  1. Aye, good point there! But one point that has been missed by some, is that single holers are a strict NO NO with todays (rediculous) legisltion!
  2. The bucks fight sometimes and will chew each others ears, sometimes clean off! I used to trap hundreds of rabbits in drop-box traps, and often, i would find that some of them had had their ears chewed off whilst being in the confinement of the trap, by another rabbit.
  3. Stoats are worse, but weasels need controlling if your a keeper! They do lots of damage wild game during nesting time, mainly to eggs and chicks. But can occaisionally take adult game, especially partridge. It pays to learn of the habbits and differences between the stoat and the weasel before starting to trap up.
  4. Nice one woodga! Recognise all that land myself, as i do some neighbouring farms! Nice to see, and a good result too.
  5. there is a lot around here that we bring them back for,ie dog food and the old folk etc,but they dont want them every day. i suppose we can just keep doing what we are for now until a better thing turns up. Keep the feelers out, your bound to find someone in your county who will pay a fair price.
  6. Please dont use either of the above as there are also red squirrels in your area, you must use a live catch cage trap, theres many available in the shops, but better still ring the Wildlife Trusts (Northumberland) let then know which woods you have permision to control squirrels in, and they will send you a few traps for free! 7. This is him the day he was born.
  8. Hello evryone! Yep...... i think Simoman was right, the calm before the storm! He found his tounge last night, big style. :shout: He is called Cameron. Il get some pics up later on today!
  9. So sorry mate, ive not got a p.c sorted at my new place so this is the first time ive been on for ages! Yes its true the wee sprog popped out on sept 3rd weighing just 6lb 1oz! I cant get over how quiet he is, hardly makes a squeak! I'll get some pics up soon. Thanks all D n N
  10. Hello fellow Northumbrian! Nice pack you have there!! Hope you enjoy the site
  11. It aint that bad I dont think, in fact I like the articles from overseas! Those yanks have some cracking sporting hunting over there, I get canny jelous sometimes! Im sure that now the season is getting started, some good British stories will come in. In my opinion, its the best mag out, supporting our way of life. Im certainly sticking with it all the way mate. I really liked J Darceys article a couple of months back about those animals that manage to outwit (or outrun!) us and our dogs... a cracking read for me!
  12. They will takle any quarry, will dig on for rats all day! The reason I prefer the larger cockers or springers is to make them too big to get to ground! They are a hunting cross bred though, and that is the job they excell at.
  13. In my experience they are an excellent hunting dog, almost hound-like, they are energetic and quite hyper active at home, but once out in the field they are a different dog! I use mine to hunt quarry out of woods to waiting guns. Or just out daytime mooching with the lurcher. They will stick on a line for a long way, so maybe not too good for areas with lots of busy roads. They give tounge usually and scream on a fox! Obviously, I can only comment on the ones ive seen and owned, others may differ. The type of cocker ive used is the large, strong type, which are very different dogs to some of
  14. I remember going into lowther show about 15 years ago, in the queue of cars on the way in, there were loads of hornets all over the cars, it was a hot day, and they were flying into the cars through the open windows. It was absolute mayhem! People running round screaming! Hilarious!
  15. You said you got a mk3 box, you got a mk3 collar.... they are the correct combo allready?? I may have read wrong like, but all deben collars will work with any box. Ive used mk3 box with mk1 collar, and vice versa. The only thing is that they will not have the range of the correct collar. And the readings are way off, usually they show the terrier to be further under than it actually is.
  16. No, the terrier was never developed with Bushing in mind mate, they were bred for earthwork and the rough coat helps them cope with harsh weather in bleak hill country.
  17. Some might. Dont collie X's guard? As most of the farm collies are bloody good guards! Those American bulldogs look the biz!
  18. The best guard dogs NEED to LOOK scarry, even if they wont takle someone, they will be bloody off putting to any strangers as they stand growling and barking at them. I would go for a large breed, like a doberman, mastiff or belgian or german shepard. As most of the time its the deterrent factor that does the job. This is a Mastiff/Rottweiler. And he is a damn good guard.
  19. Sounds like the nail covering has come off and left the 'quick' exposed. Dont worry, it will heal well if it is kept clean. Wash regularly with detol or hibiscrub, these products are better than salt water for this injury as they dont dry the nail bed out as much, but if you have nowt else, salt water will do.
  20. Its interesting stuff isnt it, how they can revert back to a wild form so quickly. Strange how different animals evolve quicker than others. Thanks for all the info so far chaps. Any more opinions or experiences anyone?
  21. nice! They have good noses but not soft mouthed ey good bushers none the less!
  22. No bother mate, any time! Your spaniel has certainly found his vocation up there, diddnt do owt wrong all day! Some just need a bit more space.
  23. a bit of hound is better than a bit of spaniel Depends what you need from your bushing dog..... I think people have very different needs from their bushing dogs, and to some, hounds like beagles are much too likely to feck off on a scent than a spaniel, and so completely useless for them. If you want a dog to flush game from cover, but stay within, say, 40/50 yards or so, then a spaniel is the one. Most good spaniels will work ANY cover.
