rat invasion again
Squirrel_Basher replied to Squirrel_Basher's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Caught this today and a first for me .The rat was unfortunately caught in a fenn mk 4 by the door but by his foot only and then dragged the fenn to another trap ,a mk 6 fenn and was killed as he sprang this one .The traps are 2m apart along the wall . -
The same you say to your men ive heard .

Got nothing to do with socialising mate .

Opinions will differ from stalker to stalker depending on the aim of the cull and the experience of the man.Where numbers are a problem ,such as around us in the South ,the doe is taken first when numbers are needed, with a good chance of bagging all kids .Obviously the doe isnt shot until the kids are well up .Where deer are not just a pest then it is considered propper to take the weakest kid ,followed by the other kid if there is one and it stands . Each to their own as long as the welfare is foremost id say .The newcomer is ,however usually advised best practice which is kids first .

One of our neighbours has been getting annoyed with a squirrel that runs our back fence and destroyng a bird feeder he has out so i sent my boy around with the ratcatcher yesterday afternoon with orders of not to shoot over the fence and not to come back without it !It follows a regular routine in the day .First light and mid afternoon feeding .Wasnt long before back he comes with a huge smile and his prize dangling by its tail. Im damned today if there aint another on the fence.

Tikka T3 Lite Stainless Steel
Squirrel_Basher replied to Irnbruster's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Word of warning .............................. I bought the t3 lite in .243 a couple of years ago and like you do i swapped the scope from my much used .222 to the .243 as soon as i got home ,adding a harris bipod to the setup with a veiw to getting out and zeroing that afternoon .The forend stud pulled out with the pressure from the bipod screw and the rifle fell off the sling dumping the £350 scope on the floor shattering the lens .I took it all back to the gunshop and after a lot of dithering the owner decided to send it back to tikka .They replaced the forend stud with a screw/bolt and s -
Do you regularly catch blacks as well as brown mate .Im thinking its a brown mutation rather than a black rat!

Does anyone know of any goats around the Inverness area as a couple of us are stalking up that way in the new year and want to combine a trip ?.

Out with Martin last night down at his place on the foxes .Very windy night ,ideal for running a lurcher on rabbits but not in my experience ,very good for charlie .Martin took us to a very exposed place to start with but after a few squeaks ,we both agreed it wasnt going to happen so a move as in order to the market garden which is on a hill side flanked by woods all round and what a difference ,no wind to speak of at all .The landowner here has a large flock of laying hens so fox control is just one of the tasks Martin has undertaken .After having a good call in the most likely place we move

Yes mate .The look on his face when he pulls off a decent shot makes me a very proud dad .

Secret breed history????
Squirrel_Basher replied to madgerboy's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
The other side of the coin is that lads are just plain wary of strangers ,i know i am .Lies and exagerations flow from one to another these days so why give fuel and more speculation to them .The only people entitled to a truthful insight are those that have proven themselves after time served on the shovel ,not just a bloke at the door . Those giving the ancestry of a boughten terrier are very loose lipped in my experience and many blatently having nothing of the sort in their yard ,they are to be steered away from . -
Well done to you mate .

Took a walk around a farm building i have with a view to taking out the few remaining ferals that are left as the farmer has been to a talk by the farm assured people which included a list of the worst vermin on a farm and these ferals ranked second only to rats! Hes always allowed a pair of white doves but they've had to go now as well as the blue bars.Tried the big covered yard first and the boy shot a brace from the rafters with his new rws umarex in .22.Then it was into another shed nearby and we spooked one of a pair of whites which flew off into the night but the other was accounted for

rat invasion again
Squirrel_Basher replied to Squirrel_Basher's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
To be perfectly honest mate ,im not at all bothered by it and use the rats as a reason to run a few traps all year .If at any time they get out of control i shall think about rat proofing but until then its happy trapping . -
New estate in midlands coming up
Squirrel_Basher replied to Wings1981's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
At the end of the day its only a little over a mans wages to cover for the time spent with a client and not many keepers /stalkers earn more than £60 for 3 hours. The venison price is what you need to look for in getting the best from a dealer before they are shot and not from the man shooting it ,ensuring all who stalk can place a shot before going out . Tell you what ,invite me up,hinds unlimited, and i'll do you a review ,cant say fairer than that can i . -

Friday evening saw me down at a farm near me where the farmer has a zero telerance of anything not bovine .Naturally i have to use a bit of commen and shoot whats in season but still please the man .During my phone call to him earlier on in the evening he was adament that there were too many deer but trying to explain that the does wernt in season yet fell on deaf ears so a concerted effort was put in to at least down a beast and stay within the law .There are two farms here back to back and i have the shooting on both .A circuit of the other farm revealed does only but no pressure here as he
