Catching up ducks
comanche replied to DIDO.1's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
The best duck catchers l used when l was a Keeper were made from partridge pen sections. Someone has already mentioned using them. Obviously you could stake out a rectangle or horseshoe of wire if you haven't any pen sections ; the bigger the better to give the duck confidence to enter en-mass. Top view. Obviously it needs a roof of netting or pen sections to stop them flying outStart off leaving the front open and feeding inside the enclosure for several days . Then push the "wings" inward so they form a funnel. You can get a lot of ducks in one go if it goes well. Open the wing -
I don't know about the Napoleonic rifles being single shot but a lot of the big bore air rifles in the 19th century were actually repeaters; capable of 20 or more shots . The big advantage of them was that they negated the need to keep gunpowder dry .

Oh dear. I was thinking more Eddie from Iron Maiden ,,,,but now you mention it

All went well , seemingly no kids permanently traumatised this year and the perfect excuse to play an appropriate Black Sabbath LP full blast out the window.Even the neighbour's alsatian came over to join the fun .

I sit in the front garden for an hour or so and play the game. Most of the kids that appear live in my street and come with a parent. When threatened with " Trick or treat" demands l sometimes say l'd rather have a trick. It really throws them. One day l'll come unstuck and fall victim to a four year old with a concealed weapon .

Married with Children was gem. They must've had an English scriptwriter; who else would've called one of the main characters Peggy Wanker- Bundy ? I bet the American audience had no idea

No, Lem . The sick joke is a perfectly legitimate comedy genre. Usually best told between mates over a pint or with a snigger in private. Matthew Perry doesn't seem to have been able to cope with money or fame and messed up . Maybe he would've messed up his life even if he hadn't had been rich and famous but being well paid in a very popular TV show gave him the chance to do it in a very public way . What is true is that ,love it or not, the show he was in entertained millions of people and unlike some of the nasty bits of work who are posthumously ripped to shreads on RIP threa

No , someone who isn't a childish wanker.

Yes. Mum used to hollow out a swede . I carried on the tradition and always cringed when my little daughter wanted to have a go at making one of her own. The compromise was that l did the hollowing-out and she cut the features. Luckily she still has all her digits. Never even saw pumpkins in the shops round here. Folk moan about the the trick or treat thing but there seems to be an unspoken rule , in my area at least , that the T&Ters only bother houses with lanterns and decorations on display. And most of the children round here are chaparoned by parents . Bonfire nigh

No hares in my area.... The brown one went after one when l was somewhere else but l called him off as it was "possible " we may have been "accidentally straying" and were a bit public. I doubt he'd have caught it anyway unless it stopped to laugh at him. Ironically the dogs that mangled my black and white dog belonged to a guy that was big in the Lurcher obedience world.....

I've got an elderly one now. Mum a working collie ,father a stray lurcher. And this one, sadly missed, had a lurcher Dad and a collie Mum. Possibly a few fruit-bat genes as well judging by his ears. He never did grow into them He was 13 in this picture and those who can count will notice that thanks to an attack by a pack of loose dogs he was a leg short of a full set for the last couple of years of his life. Still good enough for ferreting though ! I think catching hares would've been a bit optimistic even when they were both in their prime and could muster a full set

I bet she would've rather been out with you than left at home. They age even quicker when they get left behind. Though sadly the day does come.... Good on you for giving her a bit of interest in her old age.

Painfully true, especially for a weedy bloke of advancing years like me Roll-on doe Season

Apart from culling a fallow buck with wire round it's antlers my last few outings had proved frustrating. I had seen quite a few roe and fallow in a neighbour's field but whenever they ventured onto my permission it seemed that either, time , failing light or the wind was against me. I s'pose l could've tried an approach but decided to leave them undisturbed and unaware of my observation rather than educate them. Yesterday I got it right ; l was in a position on a tree-lined bank near a point where they were likely to appear and the wind was at last in my favour. Three roe

Let's See Your Phone Shots !!
comanche replied to mattybugeye's topic in Wildlife and General Photography
Bit of a fiddle getting the phone out my pocket and using it with one hand but the butterfly had the decency to sit-still long enough for one photo. -
Thanks Phil. This means of course that l now have two " Old Man's Dogs"

I've had a new puppy for a couple weeks and realised last night that l needed to register its micro chip in my name. Imagine a monkey playing the piano but l finally worked out how to do it online. There was a section on the form for me to add it's Instagram profile!!!! I skipped it of course . Don't want the little dog spending all day on the internet.

Well it was mostly electric fence tape but also a bit of straining wire and sticks. He could of gone through a horse paddock or jumped a fence and ended up in a tangle. I know red stags deliberately gather debris and branches on their antlers during the rut but have no idea if fallow bucks do the same. It's a good job it didn't get into a sparring match with another buck. It would've been like a scene from the Defiant Ones.

Bit of a sad one this evening. Anything in season is fair game on this permission, except the white fallow . This poor chap was obviously an allowable exception.

They seem to be called " Shop door bells" and there seem to be plenty on sale from expensive vintage ones down to these cheaper modern ones. Any good?

I could be wrong but l think shock collars are going to be banned early next year,,but obviously there are quite a few already in private hands..... Treat vs chasing a cow isn't much of an incentive for a dog to come back. In fact get it wrong and the dog might start to associate getting a treat as a reward for chasing a cow then go back for another go! Why was it let off the lead before it was stock trained or had a good recall ? S'pect we've all been there with our first dogs though ..... Back to basics ,dog on the lead, training to heel , the word "No" and lots of -possi
