  1. Nice shooting mate, looks a canny rifle, what make/model is it? Are you seeing plenty bunnies about for this season around your neck of the woods? Its hotching with them up here. Regards DnN
  2. My young half cross is getting quite trustworthy with his nose now, and im starting to learn what he is marking by his behaviour. He will act differently with different quarry, which, i suppose is very handy. Another thing with mine is his tracking ability, as I hunt with spaniels and crosses, and if one goes off in the other direction giving tounge, I can slip him away to catch up with the hound, where he will take over and persue the rabbit, and sometimes make the catch.
  3. Long hill walks, or following the quad bike for mine.
  4. Went to one local show this year organised by my local terrier club. I felt quite sick watching the posers trotting around the ring with their smart pampered looking terriers. And felt like smacking the judge when he picked out a load of shite above several well worked black terriers and a cracking red dog shown by John Park. So I cant stand them mate, fecking waste of time..... the ones ive been to anyway! I do hear good things about some, but im sure as far as working terrier shows go, I think the bad FAR outweigh the good. Unfortunately!
  5. Some excellent posts here, im just going to add another hint to help distinguish between fox and deer. And thats when you spot the fox you usually cannot see both eyes seperately, but often with deer a gap between can be seen.
  6. There busy on the grass here! WOO HOO!! But havent started the barley or rape yet Wont be too long though. Im out tonight with my cousin on the lamp, everything has had a bumper breeding year this year (up here at least) ive never had so much work on.
  7. I like a calm and steady natured dog, with a confident outlook. And ive got to say that most working borders that I have seen up here have a very laid back temprament, until they see some work, when they suddenly switch on. But same cant be said for MOST borders today, as they are bred for money and looks and the temprament has been lost.
  8. Yeah quite possibly, but its placed under the ledge, and must get used again as it is always changing, with new stuff being added.
  9. Ha ha thats a goodun milf! lol But this stuff looks like it has been gathered up like they would for their normal bedding but put under these crags. Around the area there are obvious signs where badgers have scratched it off the bank sides etc.. and a nice track to the sett. Honestly seams its been stored there in the dry. It has definatly not been the wind etc.. as there are varying degrees of dryed out leaves, from green to bone dry. With obvious badger tracks passing the place. Ive been working around badgers all my life, and its the only place i see this done. Im going to keep watc
  10. Near to some decent setts there are these crags where the badgers put mounds of bedding to dry out, I thought it was quite clever of them, and havent seen it done in other areas. Anyone else seen this?
  11. I was told by my grandfather about a lab/greyhound that he said was one of the best lurchers he ever seen. Was lethal on rabbit, fox and deer he reckoned. My grandad kept collie crosses, and swore by them, but he reckoned that lab/grey was a better lurcher than most of his collie crosses.
  12. Nice thread Rolfe! Ive done a bit of shooting alongside the combine, always enjoyable sport! but Ive never used lurchers But I love to see good dogs being used when possible! Good stuff! DnN
  13. I think it's just a split peg arrangement - bit like a Larsen. May be hinged at the ends I could get a pic, but it may be a wee while, as i dont have a computer at home, I use my friends now and then. The trigger is the perch that the bird lands on, which releases the arms that clap together. It works in the same prinsible as a Fenn, tunnel trap catch. The diameter of the catching arms(which, when set, form a circle) is about a meter. The spring runs lengthways in line with the pivot point of the two arms, and it is fairly strong Underneath is a compartment in which you could put a
  14. Sounds like a nice bit of sporting shooting in a cracking location. Would like to try some of those dishes myself, sounds tasty!
  15. Border terriers were the ones used up this area for otter work, and they were a very hard terrier, but must have used their brain well.
  16. The pup I have now, I bred myself, he looks like he will be a bit more bully looking than either parent.
  17. I used general grabbers on my pick-up. I changed to these after having BF mud terrain, and I think the Grabbers are a much grippier tyre.
  18. I seen a woodcock last weekend deep in the kielder forrest, there are a few that stay and breed in there. Looking forward to the start of the game season more than ever this year!
