  3. Your like me Stubby.........a soft touch where ferrets are concerned.......once there in your blood mate it is hard to turn one away.......i know i have tried many times........always end up taking them though. Rolfe.
  4. Happy Birthday Mate...............have a good one Rolfe.
  5. LOL. Rolfe, do you use the run through cages also? You know the ones which are open both ends? Or are they all single door affairs? H No.........all my cages are single entry ones...........I run 30-40 at a time on my contracts if the rabbit numbers warrant it. I have never had problem with rabbits entering a cage that has a closed end........providing it is sited it the right location of course.
  6. Any tips on doing this safely Rolfe? I tried last year when the maize was being harvested, using a slip, so that I could decide which ones to run. The rabbits were so disorientated that they couldn' t remember which way was home and ended up running back into the crop. Dogs tend to get confused in the crop too: after doing the hundred metre dash to get myself between my dog and the on coming harvester to which she was retrieving her rabbit , I called it a day. Certainly exciting sport, but will wait until the machines have gone this year.... Good point you make there.........Yes safe
  7. Cheers Fell............and all the other nice comments
  8. Thanks SJM........Yeah.....Nothing (well maybe one thing ) beats the adrenalin rush of seeing a youngster catch his first rabbit single-handed. And harvest time is the best time to do it in my opinion as the rabbits are usually far enough from home to give the young dog a fair chance........! Rolfe.
  9. My favourite time of the year has just started in some parts.......here it is 2 weeks until the rape is cut. But I will start getting the dogs back up to tip-top condition after the summer lay -off ready for some serious rabbiting action. Nothing nicer than a hot summers afternoon standing in the shade of some tree........waiting for the rabbits to bolt from in front of the combine and head for home.....only to have their dash for freedom curtailed by some crafty lurcher. I usually have plenty of shade and water for the dogs as it can be pretty arduous at times.........but I also make sure I h
  10. It was placed in one direction to catch them coming into the garden........then turned around the other way for a time. i caught most entering the garden........... would have placed two cages back to back.........but space was tight.
  11. Always use Express 30g 6's pigeon specials when decoying and roost shooting............best cartridge for decoying pigeons in my opinion. Also it is a good load for bowling the bunnies over at harvest time. Consistantly good all round load. Rolfe
  12. I always understood that the name derived from Charles James Fox......1749-1806 the notorious MP who was a noted gambler and huntsman of that period. Rolfe.
  13. Well you already have the evidence H..... in the vole latrines and feeding stations. My instinct would be to stake out the feeding stations for a few hours.....varing the times throughout the day. Early evening is always a good time though. Rat activity is usually (though not always) higher up the bank from the waters edge than that of the vole, and the runs have a far more "greasy" appearance than those of the vole. Also.......if it is very wet........look for signs of "tail-drag" behind any footprints you may observe........this will tell you if it is rat or vole. Could you not try and cag
  14. Yep.............7.5% on the bottle.
  15. Got to be........."Old Peculiar"..........7.5% of pure heaven.
  16. what were you using as bait? Yes.........look closely and you will see the carrots i used as bait.........this was early on...........later i didn't use any bait at all
  17. Another example of exploiting rabbits habits. In this garden the rabbits always ran along the side of the garage to escape and enter the garden area. By placing a cage on the run alongside the wall I was able to catch 14 rabbits from the one spot. Although I started with bait in the cages.........after a while I didn't bother as the cage had become so well scented by the previous occupants........that, that was all that was needed to entice them in.
  18. This brings back happy memories .......it was in the charts when by daughter was born and it always reminds me of her. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrhxTDAw3qs
