Lamb Killer
Squirrel_Basher replied to 6pointer's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Got to be done mate and a decent shot there too.Doubtful if thats the killer though ,more likely a vixen this time of year and best of luck with her .We are flat out on calls ,never had it so busy and found more foxes to ground in this warm weather than ever before but not complaining mind .Nice set up there too. -

Travelled down to deepest Somerset for a chance to stalk in some very picturesque landscape ,the permission of local off the site .Ive been here before so knew the general layout but not having shot a buck here yet ,this evening was one to remember .We started on the higher ground from where a perfect view of the lower fields can be had .Saw nothing on the higher ground but Local ,having the knowledge of the place ,spotted a buck and doe feeding along a hedge in one of the many patchwork fields below us and a plan was made to get in a bit closer .This involved backtracking to the farm and comi

This mornings effort
Squirrel_Basher replied to Squirrel_Basher's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
About 5yds mate .Then they both got wind and bolted -
Up at 5 am for the drive to one of my furthest spots .Heavy morning mist meant a cloaked arrival at my chosen spot for a sit .The farmer here has been on to me about the deer even though i shoot on sight in season here it seems there is a ready supply next door to fill the slightest void created by me but im not complaining ,who would .Sat under a tree in the mist and watched the sun come up and the first efforts for it to burn the mist away .Pheasants landed noisely somewhere in the field and a trio of hares passed by very close ,close enough for me to see the eyes clearly . An hour passed

Out with Martin last night at a place he has where he does the fox control to a high standard.Since taking it on 2 years ago the farmer has lost no new borns outside which is a credit to Martin and the farmer for his farming methods .We had a look with the lamp although it was a bright and still night but good job we did really as a pair of foxes had moved in to the lambing fields .lambs are well up now but not entirely out the woods as far as predation goes.Insde the first gate ,lamp on ,a squeak ad a pair of eyes to our left that disappeard straight away, only to reappear in front of us and

A sobering start to the buck season
Squirrel_Basher replied to Yokel Matt's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Think you have the answer mate .Ive seen this quite often to be honest but never took much notice as they are never inflamed or pus like .Definately the right thing to do Local mate . -

Last Tuesday evening saw me at a spot ive had for fox control around organic chicken sheds and the farmer by way of thanks, has asked me to cull a few deer as the numbers are well up due to the cropping this year and the amount of rape grown next door .Four big fields surrounded by thick hedges and a pond in the middle ,perfect.Walked around the first field right handed to get the wind right and crossed the ditch into a big field where i knew the deer would be.Couldnt see anything from the first glass but as the corn is now a bit long i didnt expect to straight away .Moving up the hedge i gl

Bet you wished you'd left him to clean mate Probably a medal if it was clean was but id say the chance has gone now .Live and learn though eh Only joking mate ,if in your shoes i'd of had it too .

Your points are noted and realized but the reason for the no shooting is to observe and i know from experience that once your the trust is gone they never return to the same passive state .I have enough areas to shoot on without disturbing this one .

Its not all about pulling the trigger ,how many times do i have to say this

Heres a couple of pics from a small patch ive just aquired but the deer are very tame having been used to horse riders and people in general .To be honest i will probably use it to watch deer rather than shoot them as it would be a shame to undo this trust for the sake of a bullet . The first deer i came across let me get to within 40 yds before sauntering off . This old doe let me walk right up to her and i retreated with her still sat .Very priveliged to be so close to be honest.Saw a munty too but he wasnt so obliging.

MOUSIES LINES OF LAKELANDS
Squirrel_Basher replied to BULLX RUNNER's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Personally dug to a few of these dogs and was satisfactory but no more than that or no less .They couldnt find in a big place though when another type did but thats just based on a few outings and not a season .Dogs looked good ,hard bodied and good coated . -
If this lad is truly looking for advice and i have my doubts then its been overlooked that the law classes anywhere inhabited by a badger as an occupied sette and as such you are disturbing a sette by digging ,moving or entering a dog .This includes an artificial earth ,stack of bales ,pile of logs or tires and anywhere else a badger will inhabit from time to time .Even for a time served lad the chances are he will find one in an unlikely place and then your in the hands of the gods.A terrier that only marks fox is a great asset .

Farmer phoned to say he was putting lambs out last weekend and could we have a look in the usual places for a vixen to ground that he'd seen previous in the area .The earth we finally found in is a sprawling place of 50 odd holes ,shallow but part rabbity ,ideal for a vixen and cubs . Fresh digging and scrapes greeted us in this place that boosted morale straight away as we'd traipsed the land all morning looking for a mark in some deep old places. This earth has been good to us over the years but has been dead since boxing day .Mates rough coated pat marked at both ends of the earth before

Lamping last night with the wife on the lamp .Weve tried all week to get a fox for my boy whos put in a lot of time on paper targets with the .243 as well as every night up until 9.30pm as he has school .Seen a lot of foxes but nothing for a starter shot if you know what i mean .Last night he decided to stay in on the playstation, the other passion of his but the wife wanted to go out anyway as shes got the bug too .Went to a place that produes the odd fox and damn me if one didnt come screaming in from at least 1/4 a mile away.Ran all the way ,over a stream and through a flooded field to arr
