The same is happening here, I cant really prove it but the appearance of Black rabbits about the place is more than enough to clear my mind. I am also sure I have released foxes here, the number of times I have shot foxes with their ribs almost poking through their chest is innumerable. Currently, I have a Golden Eagle circling my patch, now that aint flown from Scotland. SS

Nice going mate, great to get rid of those critters, my crow shooting has only just started, had 48 on Thursday. Only another 1952 to go on average! SS
-
Come on now TG you know ive had a few creatures snuggled in my coat.
-
I agree with your partner TG. No fox would be cuddling up in my coat Got enough tame foxes in the cities as it is, hey thats a thought, every city slicker could take one in and they would stop tearing open rubbish bins. Still prefer to shoot them SS

This year's General Licenses 2008
SportingShooter replied to Coney's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
The protection and destruction of some mammal species is set in various pieces of law. Off hand, the following may be killed at all times if they are considered to be a pest; they include, Fox, Rabbit, Stoat, Weasel, Rat, Mink, Mice(except protected species), and even the Hedgehog if it found to be taking eggs. There may be others but there are no conditions attached to these species such as for the "protection of wild birds", they can be shot because they are a pest species in law. Regards SS -

Many a time I have shot Rabbits in Mid Wales with a Martini Action .22LR. This is a great little gun, with a proper peep sight and is devastating to Rabbits, as well as others, at sensible distances with the open sights. I have also shot a Martini Action, Greener GP many times in 12 bore but thats besides the point. Regards SS -
Advice needed on Crow Shooting
SportingShooter replied to basil's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
It depends on a few things which shot size you stick with, this subject always causes fierce debate but it is a very simple answer to all of the questions. It is what gun and cartridge combination that kills at the ranges you shoot at. Ive found mine to be 28gr No.7 through my trap gun with 1/2 and 5/8 chokes. This combination will drop crows at 60 yards. But it takes a lot of practice to come to this decision. If you find you need 5's,6's or 9's then that is what you should stick with(and yes 9's will kill crows in the right situation but its not advisable to try). Full is very tight fo -
Advice needed on Crow Shooting
SportingShooter replied to basil's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
First of all its night on impossible to predict the size of the groups the crows will come, in. If the enticer brings them in ones and twos, try the pattern without it. You seem to have a good understanding of decoying, it is just that, getting crows to come to your spot rather than go somewhere else. The only thing which you can do is to put your decoys out under a flightline and this should do the job. If you were to invest in more equipment, then a rotary machine with a few dead crows on and set at a slow speed(about 25-28 RPM) will also attract them. I find that when decoying -
Jeff Dunham is truly excellent, John Galway and I are both fans of Ahmed but even more so of Walter. He is one the funniest characters I have come across in a long time. Heres one of Walter's. http://youtube.com/watch?v=1kXOg23pGeA :notworthy: Regards SS

Even though they have just been told to accept informal training by the Home Office and ACPO. The DSC is not required in law, common or statute, and so is not legally required, it the firearms depts thinking they are autonomous and above the law im afraid. .243 is granted to others across the UK, if they hassle you over it, Threaten them with the Human Rights Act, Protocol 12 on Discrimination. Frightens the life out of the Police, the Human Rights Act. SS P.S I have a .222 for foxes but either this, a .223 or .22-250 will do you fine.

If that is the wording on your licence then no. you must check that all land you intend to shoot on has been passed for the weapon. SS
-
My FAC reads the same for both of my rifles. This means that the land you put down on your application form is the only place which you can shoot with the .410 unless you contact your Firearms Dept and ask them if any new land has been cleared for use. I have done this a few times and they have always been helpful and luckily all the land has been passed. Regards SS

Nice one mate, I find it more satisfying shooting Crows than Pigeons. Your shooting will be improving all the time. 20 more crows that wont be adding to the farmers woes. Regards SS

Hi Ditch, Have you actually spoken to the Gardai about this issue. How long ago did you enquire about the Air Pistol? However unlikely, they may have eased or have more experience of this problem. Regards SS
-
Too true he did Ditch, A S&W in .44 Rem Mag. Though he fired .44 Specials through it! I too am envious of you Lev, maybe I could justify one for the despatch of foxes in live catch traps on the shoot. SS
-
Look out TG is about. Happy Birthday, dont go making any special efforts for your friends now, no overdoing things Have a good day, not too many glasses of wine or a conversation will be out of the question. SS

Over here Ditch, There is only one exemption from the ban of pistols. This is for humane despatch. They are held on a firearms certificate and the majority of the .410 shot pistols are old single barrels which have been cut down along with either a pistol grip fitted or the stock cut to the pistol grip. There are many professions which justify the need. Many hunt kennels and terriermen have them for humane despatch of livestock or foxes underground. Deer stalkers can have them for the same reason, if they can prove they need them, such as if he stalks in a forest which is very dense and n

I have a mercury switch in the stock of my Skeet gun. It is a pleasure to shoot, there is very little perceived recoil. Regards SS -

Are you getting commission for this John? I agree it is the best in any decent mans book. SS

I get them when the weather and seasons change and more so in Spring. I take 2 Neurofen and go to bed with the curtains closed in the pitch black. Normally go fairly soon but I have had them for two days before now. SS

I do an awful lot of Crow shooting and there is no doubt the best decoys are dead crows. The best decoys otherwise are flock coated ones, they can be made to bob or can be bought as flappers, a rotary machine is also good but it will need to be turned down to around 25rpm to work on crows. A pattern could be in a horseshoe like pigeon but i find a fairly random pattern the best. Crows will see you a mile off, so you will need to keep perfectly still until it is too late for him, your hide will be the same as a pigeon hide, a net set up against a hedgerow. You can not use electronic callers

Nice one mate, you will always remember it. The .410 is a grand little gun and that Baikal will last you forever. Regards SS

Have a look at the Lincoln range of O/U imported and marketed by Nickerson. They are all new, come with 2 3/4" chambers, the steel shot thing foxed me a bit, I'm not aware of any 16 bore shells, let me know if you have found some, I have fancied one of these for a while. Regards SS

How long has this been in the ground
SportingShooter replied to swanseajack's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Ever tried breaking a Baikal, I wouldnt, might hurt Mine has been at the bottom of a pond twice and it still works flawlessly, but I agree they dont have the reputation as completely flawless guns and I honestly think you have been unlucky or the guns have not been cared for at all. They are all manor of barrel lengths and stock dimensions, made from the metal and wood lying around at the time most probably. They are in essence a rough gun but as long as they are taken care of they are great, it is when people get it into their heads that Baikals are 'unbreakable' that they neglect them an
