I've caught two. The first one was a few years ago in a loft two houses away from the one l caught today. There might be a little local gene pool. They occur in little pockets round here . I see odd ones every year .

They aren't partially rare in my area . Just a little bit rarer after this one and it's normal mates decided to devastate a customer's veg patch.

Yes, l was given strict instructions to slice it into 3/4inch thick steaks and score it part way through in a diamond pattern. Then brine it with a couple of rinses and fresh brine changes for 48 hours . It worked. I remember years ago trying to roast one like a domestic goose. It tasted like what l imagine silage tastes like. Even the dogs wouldn't touch it?

Yes. This lot appeared from nowhere . I think they must've walked across the fields . I successfully "relocated" a pair early in the year .....They didn't go to waste . The other one made a good meal thanks to tips from a customer who is a chef .

I'm not big on fishing in the old closed season but succumbed to the farm pond last night . It's nine feet deep and cold so the tench in it won't start spawning for a few weeks anyway . I slung some groundbait into a swim then wandered off to check the sheep and walk the dog before returning to the pond with my rod . The groundbait had attracted more than fish.Their cuteness rating dropped a bit when they started to show an annoying interest in my float .Sharing their evening meal with a bunch of goosey gate-crashers didn't seem to bother the smaller members of the ocal fish pop

"Reconaissance"sounds so much better than "blanked". I do a lot of reconaissance ?

Back in the 80s my next door neighbour of the time shared some free tickets she had been given to see Rolf Harris's kids' show at our local theatre . We ended up very near the front and to be honest it was a very good show all the children in the audience ,including my daughter, loved it . One thing that struck me was that some of Rolf's jokes were carefully edited versions of stuff he probably used at adults-only performances . Of course the kids didn't realise but some of the parents in the audience did. In fact after one innocent sounding but potentially near the knuckle

I guess you have to be of a certain age to peg it . I shall get my coat.......

A nest on the same shelf in my shed for the 4th year running . I guess there is a reasonable chance that it's the same blackbird every time or one of her offspring . Apart from wedging the door open l carry on using the shed as normal and she doesn't take the blind bit of notice of me crashing about .

? Now here's a thing . I always thought moocher was an American term for a tramp or scavenging begger! Means pretty much the same over here as in someone scrounging stuff for nothing or just hanging about aimlessly. Sneaking about trying to kick up something for a dog to chase is a fairly recent use of the word . It sounds less illegal than casual poaching? Surely the infamous " Minnie The Moocher " was American? She Mooched her way to the top ! ?

"Action plan "and OK let's "enact that" Or customers saying "I've got this guy l 'work with' on this sort of thing ," as in l pay someone to do jobs for me. "But l can't make a 'connection' with him," as in l didn't pay him enough or have peed him off and he's blocked my calls .

Well it wouldn't take a monster pike to swallow a small cygnet . I reckon any pike that's mastered the technique on a regular basis deserves a bit of credit rather than culling though. Anyway there are surely only so many cygnets even a big pike could eat without having to take a rest for digestion . It does sound ,as suggested , that someone is making five out of 2+2 ..... But maybe it's a ruse by a pike Angler hoping to get the fishing rules relaxed and take part in the cull. Or am l a suspicious cynic??

First wasps' nest of the season
comanche replied to comanche's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
It was local job so l only charged the base rate ; no mileage or travel time . Like you ,if l had been given a proper description on the phone l would've suggested they reached for a rolled-up newspaper . Still , l feel less guilty about having to charge her as l had this text from the customer later in the day . l made someone happy !? According to the cycle a manic wasp season was due last year in this area and so it happened. Unfortunately(from a work point of view) l lost a couple of weeks of it due to a holiday that had been carried over from Covid cancellati -
A bit underwhelming really.l did ask how big it was on the phone and they described it as being "At least tennis ball sized" . Felt a bit guilty when l saw it ,but it was a call-out ?

Working collie bitch that fell foul of a stray lurcher.?
-
Go gold; much better return .Bought from a dealer Silver is VAT rated so the price has to rise a lot before you are in profit. Not that l have any of either.?
-
I was erring towards a kelpie/collie type for the next one.

We don't tend to have spare dogs ready to be plucked off the street round my way. Or strays that turn up on the doorstep with serendipity as if they knew there was a vacancy . If we did it might make things easier as my old boy is really showing his age now, kidneys , eyes and ears just starting to go South , and l really don't know how to replace him . Getting a puppy while he's still with me would be like kicking him in the guts . Retirement would be a cruel thing for him. Actually he only really shows his age when he's lounging about the house . He'll sleep all day or slope ab

I've met and passed the time with several well known people Bernard Cribbins, Nigel Havers and Nick Embricos. All chatted with us Beaters at a Shoot. I had met the latter before and also met ,mucked out on a couple of occasions , his Grand- National winning horse Aldaniti. Did a wasps' nest for Joan Plowright ,many nests for Norman Tebbit and his truly lovely wife , several for Wayne Fontana ,one for Rick Parfitt. Met Oliver Reed twice. The first time he was alone in a pub and was charm personified to our group . The second time was about a week later and he was like a schoo

One thing that strikes me is that the trap in the picture doesn't have an underfloor bait tray clipped to the base . I would think that rats would scrabble under the trap rather than enter it. Whereas with a metal tray underneath they would have to enter the trap to reach the corn through the wire floor.
-
Never used a rat one but l have used a Fuller "Family"squirrel trap and a copy- cat one l made myself. Results varied ; on the odd occasion l had two or three squirrels in the same trap -littermates l suspect- but l think aggression and dominance may have limited the number prepared to enter en masse. I had better results using single catch traps with a bit of space between them. Also the multi catch traps required a lot of bait to fill the bait tray underneath the cage . Far more economical to use single traps l think. But just because l didn't get on with multi catch ca

My Grandaughter knitted me a Ferret for my Birthday! She had better hurry with the crochet coney or it will starve.
