Nice work Dave, you did well considering the moon, it’s been like day light the last couple of nights, I’m hoping for a bit of cloud cover tonight, rabbit bashing has been put on hold to chase the gingers ?

The moon last night was like day light, I went for a walk around the shoot and seen very little, one ginger as I was crossing a field, in the flash of an eye in the NV spotter it was gone, it was nice to see a good few hoppers about and I think I might have a go at them tomorrow at dusk, although the trigger was not pulled it was lovely to be out on a night like that ? -
I’m still here, just work has been mental this week, even had to put a full shift in today, sad times ?

Preparation

My plans will be to start pen repairs a lot earlier than last year to get it done before I get eaten by ?, I’ve already started by gathering up feeders, electric fence units and started to cut a few rides through some small forestry blocks, also planning a couple of new drives for next season -
We have a few places up here that still have rabbits in ok numbers, if you go out and get 15 or so you are doing good, it’s nothing like it used to be when 50 was an average night out with the dogs and we were getting £1.50 each for them with the jackets still on, it’s sad that I can only get rid of a couple at a time now and that I have to give all the game away, even venison I don’t mind if people want it but not so many years ago you could almost double your wages with a couple of nights out

Tikka, the Sako is just a refined tikka, but I can’t tell the difference when firing them and with the money you save it would go towards a very nice scope ?

The plan for tonight was to go back up the shoot to try and catch up with the foxes that played me for a fool on Friday night, but as it turned out that it would be a solo trip I decided just to have a little walk around the sheep farm. I decided to take the.17hmr with me, on arrival it was very windy and snowing, after 5 minutes or so the snow cleared leaving a very bright moon, I set off to the top fields in search of rabbits as the farmer had said he’s been noticing a fair few about, as I got myself to the top gate that separates the sheep from the wheat there it was, a fox on the muck heap

Sometimes it’s just good to get out and break the cabin fever ??
-
I wouldn’t mind if it was just one that got the better of me, but all 4 of them mugged me off ?
-
With a bit of luck, I’ll keep at them the proper way for now and if one or two outsmart me I’ll bait up, it’s been a long time since we have had them in these numbers on the shoot, they must of had a good breading season last year, they are not much of a problem at the minute but as spring approaches we definitely want to be on top of the numbers

Cracking write up with a cracking result, with a bit of luck after the weekend we’ll get a break in the weather

I do enjoy a days shooting on my syndicate but most of the time I’m happy to let others shoot while I run the beaters, vermin shooting is more my thing and I’ll always have a rifle or a shotgun with me whenever I’m up at the shoot, it’s always nice to have a walk around and get to know your land, we have people in our syndicate that have been in it a lot longer than me but don’t know the land anywhere near as well as I do
-
Cracking, do you do the munties with the shotguns, we don’t have them up here, I’m hoping for an invite for a go at them down south this year with the rifles
-
That’s quality, give me that over the game shooting any day ??????
-
Durham is far enough for me, once I get north of the Tyne unless they come with subtitles I’m knackered, which is odd because once you are 10 miles past Newcastle it’s like been back in England and I can understand everything they are saying to me ( even if it is just calling me a smoggy tw*t )

Don’t you just have two seasons up there, 3 months of autumn and 9 months of winter ?
-
It’s been a nightmare, I can’t remember the last time I had a week where I wasn’t wet for at least two days of the week, we definitely deserve a good spring and summer after this lot

Longshanx has a spot where he’s not allowed to shoot the foxes, I think it was the first time he took me there and there was about half a dozen running around in one field, one no more the 10’ in front of us, they don’t seem bothered by people but I bet they are off like a shot at the sight of a horse or a dog
-
It must be desperate to let every other fox in the area know that’s its spot because there was a good 15 mole hills and every one had a little ? on it

Well I’ve had a little break from my duties at the shoot, so today decided to do a few small jobs, firstly filling a couple of feeders with the leftover wheat for the pheasants that are still about and the large amount of songbirds, it was good to see a fair few more hens about than the cocks. After gathering up the feeders and electric fence units I decided to make a list of repairs needed to the pens, it turns out that with all this wind we have had there’s a fair amount of damage to all 3 of the pens, these repairs will be carried out at the end of spring once the weather improves, so with

It was calm last night, when I left I came back through Helmsley and it was blowing a gale, which is mad because it’s 5 minutes from the shoot, I was there today and it was wild, started snowing when left about half 5

Last nights foxing adventure was a trip to the pheasant shoot, now last time I was there we didn’t see a thing but as the weather was looking favourable with no moon and warm for this time of year I decided to give it another go, on arrival we headed to a part of the shooting know as the piggeries as this spot is well known for fox traffic, after 15 minutes or so Hugo’s dad spotted one a long way off through the thermal and with the hare call on full volume it wasn’t long before we peaked its interest and it started heading down the hedge back, at approximately 200 yards it decided to make a m

I’d go for it, you’ll get nowt sat in the house ?
