Any You Lads Lamp With Your Dog Off The Leader
dogs-n-natives replied to one more's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
If Im scanning she walks by my side, if I light something up and it is seen by her, I let her make her own call, as that will be GO. If she hasn't seen the quarry, if its squatting or over a brow I hiss quietly, she will trot the beam right out if needed. -
I remember red dawn posting them as pups, Im glad I bumped into this article. All the best for the coming season, hope you get some good'ns out of the breeding.

I bet ya miss finding those porno's haha proper ferreters perk them Folk letting their dogs out aye, you might get police round for that these days! I miss going out hunting with the dogs, and not worrying about ridiculous laws.
-
With regard to the ferrets, it works both ways. The dog needs to be steady with the ferrets, but the ferrets also need to be steady with the dog. Probably my most used command when ferreting is 'wait'. Which I guess is my version of stay. If you are not a bell end, and want to give the whip a try in the season, I don;t object to showing you the ropes over a day. I run a whippet as well. That's a kind offer, they would be a bell end not to take you up on that

My bitch aye, my dog... no f***ing chance haha -
No matter how much you prepare, your in for a fun learning curve, and your dog will be all the happier and healthier the more rabbiting you do with it Im sure of that. Livestock training is an absolute must though. Its always good to hear of folk starting out, as these days I'm surprised folk aren't completely put off with all the negative media etc. Good on you, and good luck.

You boys have all the new fangled shiney fancy looking new shite lol mine is one of the old 97 carbine, still does me well enough. But can I ask some advice.? I want to upgrade the spring to a new spring, or a gas ram, whats the best option for me, I just use it for pest control.

Someone mentioned fish... just now mine are getting loads of mackerel, easy to catch them in numbers through the summer months, and the dogs do great with the oily fish types. In the winter I sometimes splash out and buy a load of those tinned sardines from Costco lol great addition to the diet in my opinion.

Born Hunter, anything like that, working bred, should do the trick. Bring them up in the thick of it, they go like ducks to water and train easily. Tyla. November is still on! I will forward updates shortly... DnN

How's the chap in the second pic down bred DnN? CockerxFell??? Pretty much aye, some Russell, and some beagle in her too. She was a great hunter. Cast out very well, good finder if there was any game in the cover, it was getting hunted. Hot nosed, open up on track, and drives game well, didn't f**k off into the next county, didn't go to ground, would ignore rabbit and pheasant if there was fox or roe about, but could also be used like a spaniel with the shotgun as she was very obedient, though I never trained her for anything in particular, just worked with her, in her way.
-
Cheers mate, I cant wait to get her out in the woods.
-
Cheers buddy, my dogs rarely get left at home lol so they all end up entered to pretty much everything! I will be fox and boar driving with my gwp and catahoula, I will get pics up of the cat at some point, not got any of her on the comp yet. I will update as I proceed with her. She is well bred. Time will tell mate.

I started off with spaniels, being a keeper, and an avid beater. I found that they took to any quarry, but were lacking in range, and not willing to take a line very far. Understandable. So I bred my own cross bred terrier/beagle/cocker and these did the job of fox ejecting very well, from any cover, like reshy areas, to extensive forestry plantations. They would open up like screamers on a hot scent, and my best bitch Jess would even go round game and try to bring it back to me, which meant I could take her out alone, and come back with foxes and roe every day that were driven right past me.
-
Agree with that dee mac. well written.
-
Im in a similar position myself Mr Mac, always had spaniels as I was a keeper, but I changed when my old spaniels died, and got into the gwp's, I gotta say I have more of a connection with the pointers, they really suit my sort of mooching and rough shooting, with a bit of deer tracking, and some boar hunting too. In fact they get involved with pretty much everything I get up to. I reckon I would happily keep pointers for the rest of my days.

Bitches First And Last Breeding
dogs-n-natives replied to robbielisa's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Good luck with the plan, that breeding should make some fast and agile runners. -
The wren is a sneaky little tyke isn't it, I lay in plain view about 3 feet from the nest, and they soon started feeding the chicks, one nearly always had green caterpillars, and the other, spiders and insects. The insect catching parent was the first to come in and was much bolder, though always sneaky, the other parent was less willing to come near me. I left them to it. They are busy critters, and obviously good hunters as they are sometimes back at the nest 30 seconds from last being there.

I used to hunt a small pack of this type of dog, but mine were bred cocker/terrier x beagle or just cocker x terrier. This was my best bitch by far and worked very well on her own, as she would skim through the wood, and then hunt the quarry back towards me. DnN

No contest, the dried food diets will always be a poor substitute compared to the REAL THING.

A flying bat, taken back in April. It was still very wintery without many insects but I guess this guy had slept long enough. It didnt really warm up here until mid May, just went from winter to summer overnight almost! -
Got to agree with Bootsha here, do your best to nip it in the bud before lunatic city born bunny huggers rule over the decent country folk who take care of the countryside. We lost our battle, despite massive protests which most of us were involved in at the time. We should have been more prepared. Now we are ducking and dodging at every turn. And made to feel like criminals when doing an honest job in a countryside we love and respect. Good luck all you Ozzy hunters. DnN
