  2. Had a call from a farmer mate to say that there were loads of fox tracks around his free range sheds and that could i have a look out sometime so tonight i made the effot ,i effort it was ,to have a look .The first shed is situated on a bend in the lane leading to the farm and as i drove up in the snow i caught the eye of charlie around the shed .Parked just up a bit and silently got the kit together .Crept back and had a look around the gatepost .There he was about 20 yds out in the field and very conspicuous without the lamp against the snow .He ran as expected so i flicked the lamp on and s
  3. First place we pulled in at is just a small farm with maybe 100 acres but theres always deer here drawn by the crops grown here pretty intensively .Just turned the corner by the barn when i spotted a doe couched under a hedge and just over the 100 yd mark .She was gazing out over a field towards a wood and probably more deer.My mate crawled to a tump for a better view and head shot her off the bipod with his new .243.Paced the shot at 120 as i forgot the ranger .The gralloch stood out a mile on the snow and as we dragged the carcass back ,the first crow landed nearby to peck at it .Certainly d

  10. It will be interesting to track his progress through your pics mate .Ive tried to follow the progress of a few before but with a high population its very hard to say for certain that your studying the same one year after year .I have my eye on a very large head this year that has finally given me leave to shoot it as the bucks definately blind in one eye .Will remain to be seen if its mine or not .Possible 7-9 pointer .

  16. Well done Local mate .Good to achieve what you set out to do ,gives you a sense of immortality I have to take an inforced break at the moment due to having my right eye done ,cateract removed ,but i believe theres a few does with my name on them before the seasons out .Cant wait to be honest .
  17. Mate ,any idea on the approx age of that buck .I have my own guess just wondered if it tied in with yours . Just to add a thing or two about antler growth .The actual growth of the antler is regulated by the amount of testosterone in a bucks body.Normal levels of the hormone found in a buck during winter ,allows the steady growth of antler .As the amount of daylight increases so does the testosterone increase until it reaches a peak in the rut .Its the increase in this hormone that stops antler growth .Bucks that have for some reason been castrated ,produce no testosterone and therefore th

  19. good going mick. thats a nice sized vixen , would it not be better if fox cage traps were made a bit higher so that the fox could walk straight in and feel more confident upon entering the trap , by increasing the kill area on snare loops they become far more deadly and cut out the usual problem of avoidance , providing that they are set at the proper height in correlation to the loop size , not setting them at the best practice height like the dumplings suggest. Not wishing to pull anyone up snareman but that trap is not a fox trap but one used by the ministry for the black and white th
  20. If its pure pest control then there is no season .Ferret ,lamp and shoot throughout the summer .Buy a chest freezer and freeze down the best to sell in bulk .50 rabbits used to be the best way to ensure a good price from a dealer .More and they say its too many at once ,less and its never enough to bother with .Charge him what you are happy with no matter what others say ,its you whos doing it .You know it makes sense .
  21. Yes mate ,and i had assured him that we would get a fox too .Might not hear from him again but hey ,plenty more land to go at .
  22. May have found it .The plastic screw in grommet which fits into the t8 and sleeves the barrel was loose .Would this throw shot wild? How do i prevent this again ?Its caused a bright area on the barrel so was obviously vibrating .
  23. The buttalo is capable of producing every call made by a roe doe .The doe calls when she is in oestrus to attract a buck .This can be very subtle or quite loud ,depending on the deer density i think .A few feeeeps will do with a break then call again ,repeat .Do not call constantly as this is most unnatural .The doe commands a small territory in late summer ,again depending on density .The bucks ,according to status have a much larger territory and service many does within it .Its this call that we mostly use to attract a buck .I have heard a doe calling many times and also seen and heard the
