here are a couple of pics.
  4. It's to do with the grazing and good feed matey. Take a southern red to scotland and within a generation or two there will be no discernable difference. Sure there is wapiti blood in SOME southern reds, but only those in certain areas i am lead to believe. I read something similar in a book and tend to take what I read with a pinch of salt Yes my darling, that's what i always recommend.
  5. Yes mate, one thing to bear in mind, if you are beating toward a hedge, make sure your net is set on the opposite side to where you are, they seem to go in easier. You will not make a hare go where it doesn't want to so theres a bit of field craft involved in where to set the net(s). Good luck.,

  7. You need some hare boxes to transport them. I have netter scores and the secret to it is to get Sally into a SMALL dark box asap. And, don't wait for her to go in the net of her own accord, she isnt daft, give her a bit of a 'GEE!' up....
  8. jd you should get out more and write less.all this silly talk of running deer in the day ffs get real only a mug would run deer in the day.get out more jd you may learn a thing or two you talk of sika like there hard i have yet to see a sika stag get away from any dog. whats the biggest stag or buck you have ever taken jd ? you write about real deal dogs jd how many are the real deal ? 'Get out more'.....I don't know if that is possible old chap. If you did half the miles i did then you would be tired. Nowhere have i ever said sika are hard, in fact, just the opposite. I wa
  9. They are all hard matey. I can speak from some experience when i say the hinds are harder to take than fallow bucks or sika stags. They are simply another animal! I have seen good dogs that can stop big sika stags come a cropper when faced with red hinds. One had its teeth kicked straight out! When it was legal i travelled all over the Uk in their pursuit and have had some fabulous times chasing those reds, both with one dog and two. Facts is,for a man to take a red (either sex) with lurchers is rare. Mostly they will be doubled up (at least!) and mostly it will be a hind. In the rare occasio
  10. In the daytime, wild and unrestricted, I'm voting a resounding NO!. and by the way, the scottish deerhounds were used for stags that had been shot first in most cases, so i am lead to believe.
  11. Wine bottles and watersports!

  12. My friend is still waiting since xmas for goods. Lots of phone calls and no goods.
  13. This has got to be the best topic ever on THL....Keep it going chaps.
  14. Ricky ,honestly think Mr Darcy has a lot more dignity and respect for himself to be writing a book about this man,s past . Yes, I don't know how my name was dragged into this. I have never met the man and have no intention of either. Good Hunting Folks....cheers
  15. I agree with Labtastic, no lurcher can IMO be as good as a specialist bred gundog in the command/retrieving type of FT thang..., not a good one anyway, though im sure the best lurchers would be better than the worst gun dogs. ...Just going off on a tangent, has any good gundog trainer been seen with a good lurcher.?
  16. Some strong views.....Keep 'em coming lads.....
  17. Sorry JD, it's the way you write, you don't explain yourself properly. Tell me please, you claim to be a fountain of knowledge in the coursing world, what top match dogs have you seen run first hand if you don't mind me asking? I am certainly not a fountain of knowledge in the coursing world. I have never said i was, so please don't put words in my mouth. I have, however, seen a few dogs run over the years. Just for the record, i have never owned a good coursing dog either, so, I do not make any claim to be anything other than a enthusiast of the saluki hybrid. I'm sorry but i hav
  18. If you read what i wrote...I was replying to your words... " A dog that can run as fast as a 3/4 collie cross but stays like a first cross saluki would be worth a fortune." In-so-much as there are plenty of dogs capable of this..... I was not refering to you not having seen a collie cross run.
  19. A lurcher that retrieves sure can be useful, and, I think, more of a companion than one just used for pursuits. Heres a good carry back from a 3/4 grey/1/4 saluki, with no lurcher in its pedigree. :angel:He works with the gun day or night, fur or feather. A handy dog to some people, but many wouldn't own him... It all depends on what you want your dog for i guess.....
  20. I'm sure there are a few on here that are decent folk, like the ones I mentioned above who ran in the Forley Cup. The ones I think are jumped up faggots, are the wannabees and hangers on who do nothing more than buy a saluki and a dvd and spout pish...... bit like you toby..... u are welcome to come out baw with us be interesting to see what your fast things do with our big bunnies Thanks for the invite Karlsberg, pm sent mate Just to clear the air, it was tongue and cheek what I said about the coursing guys on here. Of course I rate what you do. You do what you like doing an
