  1. Out first light this morning for a look around a small farm .Tried a spot i rarely go to as for some reason known only to the deer ,they dont really like it .Some good cover and browse and peaceful but i only ever see the odd one . Round a corner of a hedge and saw the tell tale shape of a deers head in the hedge .No need for bins as it was no more than 70 -75 yards away .She clocked me and was staring intently at my shape .I inched the rifle to my shoulder and shot her off un-opened sticks in the head .Bit of a drag but then again no pain no gain .I will dress this out for a few landowners a
  2. If its who im thinking of then your right about the stories ..........and the stories.............oh and another story before you go .His breeding has gone astray ,lost it and im afraid he clings to the past a bit .But the stories are still there .................oh and did i tell you about the time . Spannable comes into its own in rock as some of the lads will tell you but in earth ,if the dog wants on you just have to give him time .
  3. Nice one mate .Do you wear sunglasses in that room though
  4. Yes mate .Get yourself well soon . Just as a footnote to my post, that fox was covered in ticks of the big blue variety .
  5. Went to farm i do early this evening where fox control is as important as feeding the stock .Phoned around for mates to join me but they all had excuses so i tried a lad that had been wanting to go out for a while and who talked a good night out by what hes shot in the past .He was up for it so we met at the farm entrance .Lamped the usual spots but nothing and fog was gradually decending on us .I decided on a squeak by the hen houses and chose a spot by a hedge that borders a tarmac lane .Part way through the calling ,as i paused for breath,i heard the click of a claw on the lane behind u
  6. Good write up there mate and yes she was a cull beast .Had a chap go into great detail about what he considered to be a cull doe recently but the strange thing was that when i took him out he shot a knobber buck off the sticks at 40 yards .If i wasnt so amused i would have bollocked the twat .
  7. The setup is a standard tikka T3 lite ,243,in stainless with a 7x56 meopta scope .100 grain bullets .I guess ive just got to know the combination mate .The hold over is not something i consiously think about but i must do it as the drop is something that we cant avoid. The consistancy you speak of made me smile as ive only recently been pushing the ranges but it seems to be working .Practice mate then practice some more . Edited to say that ive not found the need for a scope with a zoom ,id rather it was seen at the range it really is than bring it in to just infront your nose
  8. Just to make light of it ,the trouble with cattle shooting is that you need a brace of them to make them hang right on your shoulder and this lad never did the double so left it . I jest of course -Hope this gets sorted mate and hope you you still have some land left to take me on ,jesting again of couse .Ill ring you.
  9. Nice one mate .A well sited seat too.I take it thats in the Borders somewhere ,just a guess.
  10. Yes mate .It was a talking point as i gralloched them.
  11. Invited myself up to a good mate of mines for the weekend and had a days hunting combined with a mornings stalk. As per usual ,the sport was exceptional.Saturday was an action packed day of trail hunting with some superb hound work and terrierwork to make the day memerable .Sunday we were up and out early to a place where my mate has the enviable job of controlling the numbers of chinese water deer .The weather overnight had chilled somewhat and a fine layer of snow covered the ground ,combined with a very keen north wind .The cwd is a species i have never even seen let alone shot . I had i

  13. Good to get out mate and those scenes are truly breathtaking .Memories
  14. Glad to hear you had a good conclusion mate .Happened to me more than once but you have to trust your gut feeling about the shot being good .I remember once ,a chap phoning me for my dog to trail a deer he thought he hit late in the evening and saw run off two fields into some maize cover crop , but the dog found the doe he'd hit ,dead ,and not more than 10 yds from the spot but in deep stingers .
  15. A mate of mine has a quad which we have done up a bit to allow comfortable lamping .Good padded seat for passenger ,hand warmers and rifle/shotgun carrier .Went out last night on some of his ground .Very wet but the 4wd took it all in its stride .Shot a few rabbits for the ferrets and a small vixen which i called a long ,long way ,up to a good half mile id say .Saw the eyes way off as just a tiny speck but followed her down the valley and up to us where my mate shot it with the .22 .On the way back down a lane we had a head on with a badger which survived the full weight of us and quad and am
  16. Any decent gun shop will stock them mate ,plus you get to se what you are buying .Around £ for the fully adjustable one .
  17. Nice one mate .Ill swap you some roe does for a fallow stalk ?
  18. Having loaded for some big names myself , honest ,and shot the same birds at the end of season beaters day and i just have this to say .Its a real eye opener watching someone who is full time at the shooting game hitting bird after bird with the ease that only comes from complete mastery of the art .Double gun days were the norm with one particular chap regularly having 3 birds dead in the air .
  19. I know people like that are annoying but i tend not to give them a second thought as they wont be spoiling my day .
  20. The slope i crawled up to get the shots is in the forground with a nice patch of cover behind that holds deer all year round .A good mix of browse .
  21. The last of my free time for a while so a look around one of my closer permissions .Farmer asked me to avoid the pheasant feeders as theres a lot of birds about so i went to the other end by the main road .Stalked carefully along a slope towards the boundary and stopped to glass often as it was a bit misty .Glassed along a hedge and had to do a double take on what looked for all the world like a spiders web but was in fact a roe sat down looking at me in the hedge .The cream chin was what made me look again .Crept forward under her watchful gaze and made out two more sat eirher side of her .B
