  1. My old dad knew the exact date and time of his death.................The Judge Told Him. Seriously............As long as I had told my nearest and dearest how much i loved them and all arrangements had been made for the care of my animals.............Then i would love to go on a wild and windy night in some remote place struggling to carry the 100 rabbits i had just taken in the long net.........wonderful. Rolfe.

    hatching at last

Must be fantastic to see the result of all your hard work Tracey......so now you know what you are in for next season. I hope you get a good hatching percentage from the eggs and that they all survive into healthy poults....BUT........you must resist helping the wee little things out of their shells..........they can manage quite well on their own. Take Care Rolfe.
  3. A man and his wife were awakened at 3:00 am by a loud pounding on the door. The man gets up and goes to the door where a drunken stranger, standing in the pouring rain, is asking for a push. "Not a chance," says the husband, "it is 3:00 in the morning!" He slams the door and returns to bed. "Who was that?" asked his wife. "Just some drunk guy asking for a push," he answers "Did you help him?" she asks. "No, I did not, it is 3:00 in the morning and it is pouring rain out there!" "Well, you have a short memory," says his wife. "Can't you remember about three mont

    Be honest!!

    0%........look at the bar.........
  5. Tommo.........if the soil is extremely sandy in texture then i do sometimes fill in around the traps........but mostly i just fill the centre of the ring with soil if i can........ to give the mole the impression it has come across a tunnel collapse. The problem with the standard scissor type trap is they are nowhere near as powerful as the Talpex which slices through the back filled soil with ease........if the soil is a clay type......i can see this hampering the standard scissor action. Rolfe.
  6. Think they are called Dryads Saddle or something like that........and young speicimins are edible as far as i know. But always check and identify first......!

    Be honest!!

OOOhhhh I'm ever such a good lass 0% for meeeeeeeeeeeeeeee and i am addicted to Big Brother Well thats worth a lifetime ban Tess..........BB.....how sad can you get
  8. Good luck Steve.........keep the Tongue about 20 mm from the base of the run.......and loosely fill with soil as we have discussed. Just make sure there is enough room for the pin to fire unrestricted. I am expecting a good result so don't let me down. Rolfe.
  9. How facinating........a miriad of all colours in that one.............they must be breeding ok to see so many about. Nice picture...........! Rolfe.
  10. Nice one........! Been bitten twice by crazy squirrels.............and your'e right..........it is more powerful than a rat bite. and painful too.
  11. Neil.........if only life were so simple . In roof spaces with well developed kits, they disperse throughout the roof even if you can locate the nest, so knowing just how many are present is a problem. When they are tiny its different as you will find them all tucked up at home in the nest. Usually the well developed kits scatter everywhere the moment you disturb the nest-site. As a matter of interest the most young i have ever removed from a roof was 8. Also on a serious note........be careful if trying to sort a nest of young and they are using the alarm call..........the mother will rush t
  12. Just been removing squirrels from roof-spaces again. It is always a problem to estimate how many young may running about inside. The female is usually the first to be caught in a cage in the roof.......or garden. By examining her teats it is possible to get a rough idea how many kits she is feeding.......it isn't always 100% accurate but it does give you some idea how many young are about. The one in the picture was suckling 4/5 kits in my estimation.......i removed 4 youngsters from the roof.
  13. Thats sad LL to hear about Mick...........does or did anyone continue his line of breeding do you know.?
  14. It's the old story Malt.........there are not many bad dogs............but plenty of bad owners out there......some times you have to say it as you see it mate..........I for one never hold back.........THEY GET IT BOTH BARRELS...if someone pisses me off enough. Don't lose sleep over it mate you did the right thing. Rolfe.
  15. Well the beauty of filling in all around the traps is that the mole doesn't come across any part of the exposed trap so weathering becomes irrelevant up to a point. If you are catching too far back..........this needs to be adressed for humane reasons..........try keeping the tongue nearer to the bottom of the run......because the mole is getting to far under the trap before triggering it. Rolfe.
  16. Checked the mole traps this morning and had 8 moles in 8 traps.........a full house. It doesn't often happen that everyone catches but when they do it is an added bonus. Its like snaring............in theory they all should catch but in reality it seldom happens. The trapping bag gets a bit heavy after a while though..........try carrying 40 Talpex around a 36 acre field..........who said this mole catching lark was easy money
  17. I had that carpel tunnel in my right wrist for ages............it started after being handcuffed for a time........i wont go into details Anyway..........it was that bad that my thumb and forefinger were permanently numb. In the end it was suggested i had the operation to relieve the pressure on the sheath in the wrist that the nerves pass through as in the standard operation. I had too much work on at the time..........needing my hands for trapping etc. so i declined the op and decided to put up with it. Lo and behold...........within 6 months the problem went away on its own accord and i h
  18. Cheers OTC..........i pick up a lot of scissor traps in my travels..........but had never found one that was so light! Rolfe.
  19. Just picked up a common type scissor trap..........but this one is made from a very light base metal...Aliminium? Just wondered what make it was etc...........Perhaps OTC can identify it for me.........or anyone else of course
  20. My Norfolk Type.........taken some 20 years ago..........picture is from a scan.........so sorry it has turned out small
  21. That name rings a bell RG.........where do i know it from?........didn't he used to write articles in one of the mags. Rolfe.
  22. God this thread stirs up some old memories from my younger days. As a youth my dream was to own a true "Norfolk Lurcher" and the name Mick Douglas still causes my heart to beat a lttle faster.... the times i nearly got to Yarmouth to meet the man and his dogs..........but something always came up and i never ever got there. There is something about the Norfolk "Type" of lurcher that just shouts legend to me. I was brought up on a diet of old poaching books, pictures, traps, and old warreners.... and the so called romantic side of poaching exploits........which we all know is not the case at al

    Jasper65

Actually to tell the truth I lent Jasper a few grand to have a face-lift and to create a new identity.........but i have got no chance of getting my money back................ as I now have no f***ing idea what he looks like. Rolfe.
  24. Yes i agree with LL on this one.............if you want a purely ferreting dog then a good working whippet is ideal. If you want something for net work as well then Beddie/Whippet is my prefered choice. I have worked both for many years and the pure working whippet is hard to beat.........and a lot tougher than they may first appear. Rolfe.
