    I’ve done it myself more times than I care to recall and it’s always the easy ones, I’m sure he’ll come good again, he just won’t be getting the practice in on the sheep farm where it matters during lambing

    I think this customer will now be a bait and wait, if he wasn’t confident in the shot I wish he would of said and past me the rifle but he’s not the type of person to do that, he’ll take the shot and blame something or other for the miss, don’t get me wrong he knows what he’s doing and I’ve been with him when he’s dropped 300+ yard foxes, lately he seems to have gone right off the boil, he has always been better at shooting baited foxes, I think it’s because he knows where they are and there’s no pressure to get a shot off, I told him that I have to get up the sheep farm in the coming days ( b

    I said the same thing to my mate when we got there, I thought there’s no chance, it was like day light, I didn’t need the ir on the nv spotter, it was just a matter of hiding in the tree line and putting the caller a long way from us, when they have loving on their mind it takes a little bit to distract them ?

    Because he spends to much time rattling them about and if by the off chance the fox is still there he still bloody misses it ?

    This lads been shooting rifles for over 20 years, I don’t know why he always fluffs a shot at a fox, it’s as if he gets over excited, he said to me he was shaking, trying to get steady on the fox, that worries me a bit

    You are right there, I know loads of farmers, from arable, sheep, beef and none of them have FAC, they all have SGC and game shoot but would never shoot for crop protection, they always ring me, not that I’m complaining mind ?

    Out at the shoot tonight on fox patrol, mainly because little Hugo’s dad wanted to show off his new pulsar thermal spotter, so on arrival we had a play with it and I have to say they are very impressive, I could see far more than I could see through my nv spotter although a lot of what I could see with the thermal I could not I.d. until we got closer to it and by then I could see it better with the nv but it’s definitely a good bit of kit to pick things out long before it comes into view with the nv, after 15 minutes or so we headed out, arriving at our boundary with next doors shoot I set the

    I’ve just always felt it to be a bit of an odd round, not been deer legal in England I’d would always choose.243 over it, if I was wanting a dedicated fox calibre I’d probably go .22-250 because for me that covers all bases, very flat, very fast and for night shooting at distance just point and pull the trigger, I know a fair few people who shoot .223 to great effect ( robin foxer for one ) so it’s clearly more than up to the job, one thing it definitely has going for it is it’s cheap to feed

    It’s was wild up at the shoot today, the wind was enough to take your breath away, we shoot every other Saturday so they have plenty of time to come back in, I hope you enjoy and make the most of your invites, a little bit of a reward for for all the hard work that you put in the rest of the year, I’ll have a few week off at the end of the season to concentrate on the foxes and then make a start on the repairs and ride cutting and all the other stuff that the shoot members have no idea goes on to give them some fantastic, very affordable game shooting

    Back at the shoot this morning for some hand feeding, as we approach the end of the season we have made a dent in them and there’s probably 3 main drives that will still produce good numbers, I was over one of the main drives known as the piggeries, it has a field of oilseed rape running along the side and I counted 43 in the field and could hear a lot more running around as I took the quad down the rides, so fingers crossed this coming Saturday will be another good day, with it been the last but one I would be expecting upwards of a 50 bird day, the last day is the 1st of February and that da

    I would always take sausagedog’s advice over mine, he is vastly more experienced than me ( older ?), what I will say is if I was shooting expanding I would always take a body shot if I could, with small fast calibres especially the hmr shooting ballistic I always try to take a head shot, as always shot placement is key, I wouldn’t take a head shot face on with the hmr, on the centre fire topic, I fully agree with sausage that there’s no overkill with fox, I’d use 50 cal if they would let me, I have mates that use .308 and 30-06 both these can be expensive to feed if you don’t home load,

    Nobody wants to hurt anything, the more you know the more you will make the correct decision, you must have complete respect for what you shoot, foxes are an amazing animal, unbelievably intelligent this is show by how many there is and how they constantly out smart me ?

    I’ve shot a fair few foxes with the .17 and my advice would be keep it under 100 yards and head shoot them with ballistic tip, ( I’ve never had one run when head shot ) if they are square on I would take a bib shot, I’ve shot them side on but there’s a big margin for error and with it been such a small round there’s always a chance it will be running dead, this is only my opinion and as the wife tells me my opinion means nothing ?

    The place is unbelievable and lifting with rabbits, my mates a member so we will find out what sort of mate he is when it comes to getting me some rabbit shooting

    Not my shoot but I was asked to go beating on a posh boys syndicate in Richmond North Yorkshire today, this is the first time I’ve been here although I know a few of the members, as I’ve said before I’m not a massive fan of expensive game shooting but this place is something else, it’s basically one hillside split into 5 big drives and everything is driven towards the river, there’s one drive that’s callEd Boy George’s ( I don’t know why ) and it’s basically a cliff face, there’s a rope to get down to a ledge and you push it across driving the birds out towards the river valley at a hight whe

    We where talking about this where I was beating today, it’s what I would call a mid level shoot, it’s still a syndicate but out of the reach of the average working man, the owner of the shoot sees the way forward as simulated game, low cost, no season and very much focusing on the hospitality side, as it’s his land he could do what he wants but to me it would be terrible to not carry on doing what has been done for hundreds of years on this land, sadly people who are not involved or don’t get the opportunity to see what goes on just tend to see how we are portrayed in the media

    Thanks mate, hope the shoots not running you to ragged, what a perfect and lovely way to remember a good friend and knowing he’s always with you when you are out on the drive, an opportunity given to someone can change a life, I like you was given an opportunity and I grabbed it, the things I have seen and done from that one opportunity have been amazing and completely changed my life and now I’m in a position to give others the chance to do some of the things that I do and with a bit of luck they will enjoy and respect it in the same way we do ?
