  1. I've never been into it and never will but the guy who got me into lurchers was into it in a big way in the '80s and '90s. He said its always been the same which is why i've always avoided it. I like my dogs, they only have to please me and sometimes they do and sometimes they dont, and i like to go out with mates but as soon as ego and testoserone get involved i loose interest. Judging by the crap posted recently i made a good call IMO
  2. Brains does work, milegago is the expert i believe. I've done both fox and deer skins using the bicarb and diesel method, gives a lovely white finish but not supple enough to use in clothing. It might be possible to work it to make it supple but as mine are rugs i didnt bother.
  3. Have a think mate, its not because the dogs wont come back
  4. Its for location while working, im not so bothered about the anti theft features. I like the idea as its less obtrusive than the garmin, can stay on permanently and be tracked by phone rather than carrying a dedicated tracking unit all the time. BUT ... all the guys in the states or oz are using the garmin and i've never heard of this system before. I dont really want to be the guinea pig.
  5. Has anyone had experience of the above? http://www.retrievatracking.com/default.aspx I am looking at it as an alternative to the garmin astro, cheaper and a bit more subtle but does it work?
  6. I disagree, if this was the injury posted previously it is a b*****d of a place, not talking about a grazed or sliced stopper pad but the skin below it which is under extreme tension and prone to rupture through the scar. Getting it stitched is a good idea, somethings need a vet and some dont, I do most stuff myself but dont hesitate to go to the vet when its warranted.
  7. The only one who can truly answer this question is you, only you were there and in possesion of all the facts. We can only guess from the info given.
  8. There are some rude twats on here, you dont have to like it but hes offering them for free by the sound of it so cut the guy some slack.
  9. There are a few, im nearer the coast but know a couple of lads up your way. Get a few posts up of what you get up
  10. Try one, you'll never bump that hill billy around again!
  11. I dont spend the money on them but i can see why people would. Its like the difference between a mora and a hand made custom knife, they both do the same thing but one is much nicer
  12. Get permission, its easier in the long run and not too hard once you get the hang of it. Dress sensibley and have a drive round knocking, be polite and respectful and you should find something. Its much easier to get ferreting permission than lamping permission. Good luck
  13. Used to use them before lithiums. They last all night but soon start to feel heavy!
  14. Been out every night this week and will be as long as the wind stays. Had such a crap season so far there is no way im wasting this wind. Its been quite productive so far even with the moon
  15. It all depends what you do, i have four, retired lurcher, two workers and a terrier. If i only lamped two might be too many but i enjoy meeting up with a few lads and getting out with a kind of bobbery pack
  16. Do i recognise that knife? Anything to do with dogger?
  17. A great read, love to hear the stories of that era. I have a friend who did alot around the same time, i've spent many a night listening to his tales.
  18. You could make him a small insulated sleeping box inside the shed so he can keep himself warm, running a heat lamp on a thermostat in an uninsulated shed wont be too efficient
  19. Only seen one chesapeake work and he was good, he was a nasty fighty b*****d with other males though. Not a cross i'd choose over a lab certainly.
  20. It is particularly unpleasant out at the moment, it was bad enough out with the dogs nevermind sat in a high seat!
  21. There dont seem to be any wellies that last, had several pairs of muck boots and wore through the heel on the inside, hunters split and chameau cost a fortune. Got Seelands now but they started leaking. To be fair to Seeland their customer service is great, i emailed them and explained the problem and they are sending me a new pair FOC. Hopefully they last a bit longer if not its back to chameaus.
  22. Are they stock broken, trained, retrieve, recall etc? Need to get the basics sorted before you even think about lamping. i'd start them in the Autumn and spend the summer training and letting them grow up.
  23. I've got plenty in the workshop, i'll give you a piece when your over next week
  24. Rachet strap from the pound shop, cut it to length and tie a loop for your hand, Yes, you are being daft lol!
