Let's See Your Phone Shots !!
comanche replied to mattybugeye's topic in Wildlife and General Photography
Bit of a fiddle getting the phone out my pocket and using it with one hand but the butterfly had the decency to sit-still long enough for one photo. -
Thanks Phil. This means of course that l now have two " Old Man's Dogs"

I've had a new puppy for a couple weeks and realised last night that l needed to register its micro chip in my name. Imagine a monkey playing the piano but l finally worked out how to do it online. There was a section on the form for me to add it's Instagram profile!!!! I skipped it of course . Don't want the little dog spending all day on the internet.

Well it was mostly electric fence tape but also a bit of straining wire and sticks. He could of gone through a horse paddock or jumped a fence and ended up in a tangle. I know red stags deliberately gather debris and branches on their antlers during the rut but have no idea if fallow bucks do the same. It's a good job it didn't get into a sparring match with another buck. It would've been like a scene from the Defiant Ones.

Bit of a sad one this evening. Anything in season is fair game on this permission, except the white fallow . This poor chap was obviously an allowable exception.

They seem to be called " Shop door bells" and there seem to be plenty on sale from expensive vintage ones down to these cheaper modern ones. Any good?

I could be wrong but l think shock collars are going to be banned early next year,,but obviously there are quite a few already in private hands..... Treat vs chasing a cow isn't much of an incentive for a dog to come back. In fact get it wrong and the dog might start to associate getting a treat as a reward for chasing a cow then go back for another go! Why was it let off the lead before it was stock trained or had a good recall ? S'pect we've all been there with our first dogs though ..... Back to basics ,dog on the lead, training to heel , the word "No" and lots of -possi

Interesting A minor contributing reason could also be that fishermen were more likely to be coming into port with their catch than leaving port. They considered it bad luck to sail on a Friday.

It was , if l recall he had caught in a pond then floated it in a bath with river water flowing through it to cleanse it . Illegal but no one noticed . Then the river flooded and it escaped

I spent some time chatting to a Romanian angler who was fishing near me a few years ago. He showed me photographs of him and his relatives standing with maybe 20 carp that they had caught for a big family BBQ. Apparently they fish sections of dammed rivers . These places are maintained rather like our put and take trout fisheries . You pay a fee to fish and are allowed to keep your catch. On the subject of eating a uk carp a polite version of his answer would be " No way. They are fed on shxxx and swim in their shxxx and would taste like shxxx "

Fireman ,there were actually three "Fish Days " a week during much of the Mediaeval Period. And that didn't include special religious holidays . Most of the fish eaten was salted or smoked sea fish. Herring were pretty much a currency in their own right . Oysters were poor man's food and there were so many salmon in many rivers that they too were considered peasant fare. You are right though about the stews . They were for the rich . Providing pike and bream for a feast or gifting breeding stock to friends was the mark of a rich man or thriving religious orde

Not seen the video but aren't there three people in the car? Who's in the back with the camera?

So someone cuts down a non-native tree; just one of millions of its species . Except this one tree grew in a picturesque location and has a claim to fame in that it had a non-speaking role in a film about a probably fictional British person who was portrayed by an American . The fuss does seem a wee bit contrived. It's a shame for those who claim an emotional or artistic link to the tree but seen in a cold light you are right Qbgrey .Not a big crime. If the rumours about it being the work of disgruntled employee or farmer are true then it was a pretty neat bit of re

First wasps' nest of the season
comanche replied to comanche's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
It's strange down here at the other end of the country. There don't seem to be many wasps out and about compared to some years. Then again the Season came into swing a couple of weeks later than usual . Yet there have been so many nests l've broken my record for the number treated in a day several times . Multiple nests in one house were the norm until the last couple of weeks . I thought eight in a tiny bungalow was going some but then l did a house with thirteen! If only the number of nests treated equalled the number of call outs. This one nearly caught me out. I'd go -
Your other half stealing it is a positive thing. It's a lot better than her saying " We have a wedding to pay for and you've come home with another gun!"
