  1. you don't want much then ? What he has said isnt asking the impossible. true, but its the exception rather than the rule IMO Its no exception.... just KEEN dogs, with a good nose, (and some brains) is all i must be mixing in the wrong circles! what cross has been your preference over the years. Good lurcher x good lurcher is what I prefer. I keepered mile after mile of hill ground, empty barren land, that if a keen lurcher wants to catch game, IT HAS TO USE ITS NOSE, otherwise it would see f**k all. My lampers were fecking nuts mate, and far from everyones cup of tea, they

  3. I never said it was,... just trying to explain how folk do things in other countries.
  4. No shit sherlock... They have saluki/tazi types Galore over there too, they know what they are doing... the greyhound has a massive following with folk who like the quick race... loads of hares get away, because, like you pointed out, the dogs burn out pretty fast. They use a lot of UK racing/old coursing lines there. Its a social event, as well as a contest between dogs, and as far as Ive seen they eat every hare caught, nothing is chucked in the ditch! Believe me some of the arable the land they run makes the fens look like garden lawns. They do things there way, and I for one dont f
  5. Dont think for a minute im defending them, or agree with the way they hunt. But Ive been over and seen for myself, and trust me they do keep some decent stuff for all game. You must have been over the far east of europe/russia yourself to have such bold statements? The dogs are usually owned by different folk, and its a bit of crack and a sort of competition. Just to repeat, i dont condone doubling up at all. But I would never be so hasty to call a dog shit because it happens to be running with another two on a youtube video
  6. Thats just how they run hares in their country, got no baring on the dogs quality
  7. Nice catches.... but thats greyhounds for ya.... they generally dont 'piss aboot' good vids though, I enjoyed them, cheers for posting
  8. I think you know what makes a good fox dog worthy of the 'title' My opinion, for what its worth: The lurcher should be a proficient lamper, following the beam, looking for those eyes... running out on the beam even if quarry is unsighted trusting that there is quarry down the beam. I like a dog that will go beyond the beam on the brush of a fox into the dark, as many foxes are caught other side of hill or hedge for example, so a dog that turns back as soon as quarry leaves view of lamp is not much use to me. Hunt open hill and forest all day, finding fox using its nose, so for me nose
  9. Aye, the wolves over there are serious pain in the arse. I will do my best to keep the feck away from them!
  10. Marran gives a dark egg as does welsomer Normal brown eggs from the black rock, and other hybrids, also the rhode island... light brown from the light sussex, english game, blue bell. The mediteranian breeds with the white lobes lay white eggs, best layer being the leghorn (1per day) Thats some ive had experience with Good hunting DnN
  11. Aye born hunter I thought the dog was a dead un. And yeah, wolves in North America are a royal pain in the arse from what I hear, they even home in on hunting hounds to eat their quarry and the hounds themselves. f**k that. Im taking the dogs hunting in Canada shortly, and I would rather not get them all eaten by wolves! Touch wood.
  12. Hunted boar myself with the running dogs, but no casualties, just a few cuts n bruises. Like has been said, way more likely to loose a dog in the persuit of game than the game itself... lost a few terriers, but apart from injuries, my hunting dogs have never met their end in the field touch wood, and Ive seen my bullx go off a cliff in the pyrenese after a chamois, he was bruised but ok.
  13. He is a top bloke for sure, said his favourite place was London, and when he goes he just kips in the back of his car because he doesnt care for hotels etc ... such a humble guy.... quite inspiring.
  14. Anyone on here from Yukon? I'll be there with my dogs autumn (fall) time.
  15. I get the impression that you think all bull cross owners are non educated delinquents, and if you wanna be a good respectful hunter, you need a collie cross? I totally agree with respecting quarry, but why bring breeds into it, as its surely the dogs owners at fault, not the dog? In the last thread you liked an all rounder, and this one you hate folk that can kill any game they come accross? Seems you have a bee in your bonet about something...? Where is all this evidence youve been reading on here about folk not disrespecting their quarry, as surely the mods should have done something a
  16. Im gonna breed my next pup myself, working deerhound type.
  17. Not just a health risk, but the dog can easy turn into a lazy lathargic useless pot licker
  18. PM incoming! Im trying to dig out old pics of my grandfather and great gradfathers... they lived in Darlington. And were heavily into running dogs terriers, and greyhounds. Had a small farm, he worked at the rolling mills.
  19. Yeah nowt wrong a good collie cross. But to be honest there are so many about that wont entertain teeth it gives them a bad name, but then ive seen bull crosses turn a nose at them. The likes of handcock breeding from any old shit will likely add to the trash. In my opinion each and every longdog or lurcher should handle a fox, or at least be keen, as ye cant expect a whippet to take a few each night of the week. Boils my piss when some dogs refuse teeth point blank, thats a failed lurcher if I owned it. Just my opinions, so please folks dont bite my head off. I know there are some good handco
  20. Ive been lucky and got my dogs free or cheap, from mates, but if I needed a certain type I would pay only what I feel its worth paying, if its too uch, dont buy. There are a few still out there that are not all about the money.
  21. I personally found cockers more to my liking, after working springers before them. We have 2 sprockers in the family aswell, and they are decent enough workers. The cockers I had loved foxing and ratting as much as flushing game birds and rabbits, so I found them great all rounders, they were rarely left in kennel!!
  22. I understand the trouble with finding the right stock, but there are good deerhounds out there- bred for work. Took me some serious searching aswell, but now got a choise of a handful of useful animals. Fearless and tough as the hills, is what a deerhound should be.
