i pulled it off today(clayshooting)
SportingShooter replied to sounder's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Good to hear mate, the wind must have played hell with the clays today. Good luck in July and hope to see you coming away with some silverware. SS -
Yet again the Firearms Depts are making up the laws that suit them. They are talking a load of b*****ks. The law states that under the so-called estate rifle condition the owner or occupier of private land may let someone who doesnt have an FAC to use a rifle under his supervision. If this was as far as it went then you would be breaking the law. However, the ACPO and Home Office decided to clarify things. They said that the occupier should be taken as defined in the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, Section 27. This section defines the occupier as someone who has the fishing, hunting or

Can anyone identify this owl for me?
SportingShooter replied to SportingShooter's topic in Wildlife and General Photography
Thanks Gents SS -
First off, I respect your judgement of most things MR L, I just have a few things to clear up. It is tricky to hold an FAC when under 17, when I say hold I mean to use, in that getting your firearms and ammunition is tricky and time consuming. As you say your father obtained his FAC to help you out, AJWH doesnt have that to rely on. AJWH does not state whether he has experience other than that with a shotgun, therefore I have to assume he has no experience with a rifle. Whether you agree with mentoring or not, it happens, depending on what police force your in. I dont have it on the

Well done mate, the shotgun still has a place for foxes with the right load and distance, the AAA's get the job done. SS

How quiet can you get a 223?
SportingShooter replied to Mr_Logic's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I shoot my .222 and even though a different calibre, it does make a difference with a mod on it (T8). I have shot it in both states and it makes a discernible difference. Would a Mod with more baffles be of any use, i.e. instead of an 8 perhaps a 12 like the Predator. Just a Thought SS -
Just another thing I might add for future reference, the same law always provides protection for Public Rights of Way, footpaths and bridleways etc, where a gun should not obstruct, cause danger or alarm to users of the public highway, including roads, bridleways, footpaths and other rights of way. Just a thing to think about. SS

Do you intend to eat them :clapper: SS

I would hesitate to give you a specific Weight and shot size as it will provoke all sorts of pointless argument. My advice would be to try a variety of cartridges from 28g to 32g and from shot size 5 to 7. My own personal choice for everything winged is 28g No.7 You just need to find the cartridge that a) kills well for you, b)is comfortable to shoot all day, c) and which gives you the best pattern and performance from your gun and choke combination. I use 3/8 and 1/2 for Pheasant but 1/4 and 1/2 is the most popular and it will deal with anything. Regards SS

what amazes me with this stupid government is that they raised the age to buy an airwapon to 18 but you can be 17 to buy a section 1 firearm or a shotgun! makes alot of sense doesnt it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 Yes it makes an awful lot of sense. To buy an air rifle, you could be anyone , in any state of mind and with nothing to your credit. To buy either a shotgun or a firearm you will have been through a CRB and PNC check with the police, and if you pass and are interviewed by an FEO to ascertain your character. The age limit is of no issue, in my opinion a 15 year old that has passed all

It is difficult to hold an FAC when under 17. It is not difficult to obtain when under 17 but the transfer and purchase of Firearms and Ammunition becomes tricky. Here we go then; 1.You can apply for your FAC now as long as you have a separate safe for them, this is because your dad doesnt hold an FAC and so he cannot have access to the guns or the keys to the cabinet. 2. While under 17 you cannot buy ammuntion or firearms. You could ask another FAC holder to buy them and give them to you as a gift but he would have to have a space for them on his ticket for them, buy it, transfer i

First of all, i hope im included in that statement. I suppose we all try not to make waves, differences of opinion and views on a particular subject occur everywhere and cannot really be avoided. Personally, I enjoy sharing my knowledge and helping others, and I am always grateful to those who acknowledge the replies I post. Thanks to you as well John, you try your best to be diplomatic in issues that arise. Regards SS

Almost all manufacturers make 16 bore shells in lead but I doubt they make them in steel which was the question. I am also thinking of a 16 bore so im on the look out for available ammunition SS

Many a true word is said in jest...............
SportingShooter replied to mackem's topic in General Talk
Unfortunately, never a truer word spoken. The Government needs to get its priorities straight, it makes my blood boil to see recent immigrants being given council houses over British Citizens who have been waiting months or years. This is in no way racist just a fact! SS -
I find them most active just after sunrise, they tend to be out for their morning feed. You may have different results where you are SS

Look for the Dreys and learn to identify them from a Crow or Magpie nest. Then my best advice is to go out about and hour after sunrise and walk through the woods, they should be active, on the branches etc. Blast away to your hearts content, SS

If I were to be specific then I would say , 36g+ of either AAA or BB through a 3/4 Choke. Regards SS

Well, Mutley couldnt stop a pigeon, I think leopards would be a bit much for him. SS

Another vote for the CZ. I have the Varmint 16" barrel with an ASE Utra Mod on it. If the conditions are right, 1/2" groups are easily achievable as well as smaller ones. The finish and wood on mine is superb for a CZ. I have fired the Quad in .22LR and the Ruger 77/17 but I cannot find any discernible difference in accuracy or, if you look at a few guns, the finish. Here is mine when I first had it with no mod or Bi-pod. Regards SS

Well, it sounds like you had a very enjoyable night. One less fox to worry about with a few edible bonuses thrown in. An enjoyable read too. Regards SS

Falling block or similar action rifles
SportingShooter replied to a topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I personally wouldnt feel comfortable shooting a moving target with a rifle. I was just wandering why it is accepted so readily on the continent and not here. The British Sportsman attitude perhaps, Or Irish as the case may be. I have done it many a time with a shotgun, foxes running through the wood or hedgerows. The Wild Boar shooters in France, use this method in most cases I seem to recall. Regards SS -
Falling block or similar action rifles
SportingShooter replied to a topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Yep I know where one hangs on a wall."Oh look you have a Greener Gp ",says I smugly(also thinking meself clever because the owners surname is actually Greener) "No .It's a Henry rifle".I wanted it then and still do even if it is (hopefully :whistling:de-activated) On the Shot-gun subject .A chap used to insist on turning up at the fox-drives with his GP even though he had an over n under at home.Drove the Keeper nuts!"Suppose he misses,Suppose two foxes come through together",he would secretly rant. Well ,Mr Awkward must've heard him because one day he turned up with an old side- b -side.Comp -
I am thinking of sending some shot birds to someone and they will need to be in frozen transportation. Can anyone recommend a company which will do this, they are not for human consumption and so will not be subject to most hygiene law. Thanks SS
